Iowa's low expectation contract amendment for OC Brian Ferentz

Submitted by Ezekiels Creatures on February 6th, 2023 at 7:30 PM

Firstly, there's a pay cut of $50,000.00:

And here's the expectations:

How do these expectations compare to what other teams are doing?

There's a lot I could post about Iowa fan reaction to Brian Ferentz. But I'll just post these 2 tweets. If you want to see what fans are saying, look it up. You'll find big lots! Just know that sharp objects need to be kept away from them.

Oh

A small paycut

some stat incentives

I’m sure that’s exactly the sort of change in offensive philosophy that Cade and All had in mind when they transferred

look out B1G west

Had to check. It is no improvement on wins, playing the pathetic B10W. And the west will be pathetic this year.

It is an increase from 17.7 PPG to 25.  But 25 PPG, playing everyone in the West, and USU/ISU/WMU non-con is doubly sad.

Note- MB law requires TLAs today.
Note 2- I know they are actually initialisms and not acronyms.

From a gambling perspective, it certainly needs to be considered for the USU and WMU games.  Ferentz obviously wants to keep his son employed and hit these objectives for him.  Iowa may run it up on worse teams to help the average.  Instead of a mere safety, you may actually see an impetus for a FG on the subsequent drive.

The “average at least 25 ppg” objective doesn’t even specify they have to be scored by the offense. Brian is going to skate by because Iowa’s D/ST is going to average like 7 ppg as usual. Insane the lengths Iowa AD is going to protect the Ferentz family.

Ferentz has clearly entered the 'this is my program and I can do whatever I want' phase with the Iowa AD. Can't imagine how infuriating it must be for Iowa fans to have good teams ruined because Kirk wants to hand his kid a cushy job he's in no way qualified for

Like imagine if Jim made Jay the DC and we were like a 120+ defense and Jim and the AD wouldn't do anything about it. We'd be absolutely losing our minds

He was obviously keeping some great offensive ideas in the can just waiting to be incentivized.

This year's master plan: Punt on third down. Get that defense back out there.

For Ferentz's sake, I hope they didn't specify offensive points per game in there...

According to cfbstats.com Iowa scored 230 points for the 2022-2023 season.

36 of those points were scored by defensive TDs, another 4 scored via safety.
The offense averaged just over 14 points per game.

and in the most "Big Ten!!" thing ever, Iowa wasn't even last in the conference in total points. Not even second to last.
Rutgers and Northwestern both scored less than Iowa (though I didn't dig in to see if they had help from their defense or not)

Total points is the wrong stat because even though Iowa's offense was a stinky turd, they made a bowl game and played 13 games. NW and Rutger are indeed lower in PPG, but it's much closer. Iowa averaged 17.7 PPG vs. Rutgers at 17.4 -- I haven't done the math, but I'm guessing Rutger had fewer D/ST points and thus did have a more potent offense.

This is going to be fun to watch. They don't play Michigan or Ohio State, so maybe they can average 25 if they score 150 versus Utah State, Western Michigan, and Rutgers. No pressure, Cade!

If Iowa averages 25 ppg with that defense they'll go at least 10-2 and probably challenge for the Big 10 West title.  That's how little they have to improve as a team offensively to become one of the better squads in that division.

I still think about their 46-10 loss to aOSU where their offense scored less than their own defense, OSU's offense AND defense.  Like, they were so inept that game that you didn't really fault Iowa's defense for allowing 4-5 TDs after they put in yeoman's work to hold OSU to field goals after five or six Iowa turnovers on their side of the field

I understand that rivalries between offenses and defenses are normal in football, but I genuinely am surprised it hasn't turned toxic for Iowa.  That's one of the most egregious examples of one unit totally screwing over another unit, every single game, that I can personally remember.

Iowa's defense paired a perfectly average P5 offense would have been an 11/12 win team the last couple years.  It's absolutely criminal how they've wasted some of the best defensive play in CFB.

Imagine for a second that someone offered you $850k to be an OC and if you managed 25 points in a game on average IN THE BIG TEN WEST you would be considered proficient…..don’t you think you could do it? Yeah I think you could too. And I don’t even know you. But you know who can’t do that? Brian 14 PPG Ferentz.

Wow, 25 points!?! Tory Taylor’s going to have his work cut out for him!

Serious question though, is it even somewhat normal to have an annual bonus set in for a PPG mark? Isn’t the whole point of an offensive coordinator to orchestrate offensive scoring?

Recapping the tweets - (made me chuckle, just like "punting is winning")

Brian hates his father or else he would have resigned.

That point total is mean and way too high for them to reach.

That goal puts them on par with Arkansas St.
