Michigan Monday is up

The intro:

The No. 7 Michigan Wolverines played with their food a little bit on Saturday, but easily defeated the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders 40-21.

Not a lot of substance since this is a week 1 win.

A small excerpt regarding tempo:

The tempo may not have seemed all that much faster to some people, but I can promise you that it was. For example, I generally watch the games on YouTube and I use the ‘L’ key to fast-forward 10 seconds after every play. In previous years, I would just hit the ‘L’ key three times quickly to move ahead 30 seconds. By that point, a quarterback would just about be ready to call for the ball. Now, I can still get two ‘L’ mashes in, but if I go a third, I’ll usually have to back up a bit. So there you go — scientific proof that this offense is legitimately faster than in previous years.

Always worth a read...

Good read and he makes good points. I think Patterson is good but flawed and the coaches know it. Unfortunately we haven't seen enough passing from McCaffrey to make a switch full time.We have to roll with Shea and hope he clicks in the offense when it all comes together.

So impressive and fair...especially when the source is considered.

Second time I've read one of those in its entirety.

That's due mainly to the level and amount of concerns it brings when compared to listening from the vantage point of Inside The Huddle.

Well-oiled machine they have down there.

I always enjoy this column. It’s hard to believe this is coming from a buckeye fan given the lack of the word that rhymes with bum. Either way I always look for the post.

Do we have anything like it?

If not we really should, you can't help but pick up things week in and week out on our most important opponent.

Yep.

The whole "Michigan and it's fans don't pay attention to the tOSU rivalry" thing the same as tOSU is pretty ridiculous. The board obsesses about tOSU and if you tire of that you can visit TTB where others obsess about them on their board or the Edge of the Internet where the same thing is going on etc. etc.

But you know, our impact as internet posters really matters. We impact outcomes. If *we* only had a countdown clock on here to remind us about the tOSU game...keep our focus sharp.

There are multiple OSU blogs that do a Michigan watch, but the best this blog can do is "Opponent Watch."  It's hard not to think that our lack of success against Ohio isn't a culture problem when our blogs treat them the same as Rutgers.

Was a "culture problem" the reason that Wilton Speight threw a terrible pick against OSU in 2016? Or cause the refs to call a dumb biased game against us? Or did a "culture problem" cause John O'Korn to miss a wide open receiver in the 2017 game? OSU has had success over the last 20 years that only Alabama can claim to surpass. Michigan had it's worse 7 year stretch in 50 years. That's why we struggle to beat OSU, not because of some nebulous "culture problem" that didn't seem to exist when Michigan was regularly stocking NFL talent on it's roster.

I've been told countless times that the players read this blog.  If true, the blog's content almost certainly affects their motivation to prepare for a particular opponent.  If the fans don't care about Ohio State, why should the players?

wait what, of course we care about it, and if you suiting up in the winged helmet you likely care a lot without a blog telling you the fans care, or perhaps all the people in the athletic department will convince them or in team meetings, or in their position groups, but seriously if a kid need a blog to get fired up to keep a class from getting golden pants then we lost the minute we signed him

How the traditional Michigan fan, or OSU fan, perceives the rivalry in no way has any impact whatsoever on the result of The Game. You can't tell me that every man on this roster doesn't want to go out and give everything he has to beat OSU. You can't tell me this game isn't personal to Harbaugh, even if he doesn't publicly display it. He frickin' played in the game, for the coach who probably emphasized and prioritized the rivalry the most out of any coach in the history of Michigan football. There are countless people on this board who, whether they admit it or not, would happily take going 8-4 if it meant one of those 8 wins was a win over OSU. I'm one of them.

We don't lose The Game because OSU fans put up a bunch of red tape blocking off M's around Columbus and we don't do the same with blue tape over the O's in Ann Arbor. We don't lose because of a culture problem. We lose because either a) OSU is just the flat-out better team that day (2015 and 2018), or b) we shoot ourselves in the foot and give the game away through stupid mistakes, bad penalties, or put ourselves in a position where a questionable to bad call affects the outcome (2016 and 2017).

I will never accuse this program of losing The Game because the players and coaches didn't want it bad enough. If you don't want to win bad enough to get over 20 years of heartbreaking, soul-crushing losses that have defined your program over that course of time, then you don't deserve to wear the winged helmet.

Glad someone else thought that about Glasgow. Not a good thing if he is the best at his position.

Not like the team hasn’t had some success recruiting linebackers lately. He can tackle the quarterback if no one blocks him. But I can’t see this team competing for a conference championship or more with a player of that caliber starting in the middle of its defense.

He’s a Glasgow... the commentary isn’t about him being fast.  No one above said anything about him being fast.  But being at the game last Saturday he “looked” fast, way faster than Gil and he found and stayed in his lanes well.  Is he a 5 star... fuck no.  Is he way better than a 3 star... fuck yea.

I said it above, I'm glad he has supplanted Gil. To me he is still a tad slow for WLB but I'll take that over Gil. I hated Glasgow at Viper, way too slow for that spot.

The only thing stars measure well is innate athleticism, which McGrone and Anthony both have. But every time they are on the field I see why they are behind Glasgow and Gil. Maybe if they were on the field more against the likes of MTSU they would improve? I don't know, I'm not their coach.

Shea had a couple issues with ball security but for the most part has been very good at not losing any games for us. I think by years end he will end up being one of the best we’ve had in a long long time. Pisses me off that this fan base wants to string a guy up at the first sign of adversity. As far as players reading this thread, I hope they don’t put any stock into a bunch of armchair qb, beer bellied Al Bundys.

I didn't interpret it that way. I read it as him being very good most of the time, but having those moments where he just does something that makes you scratch your head. Favre was basically a go big or go home type. He forced a lot of stuff because he was extremely confident that he was the best player on the field at all times. I don't get that from Shea.

I do wonder about his ribs, though.

CompleteLunacy

I think Shea's problem is all mental. He gets into funks and can't seem to snap out of it. I don't think his bruised ribs had a significant effect on his throwing ability physically - but the injury must have been lingering in his mind, and it affected his decision making in the 3rd quarter. That concerns me because we can't afford long lulls against better opponents...but if the coaches can find a way to reign that in (or be willing to temporarily switch to Dylan when they sense Shea getting in a funk), then the team will be better off.

"I’m not sure what to make of the way Dylan Martellfrey was used — sorry, McCaffrey. He threw it twice, but was used mostly as a runner, picking up 42 yards on eight attempts. He also caught a screen pass for some reason for one yard.

If Patterson wasn’t a senior, I’d say this was Transfer Portal Playcalling. My only other guess is that McCaffrey simply deserves to play. Nothing I saw on Saturday disputes that, I just wouldn’t have him carrying it as much as Anthony Thomas 2.0."

Am I the only one who didn't know you can advance YouTube videos 10 seconds by pressing "L"?  And it looks like "J" rewinds 10 seconds and "K" is pause/start.  This is life-changing.
