Klatt's Take on the Fiesta

Submitted by smotheringD on January 2nd, 2023 at 12:41 PM

22 minutes, a few points:

  • Credit to TCU, great game plan by a great team
  • UM seemed overconfident
  • UM coaching staff very good but assistants are young and underperformed in this game, they will learn from it
  • UM will be good, probably better next year
  • Red zone issues cost UM and OSU their games
  • Got to be able to win a shootout to win in the playoffs
  • Officiating, specifically replay, is totally broken
  • No way UM's touchdown should have been overturned
  • Definitely targeting on final play
  • Nationalize officiating, not regional

JJ is a very nice and agreeable kinda guy. How many football players go around with smiley faces drawn on their hands, meditating under the goalposts and smiling almost every time you see them? Lat alone finding all these qualities in one player?

When JH said that Rudock is cheaper than a $2 steak - especially after that big hit he took in (Minnesota?) everyone can see that. When Cade never smiles - like ever - and does his best to quietly chase away the new 5* QB after his job. Well, to me if someone said these guys had gravel in their guts (a term JH often uses) I'd have no argument.

Like I said, JJ is the Meechigan QB I've been waiting for all my life and I loooove the calm demeanor he showed in coming back - even (according to the ESPN announcer mouthing to his dad in the stands - we are gonna win this) but JJ has certain Pollyanna type tendencies that I think adverse situations like this are the universe's way of perfecting all of us - like when my Isiah threw the ball into Laimbeer in Boston in game 5(?) in 1987 and Bird stole it and kept home court advantage for the damn Celtics. Stuff like that ...

So, I'm hoping that by this time next year this adversity will, I donno, maybe keep him from going on the Rich Eisen show and talking about how he's chasing Tom Brady, that's his legacy. And that he hopes TCU stays in their 3-3-5 because we'll introduce them to B1G smashfest football.

Yuno - the kinda gravel in the gut that keeps you from motivating the little brothers of the world, like the horny toads.

Seriously. 2 pick sixes could kill a guy but he went right back out there and slinged it anyway. For all the talk about Duggan, I thought JJ showed a lot of moxie himself. He was certainly the better thrower (yes the two interceptions - but Duggan was really inaccurate, was not impressed at all with him as a passer).

This is all fine, probably accords with what many of us think.

But those first four or five bullet points sure look different if you place them AFTER the last four. If--in the (oversimple) calculus that gives us one more POINT than TCU is Roman Wilson's TD stands.

Or, possibly more important, if we're theorizing the game and how the staff plays it if Wison's TD is awarded IN THE SECOND QUARTER.

'Nuff said.

I don't think Overconfidence had anything to do with it.

After you get hit a few times, it's just football.

Michigan knew TCU would be good.

2 pick 6's, 1 terrible 4th down call, 1 awful overturn.

And we STILL had a chance if we don't give up a 1st down on TCU's last drive.  Nobody's talking about that.  2nd and 8 and they gash us for 7 when we know its coming right at us.  Killer.

Michigan just played their worse game of the season at the worse time, in the playoffs. Also some strange play calling on offense and defense. Great that the team was able to get back into the game but that all out blitz call on 3rd and 10 was just an awful call. If the WR were covered that long TD would never had happened and odds are we could have won the game. Oh well, at least we beat OSU and that is most important in my book every year.

The back-breaker was Turner's missed tackle on Johnston's 76 yard TD catch & run. We had just scored TD & 2 point conversion to make it a 3 point game (41-38). 3d & 7. Turner should have tackled him 4-5 yards short of the 1st down. Instead, they get TD & back to a 10-point lead. Huge momentum shift. We punted the next 2 drives. Who knows how it would have turned out if we made a stop.

At the very least, the ref and replay officials need to be miked and the conversation recorded. Maybe even play the conversation during the broadcast. There's too much secrecy.

Also, the national ref pool has great merit. On one side, there's an SEC team playing in a playoff game. On the other side, an SEC ref team has the opportunity to influence a game in the direction that the conference chooses to get the matchup the conference wants. After all, who pays the ref's salaries? Who are the beholden to?
