Jalen Mayfield talks UM 2020 Offense
Jalen Mayfield appeared on Jon Jansen's In The Trenches podcast today, and Jansen asked him about the 2020 offense. I will scribe Jalen's response below:
"It's a lot different then the other years I've been here. We have a lot of youth, but we have a lot of playmakers, and a lot of explosive playmakers in the offensive room. To see every day the amount of growth that our young guys, especially at quarterback, we made just through this little camp period that we've had, is remarkable. Joe - he's doing things I haven't seen anybody really ever do. Some of the reads, some of the throws he makes are just ridiculous. They are eye opening... we're gonna open some eyes this year. Everybody's going to be able to see in Saturday night... it's going to be fun"

Expectations seem to be at an all-time high for Milton going into this season. I would like to see our run game take off some of that pressure.
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:21 AM ^
So you are saying Milton is going to run for 150 ypg?
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:34 AM ^
I refuse to believe Michigan QB Fall Camp Hype. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me for the 10th year in a row, shame on me
October 22nd, 2020 at 11:02 AM ^
I believe the correct saying is "fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again.”

Yeah, I agree. Remember last year: The only way to stop this offense is if we stop it. Shea is doing Shea things (we now know what that means) With our receivers someone will always be open.
October 22nd, 2020 at 1:19 PM ^
And someone was always open! Unfortunately, that is when Shea did Shea things...
October 22nd, 2020 at 12:06 PM ^
You know what they say....Fool me once, strike one. But fool me twice.........strike three.

Especially when this QB is throwing against this team's secondary. Massive grain of salt.
October 22nd, 2020 at 1:26 PM ^
Yeah no one fooled you. All teams camp/preseason stories are fluff. Its entertainment and supposed to be fun. Maybe don't take it as gospel. No team is going to come out and say "We will probably struggle on offense because we are weak at the qb position." You don't talk negatively about your players/teammates to the media.
October 22nd, 2020 at 12:02 PM ^
Take Mayfield's quote and attach it to any of the last 15 years. Don't they always say about the exact same thing?
October 22nd, 2020 at 12:23 PM ^
Every year the same thing.
October 22nd, 2020 at 2:45 PM ^
The thing that gives me hope is Milton apparently won the starting spot so forcefully that McCaffrey transferred. There could be other reasons this happened other than Milton = awesome, but I think it's a good sign.

Surfacing of the submarine.
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:11 AM ^
Please be the fully weaponized speed in space we've been waiting for! I'm definitely ready to see it... or get hurt again.
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:23 AM ^
You'd think when breaking in a new QB you'd want to give him some easier throws to get in a flow. Hopefully that translates to lots of screens and RPOs.
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:29 AM ^
I am with you here. That is kind of the bread and butter of speed in space. We have speed and athleticism across the skill positions. Lets get the ball in their hands and rack up some yards after catch.
October 22nd, 2020 at 11:10 AM ^
The one thing I remember from watching Minnesota last year against Penn St, (even though they won) they gave the receivers a ton of cushion.
October 22nd, 2020 at 11:11 AM ^
And you'd think you could downplay all the hype before he even started his first game, but oh well. Too late for that. I have OSU coworkers who talk everyday (mockingly) about the fact that we finally found our savior at QB. Sure hope the hype doesn't backfire.
October 22nd, 2020 at 12:42 PM ^
Meh. The first decade of OSU dominance over UM was brutal. At this point I'm pretty numb to any mocking.
When their dominant run is over (and this level of dominance will end, everything does), I hope they look back and wonder why they only had 2 national titles in the BCS/Playoff era while Bama, Clemson, and LSU already have more.
I think any team outside Tuscaloosa would take OSU level success and consistency over the past 20 years, but there's also no doubt they've missed out on a bunch of hardware. While it doesn't change our situation as a program unwilling to embrace "football factory" (for better or worse), at least they are not winning the national title, for now, every 3rd year like Bama.
October 22nd, 2020 at 12:54 PM ^
I live in Alabama but not a fan of there team. When ever Sabin gives a press conference there is allways a bottle of coke sitting next to him, As if he needs the money.
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:15 AM ^
In two days, we'll see if we can trust the opinions of our coaches and players or if the team is just one big walking hype machine that never lives up to billing. Two days...
October 22nd, 2020 at 11:30 AM ^
I know what you're saying, but in two days, UM is going to playing in freezing weather with a likely drizzle.
That means it will be time for some smash mouth football (which we *should* be good at), not Joe Milton trying to grasp a damp football and throw it 70 yards in the air or put it up 35-45 times a game.
It's a long-ish season. I'm not going to judge Joe Milton on one game.
October 22nd, 2020 at 12:36 PM ^
Here's to hoping it's a grind it out game and when Minny starts to stack the box and bring their safeties down we get some P/A bombs to our speedy receivers.
October 22nd, 2020 at 2:39 PM ^
The continued insistence on trying to find even the smallest reason why we yet again have to rely on smashmouth and grinding it out is why we continue to be mediocre. Go watch real teams play, this is NEVER their startegy.
October 22nd, 2020 at 6:46 PM ^
I think the weather dictates when you play this style. Good teams dial it way down in inclement weather. I think that’s his point.
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:17 AM ^
I honestly think we will know after say 3 drives if this “Milton” is different and something we haven’t had around here in a long time. Otherwise we could have a lot of broken TV’s from the optimism we all had that came crashing down from pre-season/camp hype that is just nonsense. We all have heard the camp accolades for years, never sure I have heard one out of nowhere like Milton this year. Especially at such a pivotal position as QB. Please be true!!!!
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:40 AM ^
My TV will remain intact - it is the only appliance I have that aided my survival during C19.
I discovered unknown gems like “The Sniffer” a Russian creation which looked like it was written and directed by Putin.
I watched all of the Avengers in order, and discovered Hamish - which I think was a precursor to train spotting.
I am so ready for a vaccine..
October 22nd, 2020 at 11:02 AM ^
3 drives? You are giving Joe Milton three drives to determine whether he will be a special talent for Michigan at QB. I get we want instant results but there is probably going to be some growing pains.
October 22nd, 2020 at 11:20 AM ^
lol Drew Henson had more than 3 shitty drives early in his career. What an awful take.
October 22nd, 2020 at 11:28 AM ^
I am saying we will know early if Milton hype is warranted. Easy to see when guys have “it” or don’t. Doesn’t mean that doesn’t come with mistakes.
October 22nd, 2020 at 1:52 PM ^
Tom Brady’s first pass attempt on his first drive for M was a pick six. His next two drives looked shaky but he had a lot of help from outrageous talent around him, particularly the O line.
What are you expecting from Milton and how will it compare to his potential vs Tom Brady in your mind?
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:17 AM ^
Why can't Milton be as good or better than say Connor Cook?
Cook RS'd his 1st year, played a little his 2nd and then was a 3 year starter (average completion of 57.5%, 71TDs and 22 INTs). Ran a 4.79 40 for the NFL Combine?
Milton has a better team around him (much better OL, better WRs, similar RBs), same level of competition (although no cupcakes this year), better OC... Maybe that's his floor?
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:59 AM ^
He could be, but that probably isn’t the best comparison. CC had personal QB coaching throughout HS like most of today’s higher end prospects. Milton was considered a raw prospect since he arrived in AA basically without ever having the HS personal QB coach. This is generally the main source of the “Milton is going to take a few years” talk.
Im of the opinion that just about anything is on the table, from Heisman candidate to exploding in every direction. Something in the middle is more likely, but who knows.
October 22nd, 2020 at 11:29 AM ^
Connor cook had a damn good offensive line. Conklin, both Allen brothers, And a few other guys who were very solid college players.
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:17 AM ^
Big words, but I'm pretty sure we heard some big words in 2016 and 2018 so... prove it.
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:26 AM ^
2016 was arguably the conference’s best team...and the best M edition since ‘97. The painfully low payoff that season was circumstantial/poor luck and could never mean they weren’t elite or that the preseason hype went unmet in terms of skill across the board.
October 22nd, 2020 at 12:52 PM ^
CarrIs,
All true. That OSU game was brutal - better team got robbed.
That said, the disappointment is that we haven't gotten better in talent or execution the past 3 years and OSU seemingly continues to ascend. Also, those were mostly Brady Hoke's upperclassmen.
I know it's not a popular take around here, but I think we are long enough past the Hoke era that it is worth offering him ridiculously high contract to be the D-line coordinator and Defensive coordinator in waiting (doesn't mean he needs to get it), to bring him back. He could identify and develop one position incredibly effectively, and I think he'd recruit us some solid DT's.
October 22nd, 2020 at 1:26 PM ^
Arguably the conference's best team, but they didn't prove it.
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:35 AM ^
You mean 2016/2018 where we won 10 games and beat MSU, Wisconsin and PSU? Yea, I would take that in a heartbeat this year.
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:37 AM ^
If we win 10 games this year, I'd be VERY happy
October 22nd, 2020 at 12:33 PM ^
We were one broken collarbone away from the playoffs in 2016. Speight played the OSU game badly injured and it showed. If he even had a mediocre performance we would have won.
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:18 AM ^
I'd like to see the very first play from scrimmage be a 60 yard pass, just to show that's potentially there on every play!
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:22 AM ^
I’d rather just have joe get on his knees and fire the ball clear out of the stadium. Just because.
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:55 AM ^
Would be worth what would officially go down as a sack.
October 22nd, 2020 at 11:14 AM ^
QB kneels are considered runs, not sacks
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:21 AM ^
The part that excites me about Milton is he has 2-3 more years left. Hopefully he will continue to grow.
October 22nd, 2020 at 11:57 AM ^
I don't know. He'd end up like 7 feet tall...
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:29 AM ^
Part of the frustration with being a fan is the cognitive dissonance one experiences from reading these types of quotes and then seeing within a few quarters of play the reality of the situation. I suspect it’s going to be an up and down year.
October 22nd, 2020 at 10:32 AM ^
My experience as a Michigan fan for the last few decades has taught me that as hype increases, actual results decrease. I find myself in a similar situation as previous years - wanting to believe the hype and get excited, but having the overwhelming memory of so many years of letdown.
Please, Hype, be true this time?
