Michigan Monday: Now with 90% less snark!

Submitted by MBAgoblue on November 21st, 2023 at 11:11 AM

Gerdeman posted the final pre-OSU Michigan Monday, and there is an uncharacteristic lack of snark, replaced with perhaps a sense of impeding DOOM?

"It also means that Michigan left bloodied and bruised after last year’s Illinois game and it didn’t much seem to matter in the second half of last year’s game against the Buckeyes."

Gerdemen, while a goofy guy, actually has some interesting takes.  Of course he's an OSU homer but he seems less extreme and less vitriolic than so many others.  Thanks for posting.

It's the clicks/engagement-rate.

Nobody's clicking on this same event if it were Ole Miss or FSU, etc. so ESPN/etc. won't cover it like the daytime soap-opera coverage they did for this.

Just like when we beat OSU in 2021, it sparked Super-Bowl-level coverage of Michigan (the picturesque snow/Big House also helped the cinematics along) for far longer than deserved, it's because we drive clicks--and Michigan is a public-ivy thus has alum in power, higher-status, class, and income.

Retired NBA players on some youtube-video/podcast-thing (you'd never see this in mainstream media, it disempowers the theatre) were just talking about this a month or so ago, the execs, the owners, advertisers, etc. they want big-market teams in the Championship, the quote was something like, the refs were going to make it so "in order to beat them by 2 (points) on the scoreboard, we really have to beat them by 17 (points) in the game"

Sorry. Why, again, does a weekly post on a site devoted to another team (that team, no less) merit a separate board post here?

It never did make much sense. It makes almost no sense now.

There's vague reference to McCarthy injury in that article.

Anyone seen anything credible on our LT, QB, and MLB injury situation wrt injuries lately?

For Barrett, at least, I thought I heard that it was a sprained AC joint (shoulder). It'll probably be painful (think I heard six weeks to fully heal), but he'll play. It does suck though that the injury came when Barrett had to clean up a missed tackle by Wallace (?); if the first tackle was made, Barrett doesn't get hurt...

Why would this game say anything about the last two years? Stalions wasn’t employed by Michigan in ‘21. OSU appears to have had Michigan’s signs and 100% changed their own signs before ‘22. I’m not buying this bullshit narrative. Michigan won both games by 3+ touchdowns, largely on the strength of second half-performances that outed OSU as soft.

Excuse me, what I meant was Ryan Day is a great coach

Their losses to Michigan impacted their psyche.  They don't see themselves as invincible if those losses were real and it completely kills their identity.  They can't be real or they are not who they thought they were and they don't know who else to be.  I have no idea if they players think that way but the fans certainly do.

It's all part of controlling the narrative and winning the PR war, just like it's been since this started. It pains me to say that OSU has done a thousand percent better at this -- granted with the support of the other conference teams, our chickenshit commish, and most of the national sports media -- than we have.

We have won in the trenches consistently, but we're losing this battle, and it's not close.

OSU fans have themselves convinced of this because it is unfiltered copium for a fanbase that has been in crisis the last 2 years

For everyone else, they're hoping onto Ryan Day's fantasy because they think it's funny to pile on Michigan and/or Harbaugh. I'm still hopeful it'll flip when it comes out that fake tough guy Ryan knew about the PI for a long long time. Loser of this game is gonna have a hellacious offseason

As much as I want to HATE these guys, I generally just don't.  I hate that they are buckeye fans, but their reporting is relatively unbiased and they just seem like decent dudes.  I can respect them as being the rival team's beat writers, doing a pretty thorough job, and doing their best to report the news, as they see it, as unbiased as possible.

We are about to learn a lot about this Michigan football team. And a lot about the last two Michigan football teams as well.

The weak-ass Ohio State excuse machine trying to spin the narrative that the last two years were about signs.  Signs that they had too.

But they honestly believe this shit.  They are delusional.

College Game Day sign:

WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE GONNA BE WHEN YOU LOSE THIS GAME?

As infuriating as it is, maybe it's helpful. In 2021, we went out and stunned what might have been the better team. We were the tougher team, for sure, and had the advantage of playing at home in the best atmosphere we've had in a long while, but it's not a stretch to think that the more talented team lost (OSU was certainly the more complete team, by most metrics). So they roll into the 2022 Game overconfident, sure that 2021 was a fluke. And what happens? We beat them even worse, in their own stadium.

So if they want to latch onto this narrative that the past two years were both flukes, and come in overconfident (again) instead of with a blue-collar mentality like we've had, by all means, please do. Just makes it more likely that they'll fold when adversity hits...

I miss the "this team is as scary as"-ometer. Wonder what happened to that?

His game analysis is more rational than the wishfest of his and his partner Tom's (not that there is anything wrong with that) sign interpreting coverage.

Snark factor is down and he actually is a good writer in my opinion.

I do listen to their Michigan Monday podcast and they were very impressed with the depth and quality of Michigan's defensive line, noting that Kenneth Grant was not offered by OSU and wondering if the Buckeyes wished they had offered him.
