Michigan a** kicking Indiana snowflakes

I don't think anyone expected this result. This is a great win for our guys, good luck heading into East Lansing. Insert Tom Cream memes below.

Which is why don't take the bait. As I said last week...it's about consistency at this point. We're always going to have 4-5 games where we can't miss. Look at the box score, IU shot REALLY well. We just didn't foul or turn the ball over and they did. The FG% and 3PT% were still way too high, so we better keep forcing TOs to get those extra possesions if we're not making them miss shots. Great win, but I want to see it over the course of a month. Mid-Jan to Mid-Feb. Taking the bait now only makes you more mad when they're struggling to beat shitty teams because you know the potential. Consistency.

Not only that, but we also shot extremely well (11-20 from 3, 31-49). This has all the hallmarks of being one of those games where good shooting makes up for a host of other problems. We'll see, but yeah, my hopes are not up even a half a percent.

I get that you're mocking what seems like an over-simplified analysis, but I suggest it's not easy to explain why the same group of guys could play so well and so poorly.

Playing "hard" or not isn't the same thing as caring about the result or not (just anticipating a common rebuttal). No one doubts the players care about every game, but they may occasionally know how to light their internal fire and occasionally not find that same flame while caring just as much. I don't think there's much wrong with describing it as playing "hard," other than it's a little too simple to be a useful coaching point. But this is commenting, not coaching.

Do you honestly think an internal fire as you say has any affect on whether the ball goes through the hoop when you release it? It doesn't at all not even a little. I understand what you're getting at but I don't think it's applicable to basketball it's too precise.

Not sure you or anyone will see this now, but -

Fire doesn't help a ball go through a hoop; you're right about that. Fire helps you make the cut (rather than being more passive on offense) at full speed (rather than 80-90% effort) that gets an easy layup. Fire helps you stay in the demanding position and balance required to play great on-ball defense. Fire helps you reach for a steal on help D rather than stick only to your man/zone. Fire helps you get a drive-and-kick assist for a teammate's open 3 when the offense is bogged down / confused by the opponent's scheme. There are lots of tangible ways that a player's max effort changes the game tactically.
