Michigan Football 2023: "Inevitable" (as represented by Calvin & Hobbes)

It may have been Joel Klatt.  It may have been another color commentator.  But somebody recently described this year's football team as possessing a sense of inevitability.

As in, it may take more plays than other high-powered offenses, but it's inevitable that they are going to get into the endzone.  They aren't quick-strike, but it's inevitable that they'll be blowing out their opponent.  They aren't flashy, but it's inevitable that they will be at least heavily in the mix for a championship by the end of the year.

"Inevitable."  If Michigan wins the whole thing, that's what the book of this season should be titled.

Anyway, here's Calvin & Hobbes to better demonstrate the whole idea for you.  Have a great Tuesday!

Love, love, LOVE me some Calvin and Hobbes. Collected all the books when I was younger, and it was truly funny stuff.

Personal favorite is still Attack of the Deranged, Mutant, Killer Monster Snow Goons.

Same. I have most of the softcover editions, but Snow Goons was the first. I eventually got the 3 volume hardcover edition for Christmas. I wondered aloud if someone got me a cinderblock as a gag gift. I was pleasantly surprised when I unwrapped it. My mother always knew me the best.

I used to read Calvin & Hobbes all the time when we had reading time, wayyyyyy back in the day.
Good memories/simpler times

I mean, I personally am trying hard not to count chickens before they hatch, but everyone who knows football CFB pretty well can see that Michigan is on another tier this year....with Georgia.

Lot of season left of course, anything can happen, but if this team plays even remotely to its full potential....oof, I agree with Klatt, good luck. The depth of this team is something I haven't seen in ...umm...a long time.  To see our top guys week after week sitting on the bench resting mid 3rd QTR on, is insane.  Dudes are staying healthy

I also keep pulling myself back to 2020 and prior, remembering how  crappy it felt in a lot of areas.  Not awesome times, mostly, and I hope we all can appreciate where this program is right now.  I know Im preaching to the choir here.

Michigan looks a lot like UGA the past couple years rn.

That said, still haven't played a team with a pulse or talent anywhere near us.

I do believe, however, to beat UM this year, will take very creative game planning, specifically on the offensive side of the ball. The defense is extremely talented and presses both the run and pass game at all levels.  I think to beat UM a team will need to have multiple game plans and adjust maybe quarter by quarter.

Per our offense, in conference, it looks like only PSU has the horses to slow us down, but still need to see it happen against our power run game.  I think OSU gets blown off the ball, again, like 2021.

All that said, anything can happen...turnovers, injuries, etc. And UGA, shall we face them, still has the horses to compete on both sides of the line of scrimmage, even if it's not a 2021 UGA d-line.

UM-UGA would be a pretty even matchup where we'd seemingly have the advantage at QB.

Man I know we are a very, VERY good football team but every time I see one of these threads where we all take turns telling each other how awesome and unbeatable we are I flash back to 1976.  That year Michigan was the consensus #1 team in the nation for 8 straight weeks outscoring our opponents 339 - 58 (average score of 42-7) as we heading to West Lafayette for a game against the 3-5 Boilermakers.   There werent published betting odds back then but if there had been Michigan would've probably been a 30 point plus favorite.

All us old-timers remember what happened next.  A generally crappy day for everyone punctuated by an extremely rare Jim Smith dropped pass (wouldve been a sure TD) and then a missed FG as time ran out (the call of that kick was made famous on the Bob Ufer's greatest hits album) and Michigan went down 16-14.

Or maybe the 1986 team.  That year we were 9-0, ranked third and playing at home against an unranked 5-4 Minnesota team.  60 minutes of football later and we had our first defeat 20-17.  Classic trap game as it fell the week before OSU.  Historical note - in 86 we played a game after OSU and before the Rose Bowl in Hawaii.

So I'm not saying anything we say or do here makes one bit of difference on what happens on Saturday but I will never forget those games which is why I'm always nervous until the game is over and we're on top.  So are we "inevitable"?  Maybe, but just last year I was so sure we would beat TCU and play in the National Championship game I had an Airbnb picked out and airline tickets purchased for LA for the trip I ended up not making.

Beat Indiana.
