Michigan basketball makes its debut in the AP Top 25 at #23
Doesn't look like ESPN has updated its rankings quite yet, but here's the link:

EDIT: Rankings are now up to date

There would be no reason for a committee...teams with the most wins would get in.
January 15th, 2018 at 1:56 PM ^
To ignore the closeness of a game is to discard such information. Yes, a loss is a loss, but Michigan losing to Purdue by 1 and Valpo losing to Purdue by 30 is probably a decent indicator of how Michigan and Valpo (for instance) stack up.

Except scores do matter. What if OSU lost to Iowa on a last second hail mary? You think that gets viewed the same by the committee as getting taken to the wood shed.
January 15th, 2018 at 3:31 PM ^
That's a pretty ridiculous statement. A loss by 40 means one team was clearly much better than the other. A loss by 1 means the two teams were pretty damn close in quality.

How can the vast majority of voters still have MSU in the Top 10? Their most impressive wins are against NC (which isn't a Top 10 team) and ND (which is unranked, though their best player is now hurt). They also lost a close game to Duke, when Bagley (Duke's best player) missed most of the game. Big whoop.
MSU's "resume" is not that impressive. Combine that with a horrid recent stretch of 3 games and there is no way they should be a Top 10 team. But people like Dick Vitale, Jon Rothstein and John Feinstein -- who should know better -- aren't believing what their eyes are seeing.
Maybe by the end of the year, MSU will be a legit Top 10 team. But they sure as heck aren't now.
But let's give it up for Graham Couch -- ranks OSU, #11, UM #12 and MSU #14! While I think that's too high for OSU and UM, it's at least logical. Plus, OSU and UM's wins were not flukes.
AP basketball rankings, during the season, are low in the world of importance, but it's annoying when people half-ass anything.

What would they do with us had we held on against #3 Purdue and not blown a 20 point lead against the Cooler Poopers? Would they be forced to give respect to one of the good guys in college football. I don't understand why the clean good, guys don't get recognized for doing things the right way but the Sabans, Caliparis, even that prick coach K gets blinded love and worship

FWIW Graham Couch has us ranked 12, MSU 14. Source.

Look no further than the post directly above yours. Surprisingly he seems to be giving us more respect than a lot of voters.

Is internal DISRESPEK more effective or less effective than external for them? What is the DISRESPEK to shoulder-chip size exchange rate?

I'm actually glad we don't play MSU again. Let them sit on a dick for a year before playing Michigan again. They beat us in our number one sport. We returned the favor.

Look for another jump next week in spite of the expected wins this week. I expect the Wolverines to grow on everyone.
MState was no lower than #4 in any of the power ratings I looked at last week so their higher ranking was warranted. I am imagining MSU winning every remaining game this year except when we knock them out of the Big 10 tournament and then when we knock them out of the NCAA tournament. The Wolverines inspire my imagination.

Our focus has got to be on the BIG title, because it's sure as hell within reach now. With our remaining schedule, we're going to have Purdue on the road and OSU at home for difficult wins. Other than that, (on paper) we should not lose another game. That at the very least would only give us 4 losses in the BIG. If we get the OSU game we should have the crown or tie.
Go Blue!!

They're two games up but there are still 12 to play, and each plays us once. The odds are not great but it's not yet out of the question.
January 15th, 2018 at 4:01 PM ^
to compete for the title. That game is amazingly in a week and half. We'll know then whether we're still in it.
Odds are definitely not great. Much more attainable is a top 4 seed. Get to 13-5 in the conference and that's a possibility. 14-4 and it's a likelihood. Kick off the tourney in Detroit. Yes, please.
January 15th, 2018 at 4:54 PM ^
Exactly. The home Purdue loss is really what stings. That said, if Michigan can beat OSU at home (which they should) and beat Purdue on the road, they're right in this thing.
OSU and Purdue still have to play each other (in West Lafayette) and Purdue also has to travel to East Lansing.
January 15th, 2018 at 2:27 PM ^
So, wait...
MSU (16-3) hasn't had a credible win since November, loses 2 of their last 3, and are at #9.
Michigan (15-4) has several credible wins, was 1 point short of beating two top 5 teams in the same week, and they appear 14 spots below the team they just beat on their home floor...wtf?

How in the hell is it mathematically impossible? Each team has only played around five to six conference games and there are twelve games for Michigan left to play. We get one more crack at both Purdue and OSU, so they don't own any head-to-heads over us just yet. We also have no idea how they will both fare down the stretch. EVERY team loses a game or two at some point that it has no business losing. Are we going to win the Big Ten? Probably not. But if we beat Purdue next week (which we are more than capable of doing) we are literally right back in the race.
It's like we're ten minutes into the game, we're down by five and you already want to throw in the towel and go home. I think you're being a little dramatic.

what sux is our scheduling this week. after this coming sunday's game, we will have played 4 games in 8 days. that shouldn't happen. i will be shocked if we don't drop one of the next 3 games. it would be awesome if they could sweep.
JB and crew are at there best when they have a few days to prepare for an opponent. it's why he is successful in the tourny. this is eliminated this week, which sux.

I don't see that Spartys resume is any better than ours the difference is they started ranked high and they get the love because they are MSU. the funny thing is that Spartys never say anything about them getting seeded better or put into a easier bracket come tourney time because they are MSU Basketball yet they bitch because we get put into a New Years Bowl every year and they don't and they say its because of brand and its not fair
