M Soccer gets first win ever @Notre Dame

Didn't get to see this game tonight (screw you ACC Network) but I followed it on twitter.

Michigan traveled to Notre Dame tonight in search of a key resume building win for their NCAA Tournament profile.

This game was scoreless with Michigan having a slight advantage in shots.

Until the 89th minute!!! To be more precise, just 1:15 left in the game. Jack Hallahan was taken down in the box and Michigan was awarded a penalty kick, a dream scenario.

Michigan's leading scorer Nebojsa Popovic took the PK and buried it for the goal to put Michigan on top of Notre Dame 1-0.

ND almost had a chance to the tie the game with 15 seconds left in the game. There was a near-handball in the box by a Wolverine but the ref ruled it no-handball. ND's Aidan McFadden was given a red card for going at the ref after the no-call. Amusing that ND whined about a call considering they were the benefactor of many last year in the NCAA Tournament matchup between these teams.

Michigan got the 1-0 win over Notre Dame. The first win in program history in South Bend over ND (0-6-3 prior). It's only the 3rd win by the Wolverines over the Irish in the 20-year history of the program.

HUGE win for Michigan's NCAA Tournament resume.

Michigan is now 7-4-3 (2-1-2 B1G) and will return home to face Wisconsin (2-10-2, 0-4-1 B1G) on Friday at 6pm.

Yeah, its pretty sad all around...  The anti-WD crowd I just don't get.  Everybody posts things that not everyone likes, downvote it if you wish, but otherwise ignore it and move the fuck on.  And for soccer, it's not my game but I can appreciate the work and effort that goes into playing it.  Again, if you don't like it, move on.  There is nothing here that compels people to read/comment on every thread and/or post.

Except the simian-koala feud.  That batshit is out of control and needs to be settled in a tree cage fight.

I've been on this board longer than I care to acknowledge. I get why people don't like WD.  I have very differing political beliefs than he does, too. I just think down voting an excellent post regarding Michigan athletics that I would otherwise not have known about is rather juvenile. Not sure how it helps anybody.

Watched the second half on youtube TV with my daughter. A listless affair until the final minutes when Michigan stiffened its spine and scored the beautiful penalty. A minute later, Michigan absolutely positively committed a handball in the box at the other end of the field which likely should have meant a tied game. ND's tears of rage were a beautiful thing to behold.

The Hallahan penalty was close but they got it right.  The handball at the end was 100% obvious and it's crazy it wasn't called.  ND got screwed.  They went nuts.  The ref gives a red! card.  It was glorious.  FWIW, we seem to be a much more dangerous team with Hallahan out there.  If he gets fully back in form we just might make a little noise.

As I understand it, the win gets UM much closer to cinching an NCAA berth, which is exciting. A few years ago, as they moved into a new facility, etc., it looked like they would start making some soccer noise. I've been disappointed that more hasn't happened.

The women, btw, are ranked 16 and doing great.
