Michigan and Dr. O on GMA this AM

I was lucky enough to take the morning off to get my kids on the bus today and tuned in the news.  When ABC switched to GMA they teased a story coming about about Michigan Dr. Okanlami receiving a $1 million donation for his work for individuals with disabilities.  Dr. O was briefly my PCP and left an impression on me that I had to google him after my first visit.  I recall talking to him about being a track athlete at Stanford and Harbaugh trying to recruit him to the football team.  He casually dropped then that he was working with Harbaugh on some projects at that time as well.

Anyway, a lot of Maize and Blue and great PR for his program and the University on national TV this morning.  They surprised him when they showed up, surprised him w/ $100,000, and a few minutes later opened another box w/ an additional 0 balloon making the total donation $1 million.

it's not politics, there were lots and lots of examples of his quackery and outright malpractice before he ran for the senate.  i'm sure a simple google search will confirm this.

on second thought, i guess his embracing of conversion therapy could be considered political, or, more accurately, assholery.

Loooong before he became a carpetbagging wannabe politician, he was well known for being a snake oil salesman who abused his background in medicine to convince people of all sorts of pseudoscience. The dude is shameless and will gladly tell your grandma some miracle cream will fix her hearing issues if he can make a few bucks

Brian isn't charging you by the letter, so a longer title would be more informative for those of us who don't know who "Dr. O" is or what in hell "GMA" is:

"U-M physician Dr. Oluwaferanmi Okanlami presented with $1 million donation on Good Morning America"

He is one badass human being. You can genuinely see/feel the admiration of the people around him and he is instantly humble in taking the focus off himself and giving credit to his team. Clearly someone who will leave this world exponentially better for the lives he has touched.

It is unfortunate that in our society he would not be inspired to run for office, any office, and would likely get destroyed in the shit-slinging MMA/circus-ring that is our current election process, but as a society it is this type of leadership we need to learn to elevate. People who can wield power, but do not crave it and after a short stint, gladly put it down and move on. I'd vote for him in a heartbeat.
