Malzone transferring?

Submitted by poseidon7902 on

Buddy texted me saying he was transferring.  I don't see anything on his twitter or in the news.  Any truth to this?

What would have happened if they put him in the game vs. OSU? We'll never know, but I suppose it's possible he could have thrown an accurate 10-yard pass on 4th down to a guy 20 yards in the clear.

Would have said the same thing about O'Korn when Speight was struggling. Coaches decided O'Korn was more likely to succeed than Malzone. I'm not in a position to say they were wrong. In this case, even hindsight isn't 20/20.

Anyone with insider insight know why the kid hasn't been more of a factor in the QB competition? I get he wasn't a Harbaugh recruit, but it's not like Malzone was some middling 3-star recruit, a roster-filler afterthought like Ron Bellamy. Had a better recruiting profile than O'Korn and Speight, and his senior year highlights were pretty good. Were there character/work ethic issues? Or simply not talented enough? (arm strength? reading coverages? etc.)

Already covered this upstream in the thread. Certainly not an academics or character issue. Theory is that when he was teammates with Perry at Brother Rice and the tandem was setting records, scouts attributed too much of that to Malzone and not enough to Perry.

Pure speculation on my part, but it's also possible his size and arm strength just wasn't enough to make waves in a Power 5 program. Maybe if his accuracy or if his running ability were off the charts it would make up for the other stuff. But if his accuracy and wheels were sub par or just OK, then not so much.

Keep in mind though, just because a dude never really cracks the 2-3 deep, it doesn't mean he wasn't a contributor in other ways. Somebody has to run the scout team, help with WR drills, help out the younger QBs learn the playbook, help with team social dynamics, etc.

Well, if he wants to play he ought to go somewhere else. Even with Speight transferring and O'Korn graduating, I have hard time imagining him passing Peters and McCaffery on the depth chart if he hasn't already.

Wouldn't blame him if he left.

So if Malzone and Speight are transferring...

McCaffrey is still redshirting...

That leaves our QB depth chart for the bowl game as Peters, O'Korn, walk ons?

Hey, like the rest of those who are transferring. I thank him for all of the good they’ve done for the program and his hard work. I wish him all the best in his future endeavors. That being said though (and as a pretty important man said)... Those Who Stay Will Be CHAMPIONS.
