Michigan Daily got spanked, changes Juwan firing headline

Submitted by St Joe Blues on March 20th, 2024 at 11:03 AM

The Michigan Daily posted its front page for Juwan Howard's firing online and was taken to the woodshed. It was quite shameful and disrespectful. No matter how his tenure ended here, he's still a legendary Michigan basketball figure.

Thankfully they announced they're changing it for the print edition, although I haven't seen what the new version is.

I agree w/ those who say it’s both accurate and clever…

But it isn’t at all funny just bc this isn’t how you treat family. You do something like this with someone for whom you find glee in their failure. Juwan shouldn’t receive such treatment here.

You only do this to family when you’re a reply-guy clout chaser.

I actually thought the original headline was fairly creative. It isn't commenting on anything other than his performance as coach so I don't see the problem.

I guarantee you Juwan and people and his orbit are more stung by getting fired than the Michigan Daily headline.

Glad they changed it, Juwan is a legend on the court here, left with class, and should be held to a high regard here. It didn’t work out as a coach, but why drag him through the mud. I don’t blame people on forums like this voicing their opinion or displeasure, but a publication like that, or even large social media Michigan sites that reach hundreds of thousands posting pictures of him with a clown nose and cussing him out? Awful, and when future players and coaches see that’s how a fanbase treats a former legend, why would they want a part of that? Hopefully we can learn a lesson where instead of chasing Brady hoke out with pitchforks and ten years later changing our narrative to “he was a good guy who loved Michigan but the job was too big” so that we can feel good about ourselves, maybe we realize this is probably hard for Juwan as a person and alumni and legend who loves Michigan, say thank you as he thanked us, and wish him the best.

This place is so weird sometimes, lol.

For months, most of the posters here have been super critical of Juwan and eviscerated him often for his many failings and the issues within the program. But now you are all up in arms about the grave offense of calling him a failure when he just coached the worst team in most of our lifetimes and has left the program in a spot where it has like 2 players on the roster and will take years to rebound.

Its not that bad (or wrong) of a headline, and the indignation and feigning of offense in here is absurd.

His W-L basketball record at Michigan speaks for itself. He has a great name and is a part of Michigan history forever.  But his coaching outcomes here were below average.

In sports the America media will either pander to, or attempt to tear down winners, while also kicking and ridiculing any losers when they're down.

In other news, water is wet, and we landed on the moon.

Such a BS headline.

Pretty certain Juwan has done more for the university than whomever wrote that garbage....and he's worthy of much greater respect.

I'll say it: I don't get the outrage. The headline was fine. Edgy? Sure. But can you look at this season and not call it a failure? Or the general decline over the past couple years? Call it what it is.

I don't see it all that bad honestly...It was a total failure and dug a huge hole for the program. He's still a legend, and I love the dude at the same time.
