A little venting allowed - Best Social Distancing Fail you've seen

Submitted by BlueMan80 on April 4th, 2020 at 1:18 PM

So, most people have had 2 weeks or so to practice social distancing, but it sure must not be registering with some people.  Or, they have a total lack of self awareness.  Anyway, I thought it might release a little collective steam sharing some of the better social distancing fails we've seen so far.

While I've had my share of people stopped in the middle of the grocery aisle staring at the list do some form of mental inventorying as people queue up behind them, these people appear to be a dime a dozen.  Happens every time I'm in the grocery store.

Yesterday, I had to go to my local butcher to get more meat.  I want to support their small independent market, so I'm willing to run the coronavirus gauntlet and extra time.  They use the big paper roll dispenser to get a number to wait your turn for service.  As I was walking towards the dispenser, another lady stops in front and grabs her number, then just stands there and has a lovely conversation with her daughter.  I'm debating what to do and decide the best move may be to just wait her out.  I'm certainly not in a hurry.  A few minutes later another lady walks toward the number dispenser and pulls up short realizing there's no way she's going to stay 6' away from the gab fest going on at the dispenser.  She stands there, shuffles around a bit assuming some motion may catch their eye, must have been giving them a bit of the stink eye at the same time, and the lady starts to move.  But, she moves all of maybe one foot, two if you are generous.  When gabby lady gets her number called for service, she finally breaks the log jam and moves away from the number dispenser.

Oh, gabby lady was also wearing a mask, so that implies some awareness of coronavirus.

She needs to go to Bolivia.

Dude, Corona is a beer that got named for a virus. If my Sparty crush gets the rona, then I'm losing interest in her. There's always her friends that I could go bonker over.

Was taking a walk around the neighborhood yesterday and a neighbor (in his late 60s) had a tree trimming company in his yard doing some work.... normally not an issue with social distancing as the workers are outside and have ample space to work while keeping keep a safe distance.  However, all three workers were standing under the same tree while a single person did the cutting... while my elderly neighbor stood 2 feet away watching and talking.

Talking a walk and was passed by a group of 8 people obviously not related talking about how they don’t think people are taking this serious enough...

People gathering in large groups along the river in NYC to take pictures of the USNS Comfort. God forbid they missed the photo op for their Instagram

YES!  I saw that also and I couldn't believe it! Everyone was almost piled on each other behind a fence trying to line up shot or video. Also, saw a bunch of nursing home workers come out and crowd around one another to get pictures of police and emergency vehicles doing a "lights and sirens" parade to honor their work in New York.

Not about distance but on the train there's a genre of rider who is hyper-vigilant about the face (mask or full helmet) but not wearing gloves.

People don't understand that they're better off not wearing gloves but washing their hands frequently. They contaminate all their stuff with the gloves they've used to touch everything. Mrs. Foam saw a friend at the grocery store yesterday who was wearing gloves and had to explain to her that her purse in the cart was now contaminated, as was everything in the purse, having dug around in it while wearing the gloves.

Keep in mind, the vast majority (99+%) of transmission of this virus appears to be person-to-person - from being close to someone who sneezed/coughed/exhaled in your vicinity and you breathed the germs in.

People are getting obsessive about their groceries being contaminated when the possibility of contracting the virus from touching a surface is very small.  To the extent it happens, it would mostly come from touching something like a door handle in a public place (and then touching your mouth).

The main thing to be careful about with your hands is to make sure you've washed them before you touch your face or touch food that is going in your mouth.

True to a point Jmblue but the virus can live on different surfaces for many hours. Someone with the virus may have transmitted it to something in the store you purchase by touching it breathing or sneezing near it. If you can leave the stuff in your garage over night or wipe it off when you bring it in and then wipe off the counter you put it on

If you are concerned that the virus exists on the surface of your cereal box, wash your hands after you've put the box away.

There is no evidence that the virus, when on a surface, replicates itself and spreads to new surfaces.  In other words, putting that box in your pantry will not cause your whole pantry to become contaminated - it doesn't work that way.

Viruses cannot replicate outside their host. They are not "alive " in the sense of a bacteria that is a cell and can divide inside or outside a host but actually " die" if the enviornment is inhospitable. A virus is a complex protein that will " denature" and lose the shape necessary to infect when dried out or heated. A large RNA virus like corona is easier to denature since it is large and its structure complex. A slight alteration in its shape and it cannot be rocognized by the host

I find that wearing gloves helps me to not touch my face.

I leave the store, put groceries in trunk, return to store front and put gloves in trash. Now I don’t have to clean my car when I get home. I still have non-perishable items in my trunk from yesterday. Will bring them in house tomorrow.

Wife went for a run with our little son in the jogging stroller.  99.99% of people have been great about spacing themselves in our Royal Oak neighborhood.  Two grown able-bodied men out for a walk together turned the corner and walked towards her; opting not to cross the street or take any initiative to maintain social distancing.  My wife had to take the baby stroller across a yard, over the curb, and into the street as part of a last second ditch effort.

Hello neighbor.  I saw some shit at CVS on Woodward yesterday. A woman, probably in her late 50's, wearing no protective gear of any kind, had a complete meltdown. She screamed at the cashier, and then the manager, about not being allowed to return a can of nuts. Spittle flying everywhere, face all red, ranting about the nuts and some other BS.

I intervened after a couple mins and offered to pay her cash for the fucking nuts if she would just get out of the goddamn store so the rest of us could check out and leave.  That seemed to snap her out of it, and after exchanging some words with me, she finally left.

The manager thanked me since she was about to call the police.

Later,  we went to Ray's for some ice cream and a group of 8 went in ahead of us. Some were obviously related, but I doubt they were all living together. We waited for them to leave before we went in.

Tldr: Lady lost her mind at CVS and I didn't think to record the event for YouTube and ice cream parlors are too small for proper social distancing.

I haven't seen anything close-up. I feel fortunate. Online tales are numerous. These are the ones I remember:

I'm one of the people ( Red Baron) delivering to and stocking shelves at grocery stores. I'm a foot or two away from customers scrambling to get there their groceries. I have no chance of distancing myself. Hope this ends soon.

EDIT....just to give some perspective, I'm in Westnedge Meijer in Kalamazoo right now. Just had an old timer walk directly at me (2 feet) whistling a happy tune. Thanks for the spit particles Asshole.

Yesterday — 64 deg.  at 5 pm. on a Friday. What do you think was happening at the notorious  “party” houses on S State. You got it...beer pong, loud music, red solo cups. One house had maybe 6 so maybe they all lived in that 3-4 bedroom house. The next one right at the corner of Hoover had at least twelve people (dumbasses) again at a small house. My wife was ready to yell at them from our bikes but I distracted(dissuadedj her. Maybe I should have let her vent.

Yet here you are signaling your virtue in the opposite direction. You've made your feelings clear, how much longer are you going to carry on saying the same things? You're just opposite sides of the same coin. No matter how much it bothers you there's nothing you can do about what's happening so give your "virtue signaling" a rest.

No, now you are virtue signaling about not virtue signaling. This is worst worse kind. You’re a bad person who probably wants to reuse your shopping bags because “I didn’t know that was frowned upon In our brave new world.”

It’s best if just share a story about someone who didn’t social distance your satisfaction.
