hate to break it to you, but no one outside the midwest really appreciates michigan as a prestigious academic institute. in la, no one even knows the difference between umich and msu.

if your school starts with "university of.." basically means nothing to people outside midwest

The fact you are apparently so deep into your prestigious career that you sit around with your colleagues discussing where you went to school makes me think you are in a weird profession. Most people don't talk about where they went to college decades ago unless they derive an outsized view of themselves from it.

That's probably fair depending on the profession; UNC is a fine school.  It's also one of the top-5 public schools in the country.  But in many fields, UM is regarded on the same level, if not higher, than Harvard, Yale, Stanford, UChicago, etc.  And UM isn't as elite as certain schools; only the most maize-and-blue diehards think like that.  But it's a top research school, produces amazing graduates across virtually all disciplines, and is a consistent global leader in research output, publications, and innovations.  It's all a gradient and it's not like there is a clear line between "elite" and everyone else, but UM is regarded as a fantastic school and I've never heard anyone dismiss it as a lesser unless they are uninformed.

You're a troll. I've been working in academia from the Midwest to California and people recognize the Michigan name. You're just a fucking clown. The fact that you include Duke instead of U of Chicago in your list of "truly prestigious" schools for the highest educated shows that you don't know shit about this.

When did the a school starting with "University of" make it prestigious? U of M is prestigious because it is simply one of the top academic universities in the country. Starting with "University of" means not a damn thing, and to insinuate that is ignorant. Based on your theory people in the Midwest must think University of Phoenix is one of the top academic universities in the country

You're in academia and yet you're making vast generalizations based on your personal experience.

On a lighter note, a friend of mine was in line to vote here in NYC wearing her M cap.  Cardinal Dolan happened to be standing behind her in line and said,  "Go Blue!  Except when you're playing Notre Dame."

At this point I don't think anybody would dispute that recruiting matters for both basketball and football. Just like MSU football fans have realized, we need more 4 and 5 stars. Even when we went to the final four, we had a couple of 4/5 stars in GR3 and McGary.
