Joel Klatt Seems Confident Harbaugh Stays

Submitted by ndscott50 on January 4th, 2023 at 1:04 PM

Joel Klatt on Denver Sport Radio this morning, starts at 8:15.  Some interesting perspective on Harbaugh with Klatt believing that Harbaugh is likely to stay at Michigan.

Granted he and Gus did most of UM's games this year on FOX, it's easy to see why. Also when you win ALL of the games that he provides color commentary on, it's really hard to maintain partisanship when you see the players almost on a weekly basis.

With that said, I do find him easy to listen to and he really does understand the X's and O's. He's also not that old to where I think he can still provide insights from the mind of the players which helps him be relatable. When I lived in Denver, I used to listen to his local sports talk all the time and came away agreeing with him on most car rides home after work.

This all does make sense in that light

- Coach H wants to be at UM

- Coach H has shown himself to put principle above $ within reason over the last 2 years (pay cut and giving bonus money back)

- Coach H has a new agent

- Coach H has demonstrated he is a top 3-5 CFB coach

- Coach H would like a deal at UM that equates his contribution to his compensation

- New agent creates other data points (NFL interest) to show market for his client’s services and force negotiation movement

maybe there are other things at play (since none of us really know) - but if Warde M had provided a new contract after the B1G title game that had Coach H getting paid comparable to other top 3-5 college coaches maybe this whole thing doesn’t happen.

but what do I know, I can’t even lay claim to recently sleeping at a Holiday Inn express.

If that were solely Harbaugh's aim with all of this smoke and mirrors, then why allow the dicsussion with NFL teams to leak? All that does is hurt his recruiting ability at Michigan. Given his contractual obligation to notify Warde if he's talking to NFL teams, why let it leak to anyone else? He'd just be shooting himself in the foot.

Not saying that is the only case, but if he is being represented by a new agent, an agent is going to tell him to get out of the way and let negotiate the way he knows how.  On top of that, by going public there are all these adult fans melting down and having temper tantrums, which I am sure puts even more pressure on Warde to get a deal done.

My guess is that he gets a 5 year extension with a huge raise that raises his buyout significantly.  If he has a 25M dollar buyout, that will go a long way with convincing recruits that he's here to stay.  His "extension" last year was well below market value and the buyout reflected that.

At the end of the day, he would be a fool not to listen to the market and see what he's worth every year. I believe he want's to be here but how bad do we want him to be here? Who walks away from 10 million dollars? I'm not saying that it will cost that to keep him, I'm saying that Michigan is going to have to acknowledge his worth and put something on the table of value that stops other teams from coming after him every year. All the nonsense about how we feel doesn't mean squat when that kind of money is on the table. Tom Brady wont retire because there's still someone out there who's willing to pay him millions and he cant make that kind of money doing anything else that he loves to do. I believe we have our guy and if Michigan believes they have their guy then they make him a top 5 highest paid coaches salary, with a lifetime job. No NFL team would offer him a lifetime job so the bullshit stops.

The new agent does throw a wrinkle into the recent goings on.

I'm in Atlanta and a Braves fan.  I was initially sad to see Freddy go, then pissed with his crocodile tears after signing with LA.  His agent ran the whole negotiations and sold Freddy to the highest bidder.  This year I held off buying Dansby's jersey until he signed the big contract with the Braves.  Not getting one as I hate the Lovable Losers.   Same agent as Freddy, same result.

Appears that the new agent is playing the process to get the most out of Michigan.  In the end, I hope Jim stays.

Harbaugh should be at the very top of the pay scale for reasons that equate to on-field performance  What Warde knows is how Michigan Stadium, like most other programs, can start showing lots of no shows when you are losing as we did in Hoke's last year.

10K or 20K full seats times seven games times $150-300 (including the mandatory contribution) per seat is a lot of money.

I agree with XM too but not for the same reasons.  Where XM's thoughts have been more "emotional" and "spiritual", in my opinion, I'm thinking more pragmatically.  I don't think Harbaugh's been dishonest, but I do think he wants control over player acquisition.  He can't have that in the pros.  No GM is going to be willing to give up their power to that degree.  That's why I think he stays.

I think XM and many of us just take Harbaugh at his word.  We are not trying to be naive but until proven otherwise.

Harbaugh has every right to do what is best for him. He knows what the last go around did to recruiting because of the lengthy process and I’m confident he does not want to repeat that.

I would think one way or another this resolves next week after Monday with a large buyout contract with UofM or a quick NFL move.

As Michigan possesses among the largest alumni and fan bases, I view all of these rumors as click bait.

Coach Harbaugh has been truthful since he arrived.  He already stated he would enthusiastically be the coach at M in 2023.   Let’s all take a deep breath and go by that last statement.

If he does leave, the foundation is set for a long time.   It would be a vastly different situation than what occurred during the Troubles.

Just "staying" is the worst case scenario. It creates instability. I'd rather he leave then a "never mind, carry on" outcome. If he stays it has to come with a contract with language that prohibits this from happening again. They took his word last year. That's not good enough anymore.

If the type of instability you are referring to means we keep one of the very best coaches in football, and go into next year with a very realistic chance to win a 3rd straight Big Ten title and a return to the CFP, than that is good enough for me, even if it isn't for you.

Recruiting is the life blood of any program. Everyone has to admit that his daliance with Minnesota last year hurt the class. If you're coming off a playoff season you shouldn't be pulling in a 17th rated class. We went back to the playoffs this year so some people think we're fine, it didn't hurt us. That class isn't the backbone of the team yet. This team ran off of pre-flirtation classes. Keep flirting and you will get negative recruited and you pull in lower ranked classes in back to back to back years. Then when you depend on those classes to be the core of your team then you will see the true consequences of these annual NFL flirtations and then you wake up and realize we have dropped a notch or two from those '21-'23 golden years. So yes these years were good enough for me but I'd rather not ignore the pitfalls being created that will keep us from sustaining it.

I do not dispute that, but player development (which has been excellent) and the great increase in the significance of the portal, offsets to some extent (we can differ on how much of an offset), the necessity of top 5 HS recruit classes, to compete at the highest level. Top 5 class plus sub par coaching or top 20 class (and selective use of the portal) plus excellent coaching? I feel better about option #2.

And I know that people want the best of both, but that it isn't always an option.
