Mattison is not a very good coach his time has passed. The only people left who think his techniques and schemes aren't outdated are Michigan fans on message boards who like to watch defenses rack up stats against bad teams and than get their asses handed to them whenever we play anybody with a pulse. He is a great recruiter and he's in tight with the right people to keep his job but lets not call him some great position coach at this point in his career. I am scared to see what Florida is going to do to us in the bowl game with his bend but don't break schemes. Pruitt would be a homerun hire and honeslty if it meant firing Mattison to get him we should do it and not even think twice about it.

Watch our Dline against anybody who had a good offensive line. They didn't do anything against Ohio State,Indiana and to be honest Minnesota handled them pretty well. Let me guess though cause we dominated against people with bad O lines like Penn State,Rutgers,UNLV and Oregon State they're all world right? Henry,Hurst,Wormley and Charlton got ran all over at the end of the season cause they couldn't out athlete the guys blocking them. Watch their techniques they stand up almost every play instead of getting pushes by staying low and taking up space. Not to mention they give up the corner to easily. Our lineback play is attrocious no doubt but it didn't help that our D Line over and over again didn't take up any space and made themselves small by not using proper techniques.

Mattison is not a very good coach? Wow this is news to me....seems he has been extremely productive at every stop along his career. What he did with our defense from the time he got here is nothing short of a miracle. I'm happy to have him on staff...whatever position that may be

I know this cause I am very tight with a lot of former playres, know some of the parents and coaches who's kids are being recruited to Michigan and from my 40yrs of watching football. Our Dline just like anything Mattison coaches looks good against the bad teams and folds against the good ones. I would hate for you to all go back and look at Mattisons defenses against teams with winning records versus teams with losing ones. I feel it pry would ruin a lot of your Christmas's. But just like anything with our fan base you can't talk realistic with them cause they don't want to hear the truth. I am sure former players,High School coaches and parents of the kids don't know anything and the guys sitting in their moms basements on MGOBLOG telling us everything that is Michigan is right are correct. I wish some of the people on these blogs could spend one day around some of the former players unfiltered just so they got a real idea of what is going on. Delusional fans are the ones who have the hardest time ever seeing how delusional they are when it comes to Michigan.

Not a good coach?  Let's see where Michigan's defense ranked in 2010 compared to 2011.

  2010 2011
Defensive S&P+ 81st 23rd
Defensive FEI 109th 16th
Total Defense 116th 18th
Passing Defense 112th 16th
Rushing Defense 95th 39th

And while we did have some turnover magic in 2011 that alone doesn't explain the defensive turnaround.

And our DLine was arguably the strength of our very good defense this year until we sustained some injuries, which hurt

You're missing the point. We currently have two defensive backs coaches (Zordich, Jackson) and a defensive line coach (Mattison). Pruitt is a DB guy, which would give us 3 defensive backs coaches and a DL coach. Move Mattison to LB coach, and now you've got 3 DB coaches, a LB coach, and no DL coach. The problem is the same, just shifted around.

Let me put it this way, since you didn't get the gist the first time:

If Pruitt is hired, then one of the defensive backs coaches has to go away.

It is very possible to have someone coach both the DL and Linebackers, keep the secondary coaches the way they are and not have Pruitt be a position coach. Not every DC has a position they coach and not every team has a coach for both the DL and Linebackers. This wouldn't be abnormal.
