Josh Henschke: "Jim Harbaugh and #Michigan is near the finish line"

Josh Henschke thinks it's a deal Jim Harbaugh will sign. But it's not a "done deal".

"Don't mean nothin' till you sign it on the dotted line."

But  Josh Henschke is a pretty good source. So maybe the wait is over, and for the last time.

Maybe

but not done til it’s done

and in spite of my own personal wishes I doubt it’ll be the last time.  It’s become an annual tradition, like Festivus.

I certainly don’t

it feels like such an old unnecessary momentum suck - but this is the 2nd year in a row (and there have been rumors of dubious origin and validity in previous years).  So, until it STOPS happening I’m just resigned to it being around no matter how distasteful I find it to be.  Sort of like The Kardashians.

It's killer on recruiting.

Michigan did great in the transfer portal. Maybe that can be a viable way to get players when recruiting is bad. The O Line pick ups were great. I do wish they had gotten an RB as insurance.

But really, I hope this is the last year, and Jim Harbaugh sets his sights on building a dynasty, something recruits trust.

One of the stupidest points in this "process" was when the Broncos interviewed David Shaw (I assume to satisfy the Rooney rule and not because they were seriously interested in him) and one "journalist" wrote about this and said that the Broncos interviewing Shaw was a sign that Harbaugh was definitely their top choice.  WTF?

But I was told by reputable sources at the Athletic that Harbaugh was likely to jump at an NFL offer.

And was told by connected UM sources like JUB that there was real smoke around him leaving and it could happen soon.

And I was told around these parts by really smart, handsome, super confident posters that Harbaugh was gone and that he sucked anyway.

And yet...here we are basically in the middle of January and he's likely to get a nice extension and, I assume, a bunch of other nice additions that will lead to him sticking around in Ann Arbor for a while.

I recognize this sort of sucks as a fan to live through but part of me is happy that after two straight playoff appearances and conference titles we're dealing with Harbaugh being too good a coach and not what the future looked like post 2020.  If this is the cost of two years of success so be it.

Upvote for economy of words!

I’m buying a power ball ticket!

Also, this is really starting to feel like Manuel was trying to be a tough negotiator and trying to show Harbaugh and everyone else in the AD’s universe who is the boss.

It’s a shame it took this kind of brinksmanship (and Ono intervention) to get the AD to where other blue blood programs find themselves naturally.

Yeah, sometimes those in charge can be dumb. Just this week I was promoting this person and, while negotiating salary, the employee and the company were about $5k apart, employee wanted 65 and company said no more than 60.  HR says to me “cant justify any more than 60” so I went to my boss and had it run up the chain.  This employee is very valuable and has earned it.  Me, the VP, and HR in a meeting talking about the number and finally, the VP says “we’re arguing over $5k. If we do your (HR) number, [employee] will be gone in 6 months.  What are we doing here? Pay up already!”

that’s  the leadership I want from my VP.

Wait, whut?  Dude, you write novels and you give us a one-worder for this?  No.  I do not accept this.  You need to write us a book on how and why you agree.

I'm pretty sure your account was hijacked by terrorists fleeing with you credentials, right now, to Thailand.

To be fair, his agent very well could have been using the media and "sources" to push that narrative as a bargaining chip. Personally, I never felt like he was leaving, but you can't fault those people for relaying stuff they heard, if they actually heard it. That's just the way these things go.

It's just the nature of the business. Agents use fanbases and public opinion to help their clients. The media is the best way to stoke that fire. It's not specific to this Harbaugh scenario -- like who knows if Calipari to Texas is real or just some tactic. Or Nick Saban to Texas everytime his contract needs a bump. But then there are Lincoln Riley to USC or Roy Williams to UNC type stuff that makes the thousands of other rumors seem at least plausible.

Sometimes people don’t understand that reporters rely on sources to the best of their abilities and in real time. Most of those reports were speculative in nature: If x happens, then y will likely happen, sources say. They can’t predict the future. And if you take speculative reports as gospel, you’re part of the problem.
I don’t happen to think reporters should do much speculating. But the audience, including this one, absolutely demands it. Then it bitches and moans when reporters speculate on the future, which nobody can do with complete accuracy.

And that's the key. Is he staying because he's surveyed potential NFL jobs and decided Michigan is best? Or did he survey potential NFL jobs, nobody wanted him, and now he'll sign a contract at Michigan? Like you, I'm pretty sure it's the latter which means this will continue to happen yearly.
