Iowa is opening up Kinnick.

"We have 100 more days (until Iowa kick off) and by then, my guess is we're going to learn a lot between now and then," Barta told local reporters. "My staff (and I) are still planning for several different scenarios and the scenarios we plan for, can change by the day, by the hour, by the week, but as of today, we are still planning to open Kinnick up and have as many fans that want to join us, join us."

American children under the age of 18 who died from coronavirus: 9 (6 with underlying conditions)

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-age-sex-demographics/

American children deaths for car crashes in 2016: 4074.  This is yearly, so lets divide by four so it will represent March, April, and May coronavirus statistics: 1018 per 3 months.

https://www.usnews.com/news/health-news/articles/2018-12-19/car-crashes-guns-killed-the-most-us-children-and-teens-in-2016

Looks like kids are roughly 100 times more likely to die in a car crash.

What is it about people who, since the lockdown, have zero fucking sense of humor and lost all ability to detect or appreciate sarcasm?

Just look at this number (and type) of comments in this thread, or any other covid thread.  People just want to come on here and bitch and argue and piss an moan about covid.

Someone makes a funny joke, and gets shit on by a bunch of people I can only assume dont have the mental fortitude to handle the lockdown and cone out on the other side a normal, functional, happy adult. Happened to XM the other day and his joke wasn’t half as messed up as this one.

I mean, yea, you can dislike a joke all you want.  In my opinion, I don’t think there are any subjects “off limits” for humor because if you can laugh at a joke poking fun of one group of people, but not another, you’re just a hypocrite.

That aside, all the holier than thou, super-serious responses that pop up in reply to every little fucking joke made on this blog is really fucking sad.  I come here for sports news, entertainment, and friendly banter.  But this blog has deteriorated into a whiny political bitchfest.  People’s sense of humor is broken and everyone is just tearing their clothes and gnashing their teeth.

There’s way too many people can’t hack it .... and it’s only been 2 months!!  The message board is really starting to suck balls at a level I never thought it could get to.

Most important question in all of this: When does Michigan have to go back to Kinnick?

Checks watch....not until the 2022 season.

Would put it off until 2032 if I could.

I think I'd rather go play a White Out game at Penn State than face a night game at Kinnick. That stadium just finds a way to mess with everyone's mojo.

How many top-10 opponents has Iowa beaten there, or taken to the absolute brink, just in the last 4-5 years alone? They beat a #3 Michigan team in 2016, curbstomped a #6 OSU team in 2017, lost on the last play to a #4 PSU team just a few weeks prior, and beat a #8 Minnesota team in 2019.

Iowa probably has one of the best records in the country, over that span of time, against ranked opponents at home. Kinnick is where dreams go to die.

The ignorance, willful or otherwise, of the dynamics in play here remain quite remarkable. That we are five months into this matter and have pretty much learned nothing defines who we are as a nation quite well. If we were not so defiantly braindead and employed a little discipline and some simple matters of protection for ourselves and our fellowmen significant "normalcy" could be had quite safely...sadly, this is not us.

do tell...the states in forced lockdown are seeing similar patterns to those with more open and robust approaches. It's a virus, now many claiming COULD be endemic like say HIV/AIDS, etc...so when exactly do we decide to open up? Fauci can't even find his AIDS vaccine...if we are waiting on him just end it all now.

You're missing the point, Blue.

Politicians have said we are going to tank the economy to save lives.  If that's not true, and we actually didn't save lives but only tanked the economy, then we need to give them enough time to change the discussion/move the goalposts lol

ahhh yes, thanks for the clarity. Hey is this a Presidential election year too? I'd upvote but I lost that privilege being bombed into oblivion for statements that now mirror about half the country.

Increasing “cases” is a meaningless statistic, at best, and without further context, the way it’s being reported popularly is outright dishonest and fraudulent.  How many test were administered as compared to previous days and months?  What test?  What demographics were tested?  How many cycles were needed to attain that “positive” test result?  The latter question really being where the rubber meets the road with regard to policy decisions and directions.

The table entitled “How is my state doing on testing” gets at some of what you are asking.   If your number of tests is increasing and at the same time your percentage of positive tests is increasing, that is not a good sign.   If your percentage of positive tests is increasing while your number of tests is decreasing, it is less clear (but clear that you should be doing more testing).

Good point. I don't think increasing cases is a "meaningless statistic". Why are cases still going up at this point? It's almost June and most of the country has been locked down or social distancing since mid-early March. Even with increased testing, the numbers should be trending downwards like they are in NY. My theory is that the states that were slow to close and/or quick to re-open are driving the nationwide increases.

NY has seen a major decrease which seems to directly correlate with the shutdowns. Iowa, on the other hand, where I live, never issued a stay-at-home order and until last week you could only get a test if you were pre-approved by a doctor. New cases in Iowa have been rising steadily since this began and its likely not a result of increased testing: last I checked Iowa ranked #33 in testing. Covid is creeping into the rural areas and TWO MORE (!) meat packing plants reported hundreds of new cases this week.

Barring legal requirements not to open up, any place with a monetary incentive to open up will open up. Folks making such decisions are led by economics, not epidemiology. The difference between America and other countries is that in Europe and Asia people feel that it's this type of situation where the state and its health authorities must take the lead and act in a controlling fashion because otherwise other interests will take the lead which are heavily incentivized to prioritize commerce over health. In the United States, people are more suspicious of a controlling state than of businesses promoting their goods. That's often not a bad thing, but it presents significant challenges when natural disasters come into play as businesses aren't equipped to evaluate them or to make decisions in the long-term best interest of the public beyond their own bottom line.

My take is that unfortunately many more people will die given we cannot come together on a sensible approach in this country due to Covid-19 somehow becoming a partisan issue.  Once many more die, it will become less partisan.

Really hope I am wrong in respect of the amount of upcoming deaths.

No one really knows how bad or not bad this thing is.  We know it is significantly worse than the flu, but by how much?  Does China, who cares very little about its citizens vis a vis the economy, really lockdown 400m+ if it doesn't have to?   How about the rest of the World--almost all more stringent approaches than we have taken here.  Understood Sweden is the outlier, but my understanding from looking at traffic data, etc., is that they have "locked down" just as much as we have--their citizens collectively distanced themselves without government coercion to the same extent we have been able to do so here with government coercion along with the rights we have to peacefully assemble.

Also, I would like to add that, unfortunately, citing the CDC should be taken with a grain of salt.  It's a federal agency, so Trump has significant influence.  Regardless of your politics, the point is that the CDC cannot be viewed as independent thought on this issue.  I do not think many Americans are aware of this.

I’d say it about Robert Redfield, an underqualified political appointee who is head of the CDC, and yes, I’d certainly say it to his face. He’s head of the agency that screwed up the testing kits, and is a Trump appointee. I’d also ask him why the CDC has/had periodically stopped reporting data on its website about daily testing, especially when that data has reflected poorly on the lack of testing being done in the US (back in March, specifically).

I’d also say some things to Deborah Birx, who seems to think her job is to serve as a cheerleader. In television appearances, she’s tried to justify Trump’s comments about injecting disinfectant into the human body.

Why would anyone be afraid to tell a public servant they’re not doing their job well enough? They literally work for us, the taxpayers.

CDC was also reporting results of antibody and covid testing together, which makes absolutely no sense but does serve to make it look like positive results are low (if the assumption is that the tests are just for covid but then you add antibody testing which will necessarily be lower at this point in the pandemic).

https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/05/cdc-and-states-are-misreporting-covid-19-test-data-pennsylvania-georgia-texas/611935/

The CDC has failed miserably during this pandemic and it falls on the administration which has appointed it's leadership and ultimately controls every aspect of it.

Here is an example for you:

“The Trump administration with no advance notice removed warnings contained in guidance for the reopening of houses of worship that singing in choirs can spread the coronavirus. Last Friday, the administration released pandemic guidance for faith communities after weeks of debate flared between the White House and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those guidelines posted on the CDC website included recommendations that religious communities “consider suspending or at least decreasing use of choir/musical ensembles and congregant singing, chanting, or reciting during services or other programming, if appropriate within the faith tradition.” (Sun and Dawsey, 5/28)”

You don't think job security has an impact on one's "independence" even if they were independent at some time in their lives?

The administration has shown a troubling tendency to fire inspectors general that don't fall in line with their agenda. And note the publisher (Fox News) and source of concern (R - Grassley): https://www.foxnews.com/politics/grassley-says-white-house-failed-to-explain-why-igs-were-fired

The administration has re-assigned other people in public health that didn't fall in line with their agenda: https://www.statnews.com/2020/05/05/vaccine-expert-says-he-was-punished-for-raising-concerns-about-trumps-coronavirus-response-nepotism/

They fired Jeff Sessions and continue bashing him for trying to maintain just an appearance of independence.

This administration doesn't promote independence, they punish it. If you don't think that restricts independent thought amongst people who otherwise would have been independent, I don't know what to tell you.

We don't even need to wear masks anymore!

When and how to wear medical masks to protect against coronavirus?

  • If you are healthy, you only need to wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with COVID-19.
  • Wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing.

Good old WHO comes to the rescue: https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public/when-and-how-to-use-masks

There's so much bullshit around this.

How to do this is to have the state health dept. officials draw up a plan for opening the stadium. Set guidelines, take precautions, and do it.

They don't do it for political reasons, they do it to get clicks and shares. So they play to the political leanings of their readers / viewers (which then just draws more like-minded readers and puts the whole publication in a bubble) and tell them what they want to hear, even if it means lying, dramatizing and exploiting issues.

We get the news we deserve because we like being told what we want to hear more than we care about the truth and certainly more than we care about other viewpoints.
