I would be shocked if Fielding Yost or Fritz Crisler ever played a home game that kicked off at 1:00 pm.  I know Michigan started moving their November games from 1:30 to 1:00 in the mid '70s, and eventually had entire season slates kicking off at 1:00 by the late '70s.

Also, given the fact that Michigan didn't go on daylight time until the late '60s, those games that kicked off at 2:00 or 2:30 EST were really kicking off at 3:00 or 3:30 EDT.

Ol' Bob Ufer inviting Michigan fans to "Tune in at noon, 1 pm, whenever, for our next broadcast when Toe meets Leather for next week's kickoff vs _______ State (etc.)!" Games back in the 70s and 80s, throughout most of Bo's days at Michigan, were at 1 pm. OTOH, Athletic department budgets and TV $$$ were much smaller back then. Bo's wishes---and ticket revenue---instead determined kick-off time.

I didn't realize how awesome it was when you were gone until now.

I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them.

They love noon games. So do I. Don't like waiting to watch the game, whether it's at 3:30 or at night. But I understand, and I believe the coaches do too, that it doesn't matter how we feel. The games will be placed according to how networks and conferences believe will maximize viewership (and thus ad revenue, sponsors etc) throughout the day.

See, this is the kind of stuff that gets WD auto-neg status for some.

People will say he gets a raw deal around here every once in a while when WD contributes something good, but people forget when he does crap like this just to poke the bear. We get it WD. You love noon games. Quit attention whoring

Good teams can bring it no matter what time of day it is. Alabama would bring it in someone’s backyard at 9 am if they had to. We need to stop with this excuse. It’s not the 70’s or 80’s. Big time programs play in prime time.

we played our games on Saturday morning and we had to be done before the high school games were played starting at 1 or 2 pm, so we could go to the game and watch them while wearing our team jersey. I remember getting up early and not eating much, maybe tea and toast, butterflies churning

The feeling I got about waking up early to play on those Saturdays is the way I feel about Michigan gamedys now, especially when I lived in Ann Arbor and used to hear the band practicing at Elbel Field.

And for the most part, during my time growing up, the games that we could watch when they were televised, were played at noon. There would be an occasional night game on the schedule, Michigan v. Notre Dame, for example. But the NCAA restricted the number of times teams could be shown on TV and the schools dictated when the games were played.

And at Michigan, the games were always kicked off between noon and 1 pm. Because that's what Bo wanted. And the only times they weren't is when the team played a game in different time zones. But the game times didn't change, just the venue and timeslot based on where they were played.

The Michigan-Ohio State game has only once in my recollection been played outside the noon or 1 pm timeslot in my memory, and that was in 2006 in Columbus because ABC wanted a 3:30 start.

Today, I would agree with the coaches, that every game should start at noon. But, of course, it's not our choice and so another tradition has been scotched by ecnomic choice and financial reality, youthful anticiipation and family interests no longer part of the equation.

I do like noon games better than night games.

Don't have to wait the whole day and after the game is over, I can do what I want.

They all wish their games could be played at the same time (and ideally same place) every week.

Which is fine.  But that's not how D-1 football works anymore.

I’ve been to many Michigan games over the years. For me it doesn’t get any better than the atmosphere that was present for the UTL1 & UTL2 games. The big house was so loud those nights, the games were amazing. Recruits love night games, and there are many more eyes on the program during prime time television. I love all college football games at all times, even the pac 12 late night kickoffs are awesome. I’d be happy just to have one home night game per year.

because it is more in tune with the daily routine that you live the rest of your life. You get up, you 'warm up' and then you get to work. Working at night messes with that and it's usually not associated with a healthy lifestyle.

I think various hockey players have talked about the way the afternoons on game nights are mentally quite trying as the pressure builds up and you need to fill the time. It's free time but it's not free because it's overshadowed by the high pressure event that looms.

They also talk about how it's basically impossible to go to bed before 3 am on game nights as the game ends around 10 pm ish and you then have to go through all the post-game routines and then you typically end up going somewhere to unwind with the boys. It's even worse I imagine for football teams as those games tend to not end before 11 ish and it's gotta be not far from 1 am before they're actually outta there. Being in collegiate athletics they probably are also not exactly encouraged to hit the club after games so who knows how they unwind from these games psychologically. I'm just watching and it messes up my weekends because - win or loss - I am pretty hyped in terms of adrenaline after the games for at least a couple hours. For players and coaches, it's like coming out at the other end of a whirlwind.

When I was at Florida State in the early 90s, FSU usually played night games and playing in the daytime was fairly unusual.  I remember the players saying the big difference was you could see a lot better in the daytime games.  I wonder if that actually has an effect on the game?

Of course they do.
The earlier the game finishes, the earlier they can move on to getting ready for the next game.

With a night game, the whole day is spent dealing with nervous energy. Little to no work gets done.

There is still a lot of film to watch and grade and opponent's film to look at by Sunday afternoon. Playing an away game, at night against Wisconsin and having to catch a flight back before they start preparing for Ohio State? That would be advantageous.

With a noon game, they might even have a chance to have dinner with their families, maybe even catch a look at  part of a game or two on TV.
