There are examples of players who've done exactly that (walked on at a preferred school instead of accepting a scholarship elsewhere). I don't have their names handy, and I admit I'm too lazy to do the research to substantiate my claim.

Having said that, doing so would certainly present a major financial sacrifice for the player and family, and possibly make the path to professional opportunities more difficult. I've been a U-M fan since 2nd grade, but I can't say I'd pass up a schollie from another D1 school to walk on at U-M.

In currie's case I think it was because the option was available and the coaches were looking for a player like him to fill out the 2018 class. I think they found a better player in Castleton so they changed their mind. For recruits like Marvin Bagley, I think it's solely to get the NBA a year faster.

Because the physical development body wise isn't as vital in basketball as in football, so reclassifying to an earlier year is fairly viable. In football, you really don't want to risk going too early because you won't just have a bad season, youll probably just get injured.

Great. Beilein is such a horrible recruiter, even with all the bagmen hiding in their caves, he won't do what it takes to hold on to the younger brother of 2 successful pro players, including possibly the best shooter in the game. We'll never replace genes like that.
