Michigan Athletics Interesting stat

So in these dreary summer months when there are no Michigan sports teams to watch, I started thinking after the baseball stunning run to the CWS finals that we can add baseball to the sports that Michigan is nationally competitive in..That got me to thinking..How many of our teams have finished in the final four of their respective sports or their sports equivalent of such,  like the CWS,  in the last 10 years and after a little reseaarch the number was pretty spectacular...15.

15 different Michigan sports have made that level...MBB,MGYM,Hockey, MSOC,MSWIM,Wrest,WXC,FHockey,Softball,WGYM,WROW,WSWM,WVB,Water polo

I only went back 10 years.

I know we get frustrated because we cant seem to get the title in any sport lately but we are right up there challenging for it in a large number of sports.. Im sure there are a couple of other schools who could make this claim (ie Stanford) but not many.

AND the future is pretty bright in most of these sports..and Lacrosse as well. The day is coming soon where Michigan will win multiple National Titles in the same year..Bank it..sooner rather than later

We don't have equestrian, fencing, jai alai, and other boarding school sports, so Stanford will always reign supreme*.

"The future is bright" has been said a whole lot on these boards for a long time only for it to result in more comments of "the future is bright" at a later time.

When does the future become the present?

You went all Spaceballs on him

Colonel Sandurz: Now, you're looking at now, sir. Everything that happens now is happening now.
Dark Helmet: What happend to then?
Colonel Sandurz: We passed then.
Dark Helmet: When?
Colonel Sandurz: Just now. We’re at now, now.

You whine a lot kurpit.

Would you prefer the future to be dark and lacking all potential.  Speaking only about football, do you remember what 2008 felt like?  How about nearly losing to Akron, or getting whipped at home by Minnesota?  Do you remember when Michigan made Rutgers' QB look like he was an All-Conference candidate?

Michigan has perhaps the most difficult road to a conference championship and the CFB Playoff of ANY P5 team in the nation because of OSU.  They've been the MOST consistent program over the last 20 years -- while we were declining, they were ascending and maintaining their momentum.  It's sucks, and it's been discussed here ad nauseum, but it is what it is.  Michigan is going to have to become better than it ever has been in the modern era to win championships.  Again, that sucks (maybe) but it is what it is.  Quit the impatient whining and understand that this a Herculean task that Michigan is trying to accomplish.

Michigan needs to start a Korfball league.  They can fly to Belgium twice a year to play.

Tangent: While it seems a little odd to call gaming a sport (since that usually implies more physicality), I have come to realize that folks watching others play video games is not very different from me watching others play football.

You better up it to 16 before WD chimes in... you forgot cheerleading. They are on scholarship, I enjoy watching them, they battle injuries, Drake Johnson’s mom is  the coach and they bring home some sort of trophy in some division....so they’re a sport in my book.

I do actually like non-revenue teams and actually participated on one while at Michigan. That being said, given the choice between the status quo or a world where all of the non-revenue sports were cellar dwellers but football and basketball were contending nationally every single year and winning national championships every few years, I think 90+% on this board would choose the latter.

Silver linings still mean a cloudy day....

You have to go back and count '97 as us being in some sort of "Final" in football (if that year had a CFP, we would have been in the final against Nebraska), so let's call it "the last 25 years:" No school has been champ or runner-up on all four sports that are traditionally the 'major' pro sports. '97 football, '11 hockey, '13 and '18 basketball, '19 baseball. In fact I think it's safe to say that could go back to the 50's or earlier, and not find anyone else whose achieved that feat.

I only see Ohio State and Notre Dame as programs that could ever even think about matching that feat, based on past success. Other Big Ten hockey schools have a chance, obviously, but have not all reached the upper echelons of all four sports. And I'm not sure OSU or ND have really even had a whole lot of CWS-level success in baseball.

The success of so many teams is impressive, and it is well worth remembering that we are fortunate to be represented by so many fine student athletes.

Unfortunately, most commentators on this blog seem to be preoccupied with football, and to a lesser degree basketball. Nothing wrong with that: blogs serve special interests. The trouble is that it leaves them vulnerable to taunting from mischievous (toxic?) trolls when results disappoint, as I have noticed on some other threads.

Doubtless it helps us avoid the pitfalls of pride.

And develop the virtue of determination.

There is always next season. Go Blue!
