Lebron James Opens Akron Public School Funding 240 Kids Straight Through College
Say what you want about him on the court, but off the court few athletes come close to what he's doing.
Jalen Rose comes pretty close with his school in Detroit, but even his school is a charter school. James' school randomly selects from a pool of students' who are academically falling behind their peers in the 3rd and 4th grades.
Here is the Rachel Nichols' interview with him and the Time Magazine piece.

Okay then... (tries very best to not curse out MGoBlog 3.0 for missing basic elements of modern web design)
Here's the Youtube Link with the interview.
Good on him for not shutting up and dribbling.
Most generosity I've seen since Scott's Tots.
I was thinking the same thing while I was sitting in The Office.
I think this is a great idea. There's some political woofing around the edges of this, but whatever: The stuff I've read he's including in this school is important and creative, even if every idea doesn't automatically work out. This is a great philanthropic effort.
At the very least, it's an interesting experiment because a lot of these types of situations either just don't work due to some form of incompetence or cronyism.
sort of like public schools.
I think you could just say education in general in this country.
I'd put up many of my students against just about any adult in the world, lazy education bashing is garbage
I work in a school. My complaints are with admin - both school and district, colleagues and state and federal officials that know nothing about education trying to make policy decisions. That's where the operation of schools is failing. Not the kids.
I've tried to hate him but it's hard, it really is.

"That's what she said" - speaking of Michael Scott
Not a Lebron fan, even though I'm in LA.
But this is good, applaud him.
Social media is just noise. This is walking the walk.
This is an example of how charter schools should be run(Jalen Rose Leadership Academy another example).
It's not a charter. It's a full on public school.

Is this a good time for a truck driver joke?
Have you heard the one about the truck driver, the president, and the porn star walk into a bar???
I think so. They're all the same person right?
I’ve always liked King James. I truly believe at this point (aside from winning additional b-ball championships) he only wants to earn more $$$ in order to help more people.
Even though very powerful people use LeBron as a tool to keep people in the dark this is an awesome move. Bravo sir.
Could you elaborate on the keeping people in the dark part?
You know what's great? Tuition.
You know what's even more valuable? Intuition. That's the ability to foresee what's about to happen.
Do any of you know what's about to happen? You're going to make me say it aren't you?
Alright...I've made a terrible mistake. Im not going to be able to pay for your tuition.
He's paying for:
tuition (which, if it's a full fledged public school, why would there be tuition?)
Uniforms
Transportation (within 2 miles)
College tuition (for those that graduate)
Lunches & snacks
A stocked pantry
And GED assistance for parents.
the first thing I wondered was, "how is that a sustainable business model?" I'm genuinely curious. Donors?
If you wanted to read about the project instead of being a snarky ass, you’d read that about $2.9 million came from the Akron schools general fund in the early stages (with about $8.1 million coming total over the next five years), financial and non-financial resources are being provided by 35 partners to help out, and LeBron’s foundation is covering the balance.
But yeah, totally not worth doing because they didn’t satisfy all your questions.
Not being snarky ass at all.
Sorry that you got downvoted by people who have no idea what you're referencing even though it was referenced earlier to fabulous posbanging. If it makes you feel any better, the votes don't matter right now.
And over half of Ohio is going to hate him anyway because he left again.
Ohio doesn't deserve him.
This is great and hopefully more mega rich athletes will do the same with their communities.
It's rumored that Derek Jeter helps support the Kalamazoo Promise.
My first thought was that educating Ohioans would be throwing good money after bad, but on second thought, the smart ones do find a way out. Nevermind, he wants then to go to college in Ohio, where a degree won't matter to any employer out of state. Sad.

My only question is, what happens to those students who aren’t selected? If you weren’t falling behind academically, are you actually punished by not getting to attend this school (and getting the full ride later on)?
