Michigan Red Zone Offense Analysis Video

Submitted by FanNamedOzzy on

A good number of people have analyzed the red zone offense. I took a shot at it myself, but didn't want to use just text. So I made a video going through each play with my thoughts on each. Enjoy!

I'm noticing that we don't have a lot of routes in the middle of the field. We need more slants and crossing routes, all those throws make the sideline an extra defender. I'm guessing Pep is worried about high passes getting picked.

I like this way better than the UFR format, which I know is blasphemy around here.  Well done sir. This deserves a bump. (Do they even "bump" MGoBoard posts anymore?  If not this post should be cause to bring it back)

I'm pretty sure that play #2 is actually well designed to defeat AF's defense. It looks like an RPO where WS should have pulled and thrown to Perry. The CBs were playing off and McDoom is setting up for an edge sealing block. I would attribute the failure of this play to a BR from Speight.

I think we've been incorporating more option plays for Speight this year as we see more teams load the box against us (his zone read keeper against Cinci, for example). Considering this is all new, not surprising that he's struggling to diagnose at times, but getting a couple of these executed per game could really make a difference in how effective the offense feels.

The comment in the video says that it would've been nice if Speight would've looked the Perry instead of Crawford.  The spin move made that difficult to do.  Once Speight spun, as opposed to laterally moving to his left, he took his eye off the play and likely locked onto the first guy he saw once he was again looking towards the end zone.

But man, this was enjoyable to watch.  I usually prefer text over trying to watch/read a video, but this was pretty awesome.

Great video, thanks! Speight's biggest problem with the endzone fade is his timing. He waits too long to throw the ball so he throws them long based on where the receiver is when he's releasing the ball.

Wow...this is fantastic. Looks like we have a few consistent problems:

1. We got RPS'ed to death

2. The plays seem too complicated with OL moving all around instead of just running over a physically overmatched opponent. Hopefully these reps pay dividends when we NEED to use that complicated scheme to get the win.

3. Speight missed a lot of pre snap reads and open receivers - often throwing into coverage or airmailing a pass that an open TE would have gotten.

4. Speight seems allergic to dumping the ball to an open outlet, or just a shorter route, preferring instead to go for the home run pass almost everytime. A checkdown is NOT a bad thing....wish he felt the same way.

5. Would love to see Speight develop a pump fake.

6. If he places the pass to Black on the inside he at least gives him a chance to get a PI call...but out of bounds means no play on the ball and no chance to get a cheap PI call either.

Excellent work...l honestly feel much more informed about what happened last game and THINK I feel a bit better, but not 100% sure.  Either way, great work and thank you!

Nice video

Honestly, that very first ball to Perry is catchable. It deserved more effort. It wasn't a perfect throw, obviously, but Perry has made more difficult catches in his career than that would have been. He basically gets a hand on it. I'm not sure if he thought he was already at the sideline or what, but I think that incompletion is as much on Perry as it is on Speight.

What I learned is teams should blitz us constantly because we are unable to punish them for it. Did we ever have success when they blitzed? Did we ever check out of a play this game when they showed a heavy blitz? Uber optimist will say they had exotic blitzes and disguised them. But even if that were true these are still borderline 2 and 3 star athletes on a defense that replaced 10 starters. What will happen when bigger and faster players blitz on us?

But asking the receiver to dive is an excuse for a terrible throw that a D1 quarterback HAS to make. I don't think a dive would have been enough, the ball was whizzing by just as he turned his head to look back.
My verdict , Speight sucks. Those were three terrible throws that most qbs can make. Maybe the teams best quarterback is actually Harbaugh.

I appreciated the work here, even if some people are critical. My main takeaway is not so optimistic. I see an offense where a bunch of guys are missing things and it makes the chances of this offense clicking in the near term more of a long shot. Now that we have to replace Black and break in a new guy, it might be an additional step back.

Looking back on Purdue's struggles in recent years, a lot of it can be pinned on their defense. They did put up points in most of their games. The fact that they have been playing pretty good D up to this point means we need to be much more creative in this game as I think the D will give up at least 20 points to Purdue. Trying to run the ball up the middle into blitzes isn't going to cut it (still don't know why Speight didn't check out of some of those plays?).
