Major Trade Alert: Carolina Panthers now own #1 pick.
Carolina acquires first overall pick from Chicago for #9, second rounder this year, first and second rounders next year, and WR DJ Moore.
Not a Bears fan by any stretch, but that's good work by GM Ryan Poles.
Now, who does Carolina take at #1? Stroud or Young or other?
Do they get the flu in Charlotte? Asking for a friend.
Yes, and it does snow also.
The (annoying) friend has another question. Does Carolina ever have to play teams that will have remotely equal talent?
I also heard that it's sometimes sunny and low 50s there too.
That's some good sleuthing right there. I've heard football can be rough in those conditions.
Massive haul for Chicago. I'm not as sold on the Panthers as an amazing spot for a rookie as everyone else seems to be, especially without DJ Moore.
what a great spot for Chicago, several teams sent them best offers. The Lions always seem to win in the last week to give them worse picks. Thank god last year they got Aidan.
Gonna be Young.
If I were making the pick, I’d be very leery of Young’s size. He’s not a favorite here, for obvious reasons, but Stroud has the size and the arm. He was excellent against Michigan both times and had an outstanding game against Georgia.
I agree I'd take Stroud over Young. Young played behind a much better line than he will to start in the NFL (relative to the competition.)
I'd take Levis over both, especially if I had a year or two to develop him.
I think Levis looked great in the combine, I agree, think he could be the next Allen in Buff.
Dockers would have also looked great at the combine, help even Lululemon's would have.
I'm a lunch pail guy, so I go with Carhartt and Wrangler.
Stroud played behind a good oline and in a weaker conference, not sure your take on Young holds up
I think we saw that Stroud did not like pressure in his face and lost accuracy. In the league there is always pressure in your face.
Was Bama's OL better than OSU's? I see OSU has several linemen projected to go high in this draft. Stroud was also working with a better WR corps than he may have in the NFL.
Stroud has the makings of another OSU QB who throws to open receivers in a scheme made to make a QBs life easy with a never ending supply of top 100 receivers and then can't hang in the NFL. I frankly don't care about Young's size. He has the moxy, arm talent, and mobility to be a big time NFL QB. If he was a few inches taller, he would be the consensus #1 pick and it wouldn't be a debate
Size seems overrated…see Russell Wilson, Kyler, those just off the top of my head
I think Arizona would like a do over on Kyler Murray.

Size seems overrated
Not the best argument when you list only 2 guys and both had subpar years. Obviously you don’t need size to be successful, but it certainly improves the odds that a QB will be an nfl talent.
Stroud is the easy choice. Size, arm, accuracy, and plenty of good film. Is it all a big mirage because of the system he was in? Possibly. I’ll take Young’s intelligence and moxy, and Stroud’s measurables.

Size is also helpful for standing up to the pounding they receive but, no, it is not at the top of the list of valuable characteristics.
Another? Fields and Haskins are the only OSU QBs in recent years who were seen as future NFL QBs. The Bears think enough of Fields that they’re passing on this year’s crop. Haskins’ problem was between his ears.
Play Skool
"Stroud has the makings of another OSU QB who throws to open receivers in a scheme made to make a QBs life easy with a never ending supply of top 100 receivers and then can't hang in the NFL."
I don't disagree, however what you explained sounds a lot like Alabama's QBs as well.
Except by Alabama standards they had a shit OL and receivers this year. On talent alone, Young is the better QB, but 204 (which I seriously doubt he could maintain in-season) is practically wispy for a QB.

On talent alone, Young is the better QB
No idea how you can qualify such a statement. Unless there is a talent-ometer, or some other objective judge of talent that you are referring to, your statement holds no water.

Not sure what you’re talking about? Tua, Hurts and Mac Jones are all NFL starters. Hurts went to the Super Bowl.

Except Bama currently has multiple NFL starters (Jones, Hurts, Tua). OSU has fields who rarely threw more than 25 times a game - jurys still very much out on him.
None of us on this thread (that I know of) has the burden of actually making Charlotte's pick, so this is all yip-yap at this point. Chicago got best market value for their pick, but you can bet that Charlotte knows who they want and has done a ton more research on the various draft QBs than any of us. They're in a difficult position, though, with having to do something about their dreadful QB room, but knowing that about half of the QB taken in the top half of the first round since 2016 are ham'n'eggers. There aren't any can't-miss prospects this year, they all have at least one red flag, two if you count having to play behind Charlotte's OL.
“Excellent”?
I seem to remember him throwing multiple picks and getting sacked multiple times in those two games….
That's a good haul, but I thought they'd get 2 future #1s.
I think they'll take Young.
This is a good development from a Lions perspective, increases the chances 4 QBs go before they pick.
Now Arizona just needs to swap with Atlanta...
The Twitter rumor is the Bears demanded Moore instead of a 2025 1st (which Carolina preferred to do). I think the Bears were right on that. The WR free agents aren't all that attractive this year, they needed the help there now, Moore's only 25 and under contract through 2025.
Too bad he’ll be largely wasted in Chicago

Hollywood Brown and AJ Brown both got traded for 1st+3rd picks. With the current WR FA pool, Moore is probably worth that, or more. So the Bears essentially moved back 8 spots to get the value of two firsts, two seconds, and a third. It's also possible that the first next year is an overall #1 again, bc the Panthers with no CMC, no Moore, and a rookie QB will almost surely be a bottom 5 team. Especially with perennial bad teams like the Lions, Jags, Jets all being better. The Bears could also be very bad, which would leave them with two very high firsts next year for a QB if they're ready to move on from Fields, or trade back again and roll one #1 pick in 2023 into stockpile of high end draft picks in 23/24/25.
#1 overall is highly unlikely. Carolina almost wont their division without CMC and with Rhule for part of the year. And the Bucs are now rebuilding. Carr wont make the Saints much better they still have a mess of a cap.
Good move by Poles. Still not convinced he's a good evaluator of talent or knows how to build a team.

This definitely seems like a make or break year for Fields doesn’t it? Year 1: bad, year 2: not as bad, maybe a glimpse of a great qb at times. Year 3 there will need to be a substantial leap. Either way, excellent moves by the GM. I don’t think Young or Stroud are enough of a guarantee over Fields so definitely a good move.
Great haul for Bears. Bad trade for Panthers. Five players for one? Eep.
Moore is going to be a pain for the Lions. Lions really need to focus on CB now.
That said, this improves the odds of getting a shot at Anderson. Not sure they will go after Carter now with his legal issues.
I will never understand why teams will give up so much to move up only a handful of picks. This day and age, if you have the #1 pick, you should 100% trade it unless there is a generational player because there will be a team that will be willing to give up an absurd amount to get there. Bryce Young is not worth a potential #1 receiver, and 4 potentially good to very good players. Not to mention the Bears still have their 1st rounder next year. Bears could be in business
Plus it's not like the Panthers are just a QB away from a super bowl. That team has a lot of holes.
Isn’t Carolina for sale by owner right now? That may have some impact on this deal, GM reaching for the stars to keep his job.
No, David Tepper is your typical hedge fund billionaire and spent $2.275B to buy them.
Washington is for sale.....thank God
It has been for many years.
Oh wait - you meant the football team, didn't you?
This makes up for how much the Bears gave up to move 1 spot for Tributtsky and pass on Watson with Mahommes out there too. I will never understand what the Bears saw in Mitch over Watson to sell the farm.
Carolina is turning into a dumpster fire real quick, I've lost count of how many QBs they've started lately...and now they've given up the farm to draft either a guy whos less than 6' tall or a guy who to me was less impressive than Justin Fields with probably a better group of receivers.
It’s the Panthers they will draft another 🐊 NFL bust in Richardson, I guarantee it. I live in NC, they make the dumbest choices on QB’s.
March 10th, 2023 at 11:47 PM ^
I agree. They will take Richardson and regret it for years.
My rule is never take a QB high who wasn't the talk of the town during the season. The combine/draft-season All-stars always flop.
Best quote of Combine Season.
"They are pajama Olympics" - Dan Campbell
I agree. I live just north of Charlotte and it sounds like they really want Richardson. Couldn't they just trade to #3 to get him? Seems the Panthers keep mortgaging the future and coming up short
March 11th, 2023 at 10:26 AM ^
I just can't wrap my mind around the Richardson hype. Great developmental guy to take in maybe rounds 2-4? Sure. Top 10 pick? I don't know what people are smoking. Dude was pretty mediocre at Florida and being able to jump super high isn't exactly an NFL QB must have
