Michigan and Dr. O on GMA this AM
I was lucky enough to take the morning off to get my kids on the bus today and tuned in the news. When ABC switched to GMA they teased a story coming about about Michigan Dr. Okanlami receiving a $1 million donation for his work for individuals with disabilities. Dr. O was briefly my PCP and left an impression on me that I had to google him after my first visit. I recall talking to him about being a track athlete at Stanford and Harbaugh trying to recruit him to the football team. He casually dropped then that he was working with Harbaugh on some projects at that time as well.
Anyway, a lot of Maize and Blue and great PR for his program and the University on national TV this morning. They surprised him when they showed up, surprised him w/ $100,000, and a few minutes later opened another box w/ an additional 0 balloon making the total donation $1 million.

That made me happy. And a big Go Blue!

Very cool. Thanks for sharing. I didn't know about Dr. O.

It would be be better if you spell out Dr. O full name in the title. People might think you are referring to Dr. Oz.
October 20th, 2022 at 11:19 AM ^
Yes, I hope this isn't about Dr. Oz.
October 20th, 2022 at 11:32 AM ^
I like Dr. Oz. I enjoyed watching his show.
October 20th, 2022 at 11:54 AM ^
A lot of people did: they're called morons.
October 20th, 2022 at 12:38 PM ^
So just because you don't like his politics, I assume, then every single person who liked watching his highly successful medical help show is a moron? So reductive and childish.
October 20th, 2022 at 12:59 PM ^
I don't think you need to involve his politics to know that he's a snake oil salesman at best: his endorsements of homeopathy and reiki are well-known among his audience.
October 20th, 2022 at 3:59 PM ^
Dr. Oz's promotes snake oil for boners.
October 20th, 2022 at 1:02 PM ^
it's not politics, there were lots and lots of examples of his quackery and outright malpractice before he ran for the senate. i'm sure a simple google search will confirm this.
on second thought, i guess his embracing of conversion therapy could be considered political, or, more accurately, assholery.

Loooong before he became a carpetbagging wannabe politician, he was well known for being a snake oil salesman who abused his background in medicine to convince people of all sorts of pseudoscience. The dude is shameless and will gladly tell your grandma some miracle cream will fix her hearing issues if he can make a few bucks

I’m fine with his politics but I thought his show was dangerous snake oil type stuff. I agree though I have no idea who watched his show and to call them morons is reductive and unnecessary.
October 20th, 2022 at 11:28 PM ^
His show was not medical help
October 20th, 2022 at 3:08 PM ^
Sorry, I guess I am a moron then. I enjoyed watching his show. Wow, you people are ruthless.

As a chemistry teacher I can't stand Oz or Panera. The worst...
October 20th, 2022 at 11:32 AM ^
Oh I'm sorry. Does Dr. Oz go by Dr. O for short?
October 20th, 2022 at 12:04 PM ^
Unknown, but Oz may have more notoriety among the general public.
October 20th, 2022 at 12:35 PM ^
Hopefully Michigan's Dr. O has murdered way fewer dogs.
October 20th, 2022 at 2:45 PM ^
That's one heck of a non sequitur.
October 20th, 2022 at 2:52 PM ^
Yes, to pay tribute to Oprah. She's responsible for Dr. Oz having any sort of current fame.
October 20th, 2022 at 9:57 PM ^
In three weeks, it'll be Senator-Elect Oz!
October 20th, 2022 at 10:48 AM ^
Thank you for posting this. What an inspiration. Wow.

I thought maybe Olu had already knocked out a Ph.D. in his short time on campus.

Awesome! thanks for sharing!! Go Blue!

Brian isn't charging you by the letter, so a longer title would be more informative for those of us who don't know who "Dr. O" is or what in hell "GMA" is:
"U-M physician Dr. Oluwaferanmi Okanlami presented with $1 million donation on Good Morning America"

Tough crowd. Sorry for the extra clicks and learning that happened w/ your experience. Duly noted.
Edit: w/ = with

It's ok. Welcome to the Alternative universe, friend. For those of us outside the corridor, thank you for this post.

Yeah, that and what the hell does “this AM” mean??? Would it have killed you to type “Ante Meridiem”?!?

What's U-M?
October 20th, 2022 at 12:27 PM ^
that's beautiful - thanks so much for sharing!
October 20th, 2022 at 4:58 PM ^
Negging this for optimism.
October 20th, 2022 at 12:52 PM ^
A free long commercial for U-M.

He is one badass human being. You can genuinely see/feel the admiration of the people around him and he is instantly humble in taking the focus off himself and giving credit to his team. Clearly someone who will leave this world exponentially better for the lives he has touched.
It is unfortunate that in our society he would not be inspired to run for office, any office, and would likely get destroyed in the shit-slinging MMA/circus-ring that is our current election process, but as a society it is this type of leadership we need to learn to elevate. People who can wield power, but do not crave it and after a short stint, gladly put it down and move on. I'd vote for him in a heartbeat.
