Is Jon Teske an NBA lottery pick after this season?

Under the tutelage of Howard, Teske looks set to make big strides this season after a giant leap forward last year. He's 7'1'' and decently athletic. With a year under direct coaching from Howard, I imagine he will be a better prospect than many of the 7' guys who have historically gone in the top 5 picks.

I don't pay a lot of attention to the NBA draft process anymore, but is this feasible? Based on game, it certainly seems so to me.

Maybe most modern 4's should be able to shoot and put the ball on the floor, but only a handful of 5s.

Top 15 centers this year in PPG:

Towns, Embiid, Drummond, Vucevic, Jokic, Thompson, Baynes, Whiteside, Bryant, Capela, Carter Jr., Zeller, Gobert, Valanciunas, Lopez.

Of that list, Towns is a great shooter.  Embiid, Jokic, Lopez are pretty good.  The other 11 aren't threats from 3 really.

Towns, Embiid, Jokic can all put the ball on the floor.  Vucevic has a strong post game often involving a few dribbles.  The other 11 aren't threats off the dribble really.

And that is only half of the leagues starters.  Really only the top few centers can shoot 3s or put the ball on the floor.  There are only 8 centers even qualified for the 3 point title compared to 29 PFs.

Because the NBA is a star driven league where you need a couple to even have a shot to compete, the NBA draft is much more about potential rather than actual college on court production. Teske looks like a high floor, low ceiling type. A good two way player that could certainly carve out nice role on a team but never a consistent all star type that teams are aiming for with lottery picks.

in 1999? He's a lock. in 2019? I'm not sure if he's an NBA player. The NBA switches everything and needs him to hit 3s. He's not even a stretch 4/5, he's a true Center. There just aren't really that many guys like that in the league anymore. Remember Roy Hibbert?

He's not a true center, at least not in the traditional sense because he doesn't post up. He's nothing like Roy Hibbert.  John Beilein runs a modern system and Teske thrived in it.  He's not an elite shooter from distance but he's a great pick and roll defender, he's can finish off the pick and roll and he does have an ok outside shot so he'll get an NBA look.

Was Teske even in the draft discussion after his Junior year? I don’t think he was. There’s your answer. Guys don’t climb 60 spots in their senior year.

He has a long ways to go before he could be considered a lottery pick. He could get drafted with a great year, but that’s pretty speculative at this point.

What makes you think Teske is better than Moe Wagner who got drafted late first? Moe is one of the most skilled bigs I’ve ever seen at the college level and he wasn’t lottery.

I really like Teske, but a lottery pick would shock me.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if he went late in the second round.

I really like him as a player at Michigan, but his NBA fit these days is shaky. He's just not a quick-twitch guy and it's hard to imagine him chasing guys like Clint Capella around the court.

Turn back the clock to 1985? First-rounder.

I'm not sure he's even a lock to be drafted right now. A LONG way between where his stock is today and potentially being a lottery pick. I don't see it happening under any circumstances.

I think he’s on the bubble to get drafted. Moves his feet well for a 7 footer, rebounds and defends well. Underrated passer. Needs improvement on his shot and shot blocking. His limited ceiling will keep teams away but I could see a decently long career as a backup center.

Honestly, getting drafted at all would be a big accomplishment given his lack of athleticism and floor spacing, not to mention the ways in which he could he exploited defensively in the NBA that can't happen in college.
