Julius Welschof update?

Submitted by garde on December 19th, 2018 at 5:10 PM

Myself and others marveled at this kids's athletic ability on his training videos. Obviously, it's going to take time for him to adjust coming from Germany, but does anybody have any current info on him? How did he hold up this year in practice? Coaches thoughts? etc etc etc

thanks

I actually spoke with him earlier this year, he spoke about the transition to America and full time football being very different. He looks very athletic and will have a shot to compete eventually.  FWIW he is a very nice and polite young man as you would expect.

Threadjack: I really don't want to start another thread, but I did have a question. In looking at football players from the State of Michigan, I see that we got Mazi Smith and Karsen Barnhart. Great guys, and a great part of the entire class. Having said that, I was bummed to see other top 10 guys going to MSU, PSU, Wisconsin, Purdue in the Big 10, and LSU, Georgia, and Colorado out of the conference. I'm sure we would have taken Brown, Dobbs, Barnett, and Dixon, and probably Bradford. Do any of you know if we dropped the ball somewhere and sometime (Dobbs?), or if there just was an affinity elsewhere (Brown, Dixon?) Are things repaired in the relationship with Belleville? I completely understand the need to recruit nationally, and to take the best players possible at any position. Looking at 5 star players, they come disproportionately from Florida, California, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Ohio, and a few other football rich states. But the two 5 star kids from Michigan went to MSU (Dobbs) and Wisconsin (Brown.) I really hope that Michigan is seriously in the running for any 5 star kids coming from the State.

Brown would've been an amazing get, but his circumstances were unique in that he grew up always wanting to go Wisco and then Chryst managed to not screw that up.

Regarding the others, I would've loved to have Dobbs, but the staff was too late in offering and never showed enough love. Chalk that up to Drevno's shitty tenure--once we replaced him and brought in Moore and Al Washington our relationship with him improved a lot apparently.

It’s tough to see 5* OL heading elsewhere, but I think the Mitten State’s talent was down this year once you get by those two, Smith, and Barnett.  Harbaugh is competing where the talent pool is deeper, 6 from OH, 4 each from GA and FL, etc.  We’ll still get our share of good players from Michigan, just not all of them.

Dude, you are on the site enough to know these (especially Brown and Dobbs) were discussed ad nauseam throughout the fall.

The other thing, to add on what others have said, is that things are just different now. Kids see so many games on TV and get to know other schools so much easier then even back 20 years ago. They have so many more options and kids take advantage of being able to go wherever they want. Players are not as sure of a thing to go to their in-state school as they used to

Where were you in the signing day thread? Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, folks will find anything to worry about. Michigan is a national recruiter. Don’t ask them to sign players just to appease you. They’re trying to compete for National Championships, not state trophies.

They got the best in state guys they evaluated and targeted. Be glad that Harbaugh can recruit good Ohio, Florida, and Georgia kids. Our RB is from Cali.

We have the in-state homers and the five-star proselytizers—yet Harbaugh hailed in the top BIG class, as well as Top 4 nationally.

Stop it.

The good question , why do people just make a bunch of jokes to start after someone asks about a player? Just answer the person properly , than at the end , make your silly jokes

Ah, first time on the blog?  Joking aside, my assumption is it's easier to leave a snide remark with zero effort, rather than quality information.  Don't read nearly as much on here as I used to the last several years as many of the high quality posters seemed to have faded into the background due to such behavior.

Lighten up Francis. We got D. Hill and there will be videos of people eating lemons or penis shaped candies with defecation sprinkled in. There will be jokes a plenty coming our way. It's a happy time here at  mgoblog. Sit back and enjoy the ride my man, and no,we're not getting off your damn lawn!

To be fair it's not the best topic from OP - "can I get any inside info on random Freshman X" is a tough one for the board. He was a developmental prospect who wasn't expected to make a lot of hay as a freshman. He didn't. That's pretty much the answer right? Scuttlebut even for "insiders" is usually pretty limited on guys in his situation, I'd have to imagine. This spring would be the earliest I would expect people to be bringing him up if he's coming along nicely, and even that would be "early". This post on WolverinesWire from the fall is about as much depth as you'd expect.

My uneducated opinion based on observation is he is in much need to bulk up.  He looked rather small compared to the other DL.  He looked rather small compared to Hutchinson.

I know someone will spew some stats on his listed weight but, like I said, just based on observation.  Plus I wouldn't bet too much on the height and weight as provided by the school.

You would have to think that he is going to take some time to get used to the speed of the big ten and also that he is going to have to do some unique things to change to add to his body mass to get himself on the field due to his older age when he got to michigan in the first place.

After this season our DE depth is likely Paye, Hutchinson, Uche, & Villain.  Kemp could also see time at SDE, but he may be needed too much at DT.  I have a feeling that unless Villain is healthy and really good (or Uche puts on enough weight to be an every snap WDE) that Paye & Hutchinson will be play together even though they both played SDE last season.  So, Welschof is basically vying for 3rd string garbage time with Upshaw, which means 2019 is another developmental year for him.  I think he has a chance to backup Hutchinson in 2020, but with Hutchinson being the more touted guy and in his same class (although Welschof redshirted), he's likely to be a backup until Hutchinson moves on.  So, I'd say he still has another developmental year before he's ready to contribute with anything other than garbage snaps.
