M Swim dunks #15 OSU for the 19th straight time

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

The #6 ranked Michigan Men went down to Columbus today in a quad meet against #15 Ohio State, West Virginia and Buffalo.

Business as usual.

Michigan took 11 of 16 events, two each for Anders Lie Nielsen and Paul Powers.

Michigan beat Ohio State 187-111, West Virginia 220-77 and Buffalo 229-76.

Michigan has beaten OSU 19 straight times, including 48 of the last 49 meetings dating back to 1962-63. Wolverines own the series with a 69-11-2 record.

The Wolverines are now 10-0 this year and that's 51 consecutive wins for the Men. Head coach Mike Bottom is an astounding 68-3-1 here and 43-1 against B1G teams.

BUT WAIT, there's more!

He also coaches the Women who are also ranked #6 and showing signs of dominance that the Men's program has had its entire history.

They took down #25 OSU, 162-138, moving to 7-1 on the season.

Both teams host pitiful MSU on Saturday at Noon for senior night. Both teams smacked MSU around (again) at their outdoor pool way back in October.

From the site-

The CSCAA Poll Committee produces in-season rankings of the 25 best performing NCAA Swimming and Diving teams in rank order at the time of each poll. The poll is not designed to predict the results of the NCAA Championship, but rather which teams would win head-to-head against other teams in the country. Ranking are based on performances that have taken place since the previous poll and include invites as well as dual meets.

At one point Michigan was #8. BS. This program is at its strongest right now. On a run that hasn't been seen in a very long time in terms the rate the championships are coming in.

Take a glance at the 5th paragraph of your OP, as it describes an impossibility as currently written.  Although it's easy to figure out what you meant, it's impossible in a literal sense.

Suggested revision:

Dating back to the 1962-63 season, Michigan has beaten OSU 48 times in the last 49 meetings between the two teams, including the current streak of 19 in a row.  The Wolverines own the all-time series over the Buckeyes with a 69-11-2 record.

The team's national ranking has more to do with the times individuals/relays have posted than their dual meet record. Technically, it would be possible to have an excellent regular season record (especially in a conference like the B1G where there are some not-stellar teams) and still have relatively few swimmers who would score in the top 8 at NCAAs.

Edit to add: The power rankings at SwimSwam have M at 3rd and provide some context for that assessment.

The dual meet record really means fuck-all when it comes down to it.  Yes, a dominant dual meet record signifies that you are faster than the other teams you've swum against, but these athletes are really training for B1G's and then NCAA's.  And this year, who the hell knows what is going to happen with the big aforementioned meets because it's an Olympic year - Olympic hopefuls may not taper much for the NCAA's in order to save their taper for trials later on in the early summer.

However, it is always a day worth living when we beat the Buckeyes.  GO BLUE!!!
