I don't have any specific knowledge of Turgeon at Maryland, but I was at A&M for the entirety of his tenure there.  His predecessor was Billy Gillispie, who was a raging alcoholic who publicly flirted with the Arkansas job before leaving for Kentucky in the middle of the night.  Most people have nice things to say about Gillispie in College Station and I've never heard a good word about Turgeon.  I think something can be inferred from that.

Having a random good year doesn't really overcome a decade of mediocrity. Not to mention that team absolutely played less than the sum of its parts. The thing that was the most frustrating about Turgeon is that he isn't terrible, you can get a worse coach, but he also was never going to have a really good team that made a legitimate run

I think Turgeon and Maryland were just mutually sick of each other after 10+ years. He never won enough for what Maryland fans deemed acceptable and he clearly was tired of all of the negativity directed his way. Dude looked like he aged about a decade over the past 2-3 seasons.

He took a couple big name transfers which significantly raised preseason expectations, with knobs like Andy Katz declaring them a top-5 team in the immediate aftermath. Now that they're 5-3 and likely going nowhere, both parties probably figured they might as well just call it a day and get on with their respective lives.

Make no mistake, I'm not defending Turg. I never thought he was anything more than replacement-level as a coach.

Interesting.  The one Maryland fan that I know will be thrilled.  They seemed condemned to tournament failures with him.  I wonder what happened.  My lightly-educated sense is that Maryland is not committed to being a terribly clean program.

shades of that old kip adotta song, 'wet dreams'

I turned to him, I said, "Abalone -- You're just being shellfish"
Well, I knew it was going to be trouble, and so did Gil, 'cuz he was
already on the phone to the cods
The haddock hits me with a sucker punch
I catch him with a left hook
He eels over
It was a fluke, but there he was, lying on the deck, flat as a mackerel
Kelpless

I said, "Forget the cods, Gil, this guy's gonna need a sturgeon"
Well, the yellowtail was impressed with the way I landed her boyfriend
She came over to me, she said, "Hey big boy, you're really a game fish"
"What's your name?"
I said, "Marlin"

He's been trending down so I can see the desire to move on but this early in the season is unexpected.  Also, Danny Manning taking over doesn't strike me as a sudden injection of life into the program but I guess we'll see.

Of course, "mutual" sometimes has that ring of "resign or you know what we will do", and typically, it especially does when things are very sudden. I am sure many of us have seen that happen over the years in our positions. I kind of wonder what the story here is then, because this seems....out of the blue. Even if it is something as innocuous as him being on the outs with his boss or the university over something, I am curious now.

Feel like they just won the Big Ten a few years ago, but they seem to never do much of anything in the tournament, so that may be a big reason why. Still, its an odd reason to fire the guy right after the season starts, unless something happened off-court that we're just not aware of yet.

In any case, unless they've already planned to make an internal hire, Maryland should be able to get a good coach. Its a really good basketball school that can lure in some great talent on a year to year basis.

The first thing I thought of when I saw this was that Michigan and Maryland have had similar seasons so far - failing to even sniff the preseason expectations, surprising losses, trouble assimilating a lot of new players etc.  The difference obviously is that Juwan still has a deep well of built-up capital and love with our fans, whereas Turgeon had expended all of his in the last 10 years.

But it's still worth noting coaches sometimes lose their jobs after starts like ours and Maryland's.
