Merry Christmas Eve Mgoblog!

Submitted by wolverinestuckinEL on December 24th, 2022 at 4:51 PM

What are you drinking?

What are you cooking?

Any fun traditions?

We do Christmas Eve with my sister and nieces, fill a pinata with candy and cash and let them go to town.  Got a prime rib roasting (too cold too much snow to bust out the smoker this year) and the bar stocked.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

Yes, the City of Brotherly Love - where brother's would rather beat the crap out of each other than say 'Merry Christmas' - uses Cheese Whiz on cheesesteaks.  I don't get it, and refuse to ever put Cheese Whiz fake BS on anything.  Perhaps I'm a snob, but on that reason I'll happily be a snob!

Covid suddenly and royally screwed family's plans to get together. Taking care of elderly parent, her first go round with it. I've got some Sierra Nevadas, some ciders, a bit of Jameson, a mask and some leftovers

But merry christmas anyway!

Damn that sucks, sorry about that.  If it’s any consolation, having dealt with Influenza A for the last couple weeks, Covid might be the better option.  Not that either is good, but the flu that is going around is BRUTAL.  Either way, good luck and Merry Christmas and hope she gets better soon.

Our tradition is going to the shitshow that is my MIL's. I cooked dinner, a nice pork tenderloin.

Nice knife we got her last christmas is thrown in the drawer with cheese graters, serving spoons, and other shit. She said it must not be a very good knife because it's dull already. Getting her a knife block ASAP. Though probably won't use it.  At least the digital meat thermometer was still here so I could properly cook the pork!

Kids are in the process of going to sleep so I just poured myself some of the whiskey I brought (Wild Turkey 101). There's no suitable glassware in the house for it so I'm using a 150 ml beaker from my late FIL's chemistry set. I should have brought more, my BIL will be coming tomorrow and we'll both need lots of whiskey after a full day of inlaws

Woodford (neat) in my glass and we’re enjoying Spirited (Apple TV) for the fifth time!  If you haven’t seen it, it’s a funny twist on Christmas Carol.  If you have seen it… GOOD AFTERNOON!

Peach schnapps. Only drink it on Christmas Eve. One of the oldest traditions I have.

Got the wife’s side over. Food coma has set in and gifts to be opened soon.

Tonight, I’ll wait for everyone to leave and the kids to go to sleep, and then Santa will go to work. The kids are too old, but that has never stopped Santa from being Santa.

Merry Christmas everyone!!!

Made the saltiest pastrami on the grill.  Added some sauerkraut and thousand island.  Only thing missing was Rye, but it does horrible things to my body.  Paired it with a 2022 vintage Coke Zero and I am a happy man.

A good friend of my wife's made us some homemade soup, cookies, and cheeses, left them on the porch, rang the doorbell and scampered away. She had heard that my daughter and I had COVID and was concerned that we were going to cancel our Christmas Eve dinner (but we're just pushing it back a couple days). She's a sweetheart.

Merry Christmas to all the good people out there!

I totally forgot, our new family “tradition” is my wife makes a whole bunch of treats and we play ding dong ditch with the boys and leave them on friends’ doorsteps.

The kids get super into it, dress up in dark clothes and army crawl through the yard to not be seen. They always get caught at least once and it’s usually good for some hilarious door bell cam footage.

The boys wanted brisket tacos for Christmas but I’m coming off surgery and ain’t no way I’m fighting the smoker in this weather, so sushi it is.

In another 90 minutes I’m due for another dose of oxycodone and then cruise off to a niiiiiice little nap.

Drinking: grape juice and seltzer on ice (alcohol free).

Eating: take out Chinese food (only decent takeout place open)

Fun traditions: take out Chinese food with the family on Christmas Eve. Yes, I know, it's a cliche but it's what we do. Regardless of the meal style/contents, the important thing is that the wife and I are still together (actually next to each other on the couch as I type this) and we get to look at and listen to the now grown "kids", sitting in the family home, being warm, happy, safe, and together again.

Gifts? Yep. Over the past week. Received a few, handed out a few, bringing a nice one home tomorrow or Monday morning.

Merry Christmas to all of you.

She's truly a gem. Yes.

And the 'nice' gift is a Sapphire Black i4 M50 coming back from getting a nice quartz coating. Weighs 2.5 tons (yikes) but 586 lb ft of torque with AWD is fun.

Much joy to you and your gem, XM. May your kids give you two nothing but happiness and pride. The proper term is nachas, it fits here perfectly.

👍🙂👍

Well, it's my third sober Christmas in a row, so there's that.

We're just hanging out here, alternating between football and movies. Wrapping gifts too.

We kept dinner simple - marinated strip steaks with garlic herb potatoes and a salad. Nothing elaborate as it is just myself, my wife and the kids. Well, the dog, cats, reptiles....they are all getting something, just not the food per se.

Happy Christmas, everyone.

The BIL and I have been sipping on a couple pours, Buffalo Trace barrel pick, and then WT Rare Breed.

Dinner was a shrimp marinara sauce over spaghetti squash 😋.

No dessert, but maybe a nice pour if Alberta Premium Cask strength rye🥃

Merry Christmas to all 🙏🎅🎄

Bourbon here. Bulliet mixed with some honey since we have have all been sick with colds over here.
Unfortunately, my smoker is buried under a 5 foot snow drift so we will be doing the tenderloin in the oven tomorrow.  Being on the Lake MI shoreline, this amount of snow is not unusual but I have not seen drifting like this in a long time. Stay safe and have a great Christmas all!

MGoWife went nuts baking for friends, family, and neighbors this year -- so spaghetti for dinner (like a couple of others here).

No drinky drink though as we're heading out for midnight mass in a bit.

I've been working on assembling a beef wellington for the 3 days.  Roast it tomorrow.  Should be nice.  Was -16 24 hours ago, supposed to be 60 and sunny tomorrow.

Merry Christmas MGoBlog.

Don't drink.

Don't cook. My wife cooks very well, but we're going low frills as we're leaving tomorrow after church for a whirlwind visit with family. And whirlwind might be a literal concept this week given the weather.

Our varying travel arrangements with ministry have curtailed some of our traditions, because Christmas is a bit different every year. A lot of our favorite traditions happen in the leadup: We visit the local walk-through light display, Bentleyville. We set up the tree early-ish and play the same music every year. My wife makes the kids outfits, good ones, for a church service before Christmas. I live-tweet It's a Wonderful Life on twitter.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Though the Christmas Eve dinner is behind is us…. We enjoyed several bottles of pretty fine wine including a magnum of one of Orin Swift’s specialties.  The main course was beef tenderloin and all the fixins to complement it.  Desserts were tremendous.  We exchanged gifts with extended family  - and, we’ll open presents with our kids in the morning.

Opening presents Christmas morning is our family tradition - and, it’s Fantastic to have the kids back home from school for a couple of weeks.
