Michigan up 2-0 in the 4th. This is the Conference Championships, we lost to Northwestern yesterday after taking a lead into the 9th innning. Game on BTN.

Grounder to 2nd ends the 12th.  IU will have to run their pitchers back to the bullpen now.  It was a good inspirational move but the jog of shame back to the pen must sting a little now.

On the replay, the left handed batter hit it down the 3rd baseline.  The 3rd baseman was playing WAY off the line - not something you normally see late in games.  I'm sure it was based on metrics, but the ball went right through the normal position.

Michigan's next appearance will presumably be on the NCAA selection show at noon on Memorial Day.  Hopefully they didn't just play their way down to a 3 seed.

Either way, I'm seeing a trip to Lexington, Louisville or worse, like Corvallis, in their near future.

Unrelated to today, really, but Michigan is likely to have two players selected relatively highly in the MLB draft in Jaskie and Lugbauer (though Jaskie is going to go a good bit before Lugbauer). Could see guys like Lamb, Slater, Hendrickson and Brdar go at some point on Day 3 of the draft as well.

This year's team has a lot of seniors, plus a lot of juniors who could opt to sign a professional contract.  Hopefully Bakich has them focused on the regional--I would hate to see this team go 2 & out like they did this week.  We need better from the bullpen.

That actually surprises that Brdar won't go higher than Lugbauer.  Brdar's already a major league quality defensive shortstop.  Obviously the glove won't get him to the majors by itself, but he does hit for average (.317, last I saw).  Only thing holding him back in my view is a lack of power.

While Michigan baseball is 42-15 after being swept out of the Big Ten Tournament as the number 2 seed, keep in mind that Michigan didn’t play Nebraska (Big Ten champions), Minnesota (3rd place in Big Ten) or Iowa (tied for 4th in Big Ten.)  Their record against the other top teams in the Big Ten was 2-6, losing two of three to Maryland (tied for 4th in Big Ten), three of four to Indiana (6th in Big Ten), including two at home, and losing to Northwestern in the opening game of the Big Ten Tournament. They were 9-3 against the bottom four teams in the Big Ten – Illinois (23-28 overall), Ohio State (22-34 overall), Rutgers (19-34 overall) and Penn State (18-37 overall), with their only sweep of those teams coming against Rutgers.

Although a 9-3 record against non-conference teams with winning records is impressive, of the eighteen teams Michigan played outside the Big Ten in building a 26-6 non-conference record, only seven of them have winning records this season – Seton Hall (29-22), St, Louis (33-21), Loyola Marymount (37-16), UCLA (28-24), San Diego (35-18-1), Central Michigan (30-26) and Oklahoma (34-21).

The sweep of three games against Oklahoma at the Wilpon Complex in mid-April might seem like it represents Michigan’s strongest showing, especially because it came against a team that’s still ranked in the Top 25, but those wins came in the middle of a 1-9 streak for the Sooners. Since April 7, Oklahoma’s record is 8-15 and they lost to Texas in the opening game of the Big 12 Tournament.

Combine Michigan's 2-6 record against the top teams in the Big Ten with its 9-3 record against non-conference teams with winning records, and that 11-9 record in those games might not look all that impressive.

Those are just my thoughts. Maybe it comes from too many years of preparing to cross-examine witnesses. After a while, I've learned that sometimes things just aren't what they seem.

I don't mean to disparage the success that the Michigan baseball team has enjoyed this season.  For too many years, they've suffered in comparison to the success of the Michigan softball team, so it was nice to see them ranked among the top 25 teams in the nation at many times this year. I just never felt like they were as good a team as the 2007 team that upset top-ranked Vanderbilt in the 2007 NCAA Tournament.  So, after the loss to Indiana today, I decided to look behind the record and found that information.

FULL DISCLOSURE: One of my children was a classmate and friendly with some of the players on the Michigan team that upset Vanderbilt and David Price during the 2007 NCAA Baseball Tournament.
