Meta: Can I be a Moderator?

Submitted by huntmich on October 8th, 2019 at 10:42 AM

First: THIS SITE NEEDS MORE MODERATORS. There are SO MANY SHITHEADS from other fan-bases who are polluting this site with trash that no Michigan fan wants to see. And there are other Michigan fans who aren't following basic rules of the site. And the content creators shouldn't be responsible for policing all of this.

I'm not a content creator on the blog portion of this site obviously, but I read and contribute to the board with regularity. And I think I have a level-headed finger on the pulse of what this blog is trying to be. And I want to contribute to the site being less of the shit show it has been since the Wisconsin game.

And if the answer is: "No, not you", can we please have some other people be made moderators? Others (I just saw Magnus, who is definitely a better option, offer his name up) are willing to take up the mantle.

This site needs more moderation. I want this site not to suck, in the way it has over the past several weeks, and also at other specific shitty times for Michigan football. I will do this for free. I just like the site.

Great idea. When I see something like that elsewhere, I usually don't bother reading.

The other thing I see mods do on other sites is remove the post, but leave it with the comment "post removed for violating board policy." This allows you to see who violated policy, helping you to evaluate future posts from that poster.

Some bad posters change their ways, others can be negbombed to Bolivia or removed (only to resurrect with a different username.) On this last thing, I'd sometimes like for proprietors or mods to work harder to ID a bad poster coming back with a different username. For the most flagrant abusers, I'd really like to see them publicly outed. While having my real name as my user name is kinda dumb, it also forces me to evaluate everything I write here. If guys were identified, particularly those with noxious posts, it might cause them to rethink what they are doing.

EDIT:  I guess what makes outing guys problematic is age. Can you legitimately expose someone who is a minor? I mean, we all do and say stupid things, but I suppose when you are 14, 15, 16, etc., it is slightly different than when you are a grownup.

In other words... deterring differential opinions, and enabling a popularity contest. Sorry, disagree.

I already see that type of activity on the Board and dislike it. I've seen the "Pack mentality, blood in the water" retribution against WD, and Sydney. Though their posts at times can be avant garde, or even lacking content at times, I just down vote that post and I'm sure it gets the point across.

There's nothing on this Board, that forces anyone to click on the title or read the conversation. If you disagree with a post say so, and others will disagree with yours. Censorship is a horrible way to go unless something is vulgar or grossly misrepresented.

Keep in mind though... this is the internet and there's a lot of places all of us go to glean information on our favorite team (Go Blue), so when people repeat that information, it's important that we correct it in a humble way, instead of chewing them a new a-hole, and calling them "stupid" (seen it multiple times) just because they're a little late to the party. Many of us have jobs, that we work at, and can't also read the day-to-day activities of "The Team".

Though I appreciate your opinion and input above, I just think it's horribly flawed and equates to small group politics and furthers the divide with many of the users.

Good day sir!

Certainly a possibility - can't argue with some of your logic there.  Not being in one of those clashing groups this is not something that I even considered.  Although I would argue that while that may be the case, the number of downvotes would need to be quite significant.  I've seen WD take his fair share but it's usually not in the area of -50.  When you get a shithead buckeye on here with something completely inflammatory that's when the massive negs come out and this is where I see it being beneficial.  Perhaps one solution would be to limit this to users who have been here <12 months.  Someone would really have to commit to the troll job then!

One of my issues for years was the groupthink that takes place. BUT I don't think that's the problem. It seems to be more rival fanbases or Twitterati fans creating accounts and posting inflammatory comments, that don't contribute to a dialogue.

Yes it's the internet, but that doesn't mean that every site has to allow any differing thoughts or opinions. If I want to read bullshit takes and "fans" who want everyone fired every week, I'll read RCMB or Twitter.

BrokePhD, are you familiar with ad blockers? Humans are.

https://adblockplus.org/

get this, put it on your computer, and you will see no adds. The adds I do see are from the analysis articles, which is fine. All adds on the mgoboard are blocked. Therefore, your assertion is not logical. It merely highlights your lack of technological prowess. to wit, if we are doing it right, there will be no revenue from the board. Possible exception, is the board encourages a sense of community that keeps people coming back for more PBONE.

I think the moderators are doing a good job. The really egregious stuff gets pulled. If it weren't for "bad" threads then there would be no threads. Why even have a message board then? Which brings me to my next point:

Bring back haloscan, or some approximation of it. A live chat is needed. People just want to talk ball and post snowflakes all day long. The message board is our only place right now.

Plus, I hate refreshing constantly.

I would still keep the message board for news items.

When someone says something you don't like, just down vote them. That satisfies people. Or respond negatively, that can also be satisfying . This can get crazy wild.

Hunt, I've thought about you but honestly you're a bit too aggressive. Moderators get a lot of power and I don't have the time to oversee them well, so temperment is a huge deal. People who get mad easily, or get frustrated by grammar issues and users who are still learning the community's norms, are not good candidates for mods. I've begged StephenRKing to be one, if you're wondering what kind of person we're looking for.
