Michigan’s football helmet since Carr (plus Biff Poggi)
Over on Reddit, /Bluemzv12 put together this post that starts "Michigan’s football helmet has made some significant changes since the end of the Carr era, and I believe it’s currently at its peak; a brief recent history (in comments)"
The subreddit for Michigan also has this post: "What was the key to Harbaugh’s turnaround at Michigan?"
The first comment is "This article on Biff Poggi is super interesting and suggests Biff is one part of the answer to this question."
The article is, indeed, super interesting. "Poggi’s role wasn’t just managing the assistants, but Harbaugh, too" is just one quote from it.
Finally, I have a stat for you: "Since Jim Harbaugh took over as head coach in 2015, Michigan has spent 55 weeks ranked in the AP top 10. The Wolverines have spent 31 weeks ranked in the top 5 and 10 weeks ranked in the top 3. For reference, Michigan spent one total week ranked in the AP top 10 from 2008-2014."

Odd potpourri of a post - generally not a fan

You mean he didn’t ask your opinion before posting?

Postpourri?

Your soups and stews must be really monotonous.

It’s kind of a nice grab bag for a Friday morning. Something for everyone. I like it.

B was the best imo

That was one of those articles you just can't stop reading, a thrilling peer behind the curtain. It's nice to see how healthy the inner workings of the program are. Culture is so critical yet surprisingly undervalued by many.

Wow…I knew we were bad, but that stat puts it in one hell of a perspective.

Is it good being rank? I am confused. I consider OSU Buckeyes to be rank and vile. I don't want UM to be like them.

This is the stinky response.

Speaking of Biff, I just started watching the HBO miniseries The Cost of Winning which follows Poggi and St. Frances’ 2019 season and there’s a clip in there where Biff is on the field having a 1-on-1 with Corum and he tells him, “you’re the best player in the country and you’re going to my school and I think that’s the coolest thing.” It made me smile.
Then it later shows the team heading out to Cali to play Mater Dei and talking about how the opposing QB they’re about to face is unlike any they’ve seen before. That QB, Bryce Young, went on to absolutely shred them.

I mean, Byrce Young is pretty good. Hopefully the Lions can grab him in the draft come April... And yeah, I need to watch this series...

I also think the blue chinstraps on the current helmets look totally badass.

I'm also a fan of the blue face mask.

Yes, and I hated seeing yellow (Adidas) wings instead of the proper maize. Sticking to the proper traditional colors is my preference:

Maybe its just me but I much prefer how it was in the 90s and early 2000s, the color was way more distinct than now which is comparable to West Virginia or Toledo.

First, thanks OP, excellent recommendations. I appreciate it so much.
Very interesting post about the helmet. I totally agree with the poster’s take. Pairs well with the all blue uniforms, which is my new favorite. I look forward to checking out the HBO series.
Another day, another day of great content on MGoBlog.

That article on Poggi is very interesting - thank you for posting. For the last year I’ve wondered what the secret sauce was in turning around what was by all indications a dysfunctional culture since roughly 2017-2018. Biff Poggi is a treasure and I’m glad to see him get the recognition he so clearly deserves.

Saban’s praise of Poggi is designed not with Poggi in mind—he's trying to fuck wth Harbaugh's staff—he wants Poggi to leave Michigan because he doesn’t want Michigan to ever be competitive with Alabama, or any other SEC school.

I knew nothing about Biff Poggi before I read this article. It seems that the formula Michigan and Harbaugh were missing in years past may have been found. The team seems different. Harbaugh seems different. The talking heads speak of team chemistry. Sounds like Biff Poggi is the chemist. Great article.

Awesome Biff Poggi article. (link in link) I miss Greg Harden but Biff sounds like someone qualified to complement that role. I am reading Culture Code by Daniel Coyle at the moment, and this is timely material.

I really dislike the curved ends of the wings. Looks too try-hard.

Damn fine content OP, great job.
I would have missed the Poggi article for sure.

Great article on Poggi’s impact on the coaching staff. Thanks for posting the link.

I know we have short memory spans, but the Poggi article had its own thread on Nov 8. I don't care about the repost because its a good reminder for a great article. But I am a little surprised that some of the people here claiming to have never heard about it are some of the Blog's most active posters. Yet, a quick look through all the posts show that nobody posting in this thread actually did post in that thread! For some reason, that just amaizes me!

Duplicate, sorry about that.

This adds a bit of history to the “hat on a hat” approach.
I like the history. Maize is a tremendous color. And, like all Michigan fans, love the winged helmet.
Go Blue!
