Iowa's Top Target for OC is Brian Hartline

Submitted by SFBayAreaBlue on November 1st, 2023 at 8:16 AM

According to sources familiar with the situation, Iowa's OC Brian Ferentz will be stepping down and seeking different employment following this season.

Kirk Ferentz was non-committal when asked whether or not he too would leave Iowa after this season. Assuming that he's gone, that means Iowa will be looking for a new Head Coach that has Big Ten experience and comes from the offensive side of the ball.

Brian Hartline is the obvious top candidate there.

But OSU doesn't want to lose Hartline and his top tier recruiting results.  So there is a growing faction in the OSU AD who quietly want to push out Ryan Day because of the embarrassment he has brought to the school.

Day has been feeling the pressure of not being able to beat Michigan and is on the Hot Seat despite otherwise stellar results and high rankings.  He feels like he can't beat physically tough teams, and his best will still not be good enough for the spoiled Buckeye fans.  This is what led to his outburst following the Notre Dame game.

And now that the Raiders job has opened up, Ryan Day can go there and be in complete control as a coach/GM.  Sources said that the timing of the Raiders job opening up and Harbaugh about to sign a lifelong contract at Michigan means that Day could announce his leaving for the NFL before the game in Ann Arbor. Or if he loses the game, he might be "fired" the following Monday.  But of course it will look like a mutual parting.

I'm hearing from several people that if Day loses the game and an entire recruiting class doesn't get a single pair of gold pants that Day will be gone before the bowl season, even if OSU backdoors its way to a playoff spot.  Nothing would be more embarrassing to Buckeye nation than losing to the Wolverines twice in one year and 4 times in 3 years.

Hartline to Iowa makes no sense from a lateral perspective, and historically has not been the case for OSU coordinators who have went on to become HCs.

OSU losing to UM isn't enough to fire Day.  He has a great record.  Now, if Day loses to Rutgers this Saturday AND Michigan, then we have something brewing.

With the playoffs system changing to a 12 team format next year, all bets are off.  With teams leaning into revenue sharing with players, a decent coach like Day or whoever should be able to consistently make the playoffs.

I have a feeling there was some snark in the OP, but I don't understand the MGoBoard's continued assertion that losing to UM isn't enough to fire Ryan Day.  Should it be enough? No.  Is the fan base crazy enough to demand it?  Absolutely.  Will it matter?  I have no idea, but to dismiss it based on rational, logical thinking is a giving the OSU faction too much credit.

Last year, OSU peaked as the greatest version of Texas Tech ever seen on the field.  They blew out bad teams and had an explosive offense.  This year they are...what?  There is real, clear decline here despite the "big" wins - won on ND's collapse in the last 3 mins and Frames Janklin with Frames Janklin game plans.  They can't run the ball.  Their short yardage conversion rate is atrocious.  Marvin Harrison Jr is like 50% of their passing game.  The only reason they haven't lost 2 games is their defense stopped giving up big plays constantly due to lower levels of aggression.  I am very excited to see an OSU defense keeping safeties back to prevent big plays and playing with 6.5-7 guys in the box, because we already saw that game in 2021.

Yeah. Honestly OSU is beginning to remind me of those late Carr-era UM teams that were consistently very good but never quite good enough to beat the truly elite opponents. The Big Ten was a tougher league back then, so those Carr teams would usually go like 10-3 whereas Day has been going 11-1. It’s a very good record, but deep down inside you know the team isn’t championship caliber. That’s a tough reality for OSU to swallow when they think about where their team was just a few years ago.

The way they’ve been scraping by, “Maserati Marv” has bailed them out of at least 3 games this year already, so they’re one alien receiver away from being that team. Lose to Michigan a third year in a row, those generational talents might start taking a look elsewhere… I don’t think it’s out of line for Day to start getting jumpy.

Way, way off.   If the Buckeyes don’t win an A2 this year, Day will be “encouraged to join the Vega$ staff” before they leave the locker room in Michigan Stadium…

Problem is, SF, that many of us do enjoy parodies when they're funny and/or present themselves as parodies right off that bat. You essentially click-baited the board with your title to reading what you thought was good humor and sprung a "Gotcha" at the end. Hilarious.

If you really wanted to bring to light the ridiculous nature of the recent "source" reporting, you should have led off with Keith Jackson reports... that way we know we this is a parody as you inferred.

But didn't see you the /s? That means OPs can post insane-ass shit like this as long as they make it joke to some degree. Not to mention the title implies that this is actually true and probably provides a link or two.

We could really use a MGoFactChecker that just deletes stupid posts like this that serves only the OP's purpose of propagating the previously mentioned insane-ass shit.

It's not juuuuust parody, it's also biting criticism of the state of sports journalism and it's a psy-ops attack against our enemies, getting out ahead of and diffusing any Harbaugh to Raiders BS stories that are bound to come out of Columbus this week.

I explain all of this on page 348 of my manifesto.

This post perfectly captures the modern world of social media wrapped (warped?) "journalism".  For anyone (like me) who took the bait, it's time for a little introspection on what we read, what we believe, and where our skeptical filter might have been put into storage.  Well done OP!!!

With one more loss to Michigan this year's incoming HS Freshmen would have been in grade school the last time they might have seen the Buckeyes win.
