Michigan Hoops Open Thread - on the Road vs. PSU

Just bought a new 65” OLED (had to hop on the Super Bowl deals). Hoping the first game I watch on it is a good omen

This offense is brutal. Long 2s everywhere. Then a rushed 3 from Hunter. Ugh

Harrar shoved Houstan down, how is that not a foul?

Man to man defense and not running the offense through Hunter are some early questions for me 

Our offense is: need a bucket down low? Dickinson. Need a mid-range? Dickinson. Need a 3? Dickinson. 

Reminds me of the early Manny Harris years 

This is one of the worst basketball games I have ever seen.

I think Diabate is going to be a good player but he is playing WAY too much and the offense suffers a lot when he is in.

This is kind of a crap fest.

Why did the shot clock only reset to 20 after psu threw it out of bounds?

Both these teams suck.  Two points combined in 4 minutes. 

I hope not taking advantage of this horrendous PSU stretch of bad basketball will not come back on us. We should be up ten.

Jones is not a pure pg by any measure. He has trouble dribbling, can’t look for open people because his head is down and goes around the screen while allowing the defender to as well.  He’s ok when he tries to take it to the basket but he can’t seem to set up his teammates. 

I think the commentators make a good point when they mention that Michigan seems to thrive off of sets. This team has no playmaking juice otherwise when they're not using screen action. Jones is the primary guy who tries, but he's just not quick enough to shake guys consistently. Same goes for Eli off the bounce.

I agree that a team is at their best when they can just attack without rhythm, but it feels like Michigan just lacks the personnel to do that. It bogs everything else down too: Houstan is probably best as a standstill shooter, but if there's no initial breakdown of the defense, he doesn't get opportunities. Hunter often needs to be at the 3 point arc setting up screens instead of position to post up inside. Ideally Collins and Bufkin have some of that skill, but defensively they're not playable right now. If anything, I want more sets from Juwan, it at least gets something flowing.

Announcers keep talking about the PSU offense as If the Kobe blow byes were consistently replicable…

Hunter is just off. 

My wish for Houstan would be to take things to the basket with power not finesse. Attack the basket, be physical, and get fouled. This finger role, fade stuff is so middle school.
