Jake Rudock Making Case For Backup QB

Submitted by Ishgoblue on
With all the college action going on, I thought the board might appreciate an update on our boy Jake. Lions are taking on the bills in an NFL preseason game. Jake Rudock has passed for 166 yds on 12/20 and 1 TD so far and looks good out there. Dan Orlovsky is 5/10 for 42 yards and 0 TD. Currently third quarter. Go Jake! Go Blue!

He has looked good, but any throw over 20 yards has been overthrown. He's damn good inside 10 yards though and he's making good decisions. Billingsley is the truth. Keep him please, pretty pretty please.

- Backup to mostly-capable franchise quarterback

- General manager pinched from New England Patriots

Basically, if Stafford goes down with an injury in game two, the Lions are destined to become a dynasty.  Suck it, Packers.

He had a season under the quarterback whisperer.  If he makes the team, they need to make a flyer of him sitting on the bench at Iowa with a picture of him in his Lions uniform with "What can Harbaugh do for you?" on it and send to every recruit we are after...

great presence of mind and field awareness. orlovsky is last week's meatloaf, left out since monday.  rudock is the real deal with a very high ceiling.

I've gotta think with this additional good performance, even if the Lions don't retain him, some other team is going to pick him up off the waivers. It's not like he's a ghost out there. Somebody's gonna notice him and give him a shot, even if it isn't the Lions.

4th pre-season game caveats apply, but Rudock is continuing his great play against NFL talent.

The Lions used a pick on him, they would be stupid to cut him or even practice team him.

Detroit keeps 3 QBs and lets Orlovsky walk after this year, and Rudock steps in.

For only being a 1 year guy, I find myself rooting more for Jake than I have a lot of former players.

Here's a kid who was discarded by Iowa where he was a mid level caliber QB.  He came to a team that needed him as much as he needed them and worked his butt of.  He found his master tutor and studied under the great teacher.  He started off rough and turned in one of the great quarter back seasons at Michigan.  It culminated in the bowl blowout.  So for this story to have a happy ending, he needs to make a team.  It's something you'd see in a Hollywood movie...

Rudock just looks locked in. He's commanding the huddle, making good decisions and just making plays left and right. Of course the Lions will cut him and stick with Orlovsky.
