Just Shook Denard's Hand

Submitted by JimLahey on

Thread-worthy? I think so. Am I pathetic for being this excited? No chance.

Upon return from a semi-business trip to Florida, I exited my plane at Detroit Airport with my girlfriend, glad to be on land. As I looked ahead, a bundle of light could be seen, the brightness of which can only be compared to the sun, or possibly the headlights on those really expensive BMWs. What could that be, I asked? Of course, it was the smile of the one and only Denard Robinson, enough to brighten even the shittiest of days. Sporting my backward Michigan hat, block M for all to see, I went up to him and gave him a firm handshake and said "Good luck, Denard, You're the man."

I am around pro hockey players almost every day. I've met Crosby, Yzerman, Thornton, etc. But this was my first experience becoming starstruck. On the way home, after listening to me go on and on about Denard, my lady finally say "I get it....he's good, keep it in your pants!"

It was a festivus miracle!

I've seen a couple times around campus, and actually got the chance to have a brief convestation with him my freshman year (his freshman year as well).  One of the nicest people you'll ever meet.

I assume many of you have met him on campus, but I don't go to UM so I've never seen him, so this was cool for me. And since nothing else of note is going on, I figured I would post it.

ran into him, not literally, as I'm not quite fast enough haa....at the UM/ohio dual track meet his frosh year. What an upstanding young man. My son and daughter were too intimidated to shake his hand, now they regret missing the opportunity. Right out of the gates he missed the building record in the 60m by 0.01...aMAZING...he's a phenominal talent as much as he is a great kid. Congrats, I don't care how many pro athletes you meet, there are few special people who just change your perspective like Denard does...and I'm well aware of the guys you work with day in and day out...congrats...that's going to be a lifelong story for you for sure.

Yzerman! Seriously he brought the cup to us. Denard is truly a great young man, but Yzerman is THE man. They aren't even in the same solar system. I love Michigan football 10 times more than the Wings, but Yzerman. I agree with your girl, and you have to get a room.

to meet the guys you see out on the field/court/rink.

I remember when I was little, we stayed in the same hotel in Detroit that the Calgary Flames - for the CCHA finals, Michigan won - did and I got to meet my second favorite player - After Yzerman - Theo Fleury. Real nice guy, signed a couple of cards and took pictures with the whole family. I was like seven and starstruck out of my mind. The next day was the only time I've ever cheered for a Red Wings loss.

Good to hear first hand fan accounts that confirm what a classy guy Denard is!

It's amazing. I'm old enough to be Denard's dad but if I saw him somewhere I'd be way too starstruck to say hello. That's the power of sports in our society - grownups (and I use that term very loosely) blown away by 18-22 year old kids. At least the ones who are dilithium-fast anyway.
