Kirk Herbstreit Is Dead to Me

Submitted by MGlobules on December 1st, 2020 at 7:25 PM

Kirk Herbstreit just suggested that Michigan would duck OSU two weeks from now on ESPN's Top 25 countdown show. When Rece Davis gave him an opportunity to explain what evidence he had that that might be the case, he had nothing. Zippo. Nada. He only offered that some coaches around the country are 'throwing up the white flag' when faced with opponents they cannot beat. Looked like a wanker on a barstool in Keokuk, and sounded like one, as well.

Highly irresponsible, coming from someone who styles himself a journalist; from a former OSU player on whom the onus for sportsmanship and fair play remains--on might hope--particularly strong.

What's more the guy has gotten [edited: intellectually lazy] during his confinement, and badly needs to [edited: cut all ties with his loathsome alma mater]. Ought to be censured by ESPN.

[I appreciate that the OP now understands that fat-shaming is inappropriate, as I take note of his apology further downthread. I took some um..."liberties" with my edit of the OP -rob f]

I mean, have none of you thought of the idea of Michigan not playing the game and keeping OSU out of the playoff?  (at least in theory)  I saw more than a few comments about it in other posts on this site.  As far as OSU alums who are analysts go, Herbstreit is probably one of the better ones.  I think I read somewhere that he moved his family to Tennessee partly because people in Ohio were always giving him shit.  Also, I got a little respect for him when he was one of the only analysts talking about how Michigan should be in the National Title game the year they lost on the road to #1 OSU.  Then what happened?  Michigan got wrecked by USC in the Rose Bowl.  I don't love Herbstreit, but I don't hate him either.

??‍♂️ Let’s not cry over spilled milk. I’m more concerned about the on-field product instead of what Herbie said. If they played better nobody would take digs at them.

His comments are particularly eyebrow-raising when his beloved Buckeyes had to cancel a game due to their own outbreak just days ago.  If OSU ran a ship as tight as UM on the COVID front, then the UM game would be inconsequential to OSU's postseason hopes.  Maybe he should direct his "concern" at Ryan Day for his lack of precautions.

But that would require him to be critical of OSU.

Exactly which would require good reporting which he didn’t do in the first place hence the retraction after some people got to him. Also Cleveland writer Nathan Baird called it a new low in college football coronavirus conspiracy nonsense, not based on facts or player safety but nonsense.

He apologized and that takes balls and integrity. These two ingredients for manhood are in short supply now. Forgiveness and moving on is the correct thing to do. That's good enough for me. He was not wrong, however, the cancel culture of UM can just cancel the OSU game and Herbstreit so they get two victories and can celebrate with PBR over the holidays

The thoughts they just come unbidden:

1) Could you blame Michigan for doing that?

2) He thinks so because it's precisely the kind of dick-move OSU would pull in a similar situation (see also: George Steinbrenner and Drew Henson, or the decision not to give the ball to Ezekiel Elliot, at home, in the rain, against MSU's playoff team).

3) Dang, that would be a real shame if Michigan were to have a COVID outbreak just in time to affect OSU's opportunity to play in the B1G Championship Game (again, forever and ever, dominance without end, amen).

4) This is precisely what we've come to expect from the 21st Century in general and 2020 in particular.

As an Ohio State fan, you probably don't care for what I have to say, but nonetheless..

1. Herbstreit was wrong to say what he did, insinuating UM would duck OSU. Shouldn't have said it, particularly with no evidence.

2. I thought his apology was sincere and he's generally been a very fair analyst.

3. I dont think Harbaugh or the Michigan players want to duck the game at all, they're born competitors, they want to play football - but for those of you in the UM fanbase who DO want to cancel it just because of how your season is going or recent history -  you are disrespecting The Game and yourselves with that nonsense. I don't care if OSU was on their 3rd team practice squad, The Game should always be played (unless serious medical reasons prevent it, of course).

Michigan might be an enemy in a football sense, but I carry a lot of respect for The Game. I think most other Michigan fans do too, I am close friends with many of you

I thought that doctors determined if outbreaks were to the point that games could not be played.

Is Herbstreit saying that the doctors are corrupt now too?

Were FSU doctors corrupt for not playing when everything was OK?

Or even worse . . . Clemson doctors corrupt for playing when everything was not OK?

All of this angst and hoo-ha about Herbstreit's comments will be gone by the time the clock hits zeroes at the end of this year’s UM-OSU game because the vast majority of Michigan fans will be wishing the game hadn’t been played to begin with.

Absorbing another Tombstone-style bitch-slapping at the hands of our most hated rival is nobody's idea of fun.

He tried being unbiased once and he was basically forced to leave ohio because his children were getting harassed and bullied in school.

now he only pretends to try being unbiased

It’s been a very tough year is a really shitty excuse for calling an entire football program a bunch of cowards on live TV

I hope Desmond Howard doesn’t just accept this mealy mouthed bullshit when he tries to apologize on Gameday this weekend

honestly, i'm so fcking sick of just about every talking head there is.  herbstreit - and bilas, come to think of it - are fine during a broadcast.  not great, they're fine.  fine.

but 24-hour sports and news cycles are killing us all.  the void exists, and so it must be filled.  people that 'deserve' our attention for three hours a week now have it for 168, and for the love of god make it stop.

i'm not 'stick to sports' guy, but we don't need to know what kirk fcking herbstreit thinks about literally anything that doesn't take place between the opening kick and the final gun.  EVER.

Well, I have been wanting Michigan to do this since someone pointed out the possibility of OSU not getting enough games in.

At that point it was not out of fear, (it was just after Minnesota maybe) but just out of spite to deny OSU the playoffs.

So I don't think Herbstreit has to apologize to me.

I don't get the outrage. Every Michigan fan on the planet has made at least one "well at least if Covid cancels the game we won't get our asses kicked" joke this year. Herbstreit just said what every one of us has been saying for months.

Herb Kirkstreet is a buckeye all the way.  Made up a source to report hiring of Les Miles before the LSU bowl game in order to sabotage it.   No integrity at all.  Pure buckeye supporter always on the job promoting OSU.

The football team is easy pickings right now. This sounds like OSU's arrogant Mike Hart moment though.

Rules aren't always "fair". Bo's 11 game undefeated, no bowl team led to a post season rule change. The BCS format may not be "fair" this year but it won't be because M ducks OSU.

OSU should be more upset with the advantages of Notre Dame and the SEC ( or join them).

Herbie regrets not playing for us... it is true... so on occasion the human condition causes one to throw us under bus, to keep things at even keel.

Another guy is Chris Speilman, who experienced parental child abuse by father, to keep him at OSU, and he wanted to play for Bo... on occasion he poked us, but for the same reason above.

Hear me out...but just maybe, just maybe, we as a society of reasonable people should just stop making a big deal out of everything these people say, tweet, etc and realize that the main purpose of these people saying, tweeting, etc. these things is to get people upset and talk about them.

I won't pretend like the thought hasn't crossed my mind. Canceling The Game 2020 due to COVID would spare the program further humiliation on the field, likely prevent OSU from participating in the conference champ game and CFP, and be a poetic FUCK YOU to the conference that voted to send OSU to the Rose Bowl in 1973.
