Jake Rudock Making Case For Backup QB

Submitted by Ishgoblue on
With all the college action going on, I thought the board might appreciate an update on our boy Jake. Lions are taking on the bills in an NFL preseason game. Jake Rudock has passed for 166 yds on 12/20 and 1 TD so far and looks good out there. Dan Orlovsky is 5/10 for 42 yards and 0 TD. Currently third quarter. Go Jake! Go Blue!

Jake should be Lions 2. QB is a confidence/feel position. Those are the variables. The constants are what a guy brings with him. Those can be athletic in nature and/or mental. I honestly believe Jake got a Ph.D. Level training program that Orlafsky has never had. Give this kid a shot if you're EVER going to wing it on a guy this is a great shot to pull a Tom Brady level coup out of nowhere.

Not necessarily his decision. Quinn could take just two QBs on the active roster and put Orlovsky on the waiver wire. Remember, Quinn owes nothing to Caldwell. He just gave him a shot this year as a courtesy to Martha.

I feel like not being Dan Orlovsky in of itself is making a great case to be the backup QB. It's even better that he is playing well. But really... what argument is there left to be made for Dan O? You know what will happen if he enters a game: unmitigated disaster. At least there is some potential with Jake.

Rudock will be a starter over Stafford at some point I believe. Give him time to get comfortable with the system. Meanwhile Stafford lost his man Megatron. He will be turning the ball over more. BOOK IT!

Perhaps not starting over... but Im sure the Lions would really like a different direction to head after 2017 when Stafford's current contract expires. He is going to want a mega contract that will be a shit ton of money for the 14th or 15th 'best' QB in the league who is also hitting his 30's.

Problem is you arent finding anyone better, or even really comparable, on the FA market. Drafting a QB in the 1st or 2nd round this coming offseason would also create a whole nother set of problems. At this point it is probably either Rudock or a late round QB next year stepping up. Which likely means Stafford will get ridiculously overpaid for his 30th birthday.

But heres rooting for you, Rudock !

Sean Baligian said it best. Stop comparing the Lions to the Lions.

And how will the franchise know if there's a better option if they don't flippin try?

He's in his 8th season. And he's shown nothing other than he can throw for a lot of yards, which are like wins and losses for a baseball pitcher (relatively meaningless). Look at the real details. His career rating is middle of the pack. TD/INT ratio is not that good. Hasn't won ANYTHING of note. Doesn't make any WRs look better. Team has to constantly draft weapons for the guy.

Stone Huoma today! Kinda sucks as he had been battling for the fullback role and looked like he was going to make it. Hope he catches on

Fuck Hoke for burning his redshirt for a few special team plays all year. Still kills me

Although Rudock struggled on a few downfield throws again, when the Lions asked him to dink and dunk his way down the field, Rudock was extremely efficient. Finishing the day with three touchdowns and no interceptions, Rudock managed to lead the offense on several scoring drives while avoiding any major mistakes. Additionally, Rudock showed some skills with his feet, escaping the pocket at appropriate times and picking up 33 yards on the ground.

Jake Rudock will get released by the Lions and given an opportunity to get picked up elsewhere (I suspect he will).  If he isn't, they'll sign him to QB #3

just stumbled across the Lion's exhibition game vs the Bills again on FSD. Between now and Sunday, it'll be shown 3 more times, one of them on NFL Network. Rudock is going to play for someone in the NFL this season. Reebak it!
