MGoFriday POSBang! 1980s Roller Disco style

Submitted by UMProud on April 5th, 2019 at 4:10 AM

Happy MGoFriday!  For those of you old enough to remember roller skating to disco music back in the late 70s and early 80s here's a video that will bring back some memories.  For you young pups you don't know what you missed...before the internet, texting, cell phones and computers we actually went out of the house and hung out with our friends IRL...omg I know right?

So many great memories...we would go out on Friday & Saturday nights to the local roller skating places and met so many girls back then.  Constantly had blisters on my feet from roller dancing and spent a fair amount of money on new wheels or low friction bearings etc for my skates.

Growing up in Flint I went to a place on the east side I can't remember name now (played mostly funk) and another one out in Flushing.

Was great fun and good exercise...I still think I'd be pretty good if I tried it again but no way would I do this without a helmet haha.

Anyone else have any good roller disco memories?

(the way these guys skate is pretty much ow many of us hardcore skaters did it back in the day)

*Typical Friday night play list of dance funk

Me and my friends would go to Skateland in Woodhaven back in the late 70's early 80's.  Another Brick in the Wall and Fool in the Rain were two songs I remember they always played.  Not disco obviously but still pretty cool.  Good times!

Those are all trails I have been wanting to check out but up until just recently I didn't have others to ride with and don't really like trying out new trails by myself. I ride my local trails in Jackson by myself mostly but have been to Ft. Custer in Battle Creek a few times.

1.  there is no reason to pos-bang.  requesting neg bang.

2.  as a hockey player, i was way too snooty to ever be caught dead in a roller rink.  puu-leease. (provoking more neg bang).

3.  i guess roller derby is still a thing now?  i remember as a kid i always thought it was a cylindrical form of pro wrestling.  do they still do the bit where the way to score is that some person with a special helmet gets shot around the pack and after some unknowable event, would throw their helmet down and 'call off the jam'?

4.  in a world where our entertainment is more and more sedentary, good for those folks getting out and moving around some, meeting humans face to face.  with AI on the horizon, our world and how we interact is not only changing now, but also i think is going to radically change in the next decade or so.  kind of like that michigan marching band CD from 25 years ago re: you'll only find great blues songs in the records section of your local libraries, you will only hear/see about people interacting face-to-face on the TV you watch as your driverless car takes you to work/school/etc.

have a great weekend.

The "unknowable event" was actually pretty knowable-the person with the helmet got 1 point for each member of the opposing team they passed during the "jam" . Pretty straightforward.

This is awesome. Picking up girls at the skating rink was awesome. I can’t imagine only texting to communicate with a girl. Going to Movies was awesome a well. I was recently told by multiple teenagers that “movies are dumb” and “why would you waste 2 hours of your life watching a movie with a girl”. Times change I guess.

Remember the couples skate?  They would turn down the lights and guys/girls would go to opposite sides and wait for the music to start.  Me, personally, I would scope out who I was interested in and zoom over to them immediately.  It worked out great for both parties as they girls didn't want to be left stranded / unasked and the guys sure as hell didn't want to be rejected.  You skated together for a song or two then either went your separate ways if it wasn't a fit or you went over and had a pop or something together.  It was a great way to learn how to interact with the opposite sex.

Ahh yes, roller skating...  Watching that video makes it look so, ahem, ...  LOL!!  It tailed off in the mid-late 80's, but the 70's and early 80's still had rinks almost everywhere.  I think it's making a mini-comeback, but not for me.  I was never hardcore with it, but I'd prefer roller blades and some hockey - even in my somewhat more advanced age.

There is an ad on my MGo screen with a woman in a bikini who has righteous breasts.

Loved the slow skate girls choice. Guys line up on the wall and stick your hand out. If a girl slaps it she liked you and you could join her for the slow skate

I remember middle school skating parties.   “Couples skate!”  Holding your girlfriend’s hand on the bus ride home.

Still listening to Commodores, Earth Wind & Fire today.

Just can’t remember name of rink between Whitehall and North Muskegon on old US 31 ... getting old I guess.

It was CLC on the east side (Davison rd). I question your Flint roots if you don’t remember that.

I grew up off of Center and Richfield road, so it was about 5-8 min to drive there.

I know this is roller heavy today ...BUT the stadium is open tomorrow, and fine young student athletes will be taking the field for our enjoyment. People hate on the Hoke years, but his nighttime open practice was special for me. My first time on the field with live action. Blake Countess almost took me out while getting tackled out of bounds.

Our first look at Mr. Peppers.

don't know Eli--last August's open practice did feature this and people loved it (accept for the long lines at the stairs to get down on the field). I'm not working the event --NCAA gymnastics instead -- so I didn't receive the email with particulars about what's happening post practice.
