Kareem Walker Still on the Team

Submitted by DrMantisToboggan on

According to Chengelis, Baumgardner, and others on Twitter, Michigan people have denied the reports of Kareem Walker's dismissal, and he is still fully with the program.

I do not mean to call anyone out with this post, but there are at least some positive conflicting reports to the earlier information that was shared here. I hope it plays out with Kareem remaining a contributing part of our team.

It would be monumentally stupid to kick a kid off for smoking weed.  I don't care if its not that weed is bad, it's just 'he broke the rules'. The rules are dumb. Its already halfway legalized in the state and likely on the way to being recreational.  All of the players would be better served smoking weed for chronic pain than taking painkillers.

Honestly, it would be smart for recruiting to look the other way. If baylor can get josh gordon through NCAA drug tests, we should be able to get all our players through.

Dude all sorts of things wrong with this post. But all just mention 2. First off, it's about commitment. If you're not willing to stop smoking weed to play football, then priorities aren't right to be a D1 athlete. Secondly, i don't think we want Michigan doing anything modeled after the Baylor football program.

Hope the coaches give the dude a break. He has the most bruising upside of our RBs and is the closest thing to being the old-school Michigan Wolverine studback that we need in a run-heavy offense. Until we get a Scarboro, a Chubb, an Akers, a Barkley, a Harris, or a Biakabatuka Jr, we will need a guy like my man K.W. running it up the gut.

This is about ownership. I'm certain Kareem knows what the team rules are. I'm sure the rules aren't that onerous: go to class, don't do drugs, don't break the law, etc. If he wants to be a Michigan football player, he needs to take ownership of his actions and follow the rules. If he can't take enough ownership to follow those simple rules, it is unlikely he will succeed on the football field. The good news is he can learn from this and become a better player and person. If he has a problem, I'm sure the football program and university have the resources to get him the help he needs.

I suspect that if he wants to stay on the team, he will probably be spending some quality time with the new strength and conditioning coach for some 0500 workouts. Get after it. We are all pulling for you Kareem.

This is essentially the case.

As both a teacher and a coach, i absolutely DO NOT treat every individual, in every single aspect, equally.

Some kids come from harshers situations/backgrounds than others. Some need more discipline, some need more tough-love, some need more empathy. And some need more chances.

It's all case by case basis.

Anybody who criticizes from the outside or says otherwise, either works in media, or has been hi-jacked by media-created logic.

I want to give anyone that has earned it a second chance but this team needs to be laser focused and prepared for battle next year. I hope that Walker is committed to doing what Coach needs him to do, but the distractions have to go away. Harbaugh summed up the message on the early signing period when he said that the guys that are here are the guys that wanted to be at Michigan (paraphrasing a bit). This needs to be across the board with the team all the way to the coaching staff. I am confident that Coach is putting the things in place for this team to be successful next year. Get on board or get left behind. I hope Walker is getting on board. Go Blue!!

I hope he puts it all together next year. He's definitely got a lot of talent, and now that Isaac has left he's got a clearer path to the field, at least as the #3 guy behind Higdon and Evans.
