The last time an opposing OL was called for holding against Michigan was against MSU, then Air Force
That's pretty incredible. In 2016 Michigan B1G opponents had two holding calls all year. There's also this story from a few years ago that raised my eyebrows.
Ohio State was just called for their first hold in Big Ten play since 2013. This is not a misprint. 0 holds called on them in 2014.

same time may be going on...
1. Refs don't like Harbaugh and Michigan, and it shows up in the calls.
2. Holding at the line of scrimmage is just not called very often. Usually only really flagrant holding gets called. [weird aside: holding on DBs tends to be called at the slightest hold. Why the discrepancy between DB and o-line holding standards?]
3. M's o-line is actually holding more because they are generally having problems in pass protection.

Yeah, given the state of the OL and [lack of] discipline on the team, the holds against the offense aren't that surprising. Even still, the lack of holding when M has had Taco, Worm, Hurst, Glasgow, Gary, & Winovich rushing the passer feels egregious.

I think there is a reason Harbaugh is very quiet this season on the sideline. Either he was warned by BIG administrator or he was forced to do so by sensing dark force behind the refs.
Hope there will be some inside info leaking out later the year. BIG is indeed corroupted. I seldom see basketball because of the bias officiating at most home field. It's just not barable for me to watch the refs. Injustice ruins those kids' and coaches' hard work.

you have one of the best DLs in the country in back to back years and holding is almost never called. Do the refs just let everything go then? Because if so, let's let our rickety OL employ that tactic from here on out
October 23rd, 2017 at 10:24 AM ^
"Do the refs just let everything go then?"
To a large extent yes.
Ohio State - who has a DL arguably as good as ours - has also only received the benefit of 5 holding penalties called against opponents this year.

opposition Oline holding is rarely if ever called when Michigan is on the road, and called only when Michigan is at home or a neutral site based on the numbers shown here.
I tend to think that Big Ten crews are regularly influenced by the crowd and some are intimidated by certain coaches. Whether there is a Harbaugh factor influencing the calls this year, these numbers would tend to suggest there isn't. Oline holding tends to be a homer call.
I would make this one observation, that the crew that worked Michigan-OSU last year has not been assigned to any Michigan game this season, thus far. Take that for what it's worth.

Five years ago. He looked great albeit ordinary-sized. We disliked each other due to politics and neither held back. But physically The Hulk appeared to be in good shape. Other than hearing issues, he appears quite robust.

MSU was called for a couple, the latter of which wasn't a good call, either.

I'm not generally a conspiracy theory guy but we seem to get robbed over and over again in recent years
October 22nd, 2017 at 8:53 PM ^
Start flopping. Seriously. If that's what it takes to get a call.
October 23rd, 2017 at 12:33 AM ^
We need to hire a good soccer coach to teach how to dive or flop. That's some hell of technique. Many fan may hate that, but it may end up protecting the players being late hit so often without being called.

Chase Winovich has been tackled more times than some of our RB's.
MSU got away with 5 or 6 blatant holding calls and yet Higdon gets called on our big play.
Bill Carollo is the head of officiating in the Big 10.
I have emailed him at [email protected] - but of course received no response.
October 22nd, 2017 at 9:21 PM ^
LOL. If you expected the head of B1G officiating is going to respond to a fan...
October 23rd, 2017 at 7:48 AM ^
But what about 115,000 fans? Do your finger stretches boys and girls, we have work to do.
October 23rd, 2017 at 8:01 AM ^
Von Burg,
I knew he wouldn't respond.
My point that I wanted to let him know is that the volume of missed calls is alarming. There's 8 officials on the field - what are they doing?
We should expect some calls to be missed, but not 6 or 7 that are high impact calls. The personal foul that was called on Bush, that should have been called on Allen directly led to MSU points. Unacceptable. The refs need to stop influencing the outcome of these games.
I'm sure Carollo is getting paid a nice fat 6 figure salary. He needs to improve the officiating.
I'm no longer one to say the bad calls even out...That's B.S. - I've seen too many games decided by poor officiating. Just between OSU last year and MSU this year, I've seen an easy 12-15 calls that were missed or blown that went against us.
Fix the officiating. There's plenty of money and technology available to do so.

Refs are not accountable. THey get paid no matter what. Some are clearly unethical as proven above.

Compile a presentation of blatant holds, set a counter on the side complete with ratio of holding calls, publish the video, and tweet, FB and otherwise publicly bring notariety to the problem.
Send a link to Delaney x #s of our fanbase. Copy ESPN etc. MAKE A STINK. Else we're just complaining amongst ourselves for scant effect.
I can't do it. Hopefully a collective will step up. We already have the MGoBlogs as a platform. Get it done or let it slide. I have to believe our staff would greatly appreciate outside spotlighting the claimed gross difference.

Delany has been meddling in the outcome of games since day one. Bo called him out on it and he's been out to get Michigan ever since. Enjoy this article from 1990. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1990-08-16/sports/9003080807_1_wayne…

PSU was called for only a block in the back on Michigan's first punt of the game (IIRC). They then played roughly 58 minutes without 1 penalty against them ... nothing on offense or defense. I was at the game ... trust me the receivers were holding on run plays, the OL was tackling our D linemen - yet nothing gets called. We get hit with PI, offensive holding and defensive holding ... and PSU was never penalized on anything. Last time at PSU it was something like 13 - 4 in penalties. These stats defy all normal percentages. Surprisingly we had only 5 in game penalties (1 delay of game) - but even 5 compared to 1 isn't reasonable. In a game where everyone admits that holding could be called a nearly every play ... for no penalties against 1 team just shows a bias.

My theory is that Michigan’s front 7 fights through holds instead of falling, whereas our opponents go down more and make the holds more obvious

many of our holkding calls are just grabing, no player is down to ground. Why don't you jsut accept the BIG refs are bad?
