Iowa's low expectation contract amendment for OC Brian Ferentz
Firstly, there's a pay cut of $50,000.00:
And here's the expectations:
How do these expectations compare to what other teams are doing?
There's a lot I could post about Iowa fan reaction to Brian Ferentz. But I'll just post these 2 tweets. If you want to see what fans are saying, look it up. You'll find big lots! Just know that sharp objects need to be kept away from them.

Oh
A small paycut
some stat incentives
I’m sure that’s exactly the sort of change in offensive philosophy that Cade and All had in mind when they transferred
look out B1G west

Who says this country isn't a meritocracy?
February 7th, 2023 at 9:09 AM ^
Well Iowa DEFINITELY is, ain't that right Gary!
February 7th, 2023 at 10:03 AM ^
What's the term? Nepobaby?
(Thank God Jay Harbaugh is a good coach/recruiter.)
February 6th, 2023 at 10:08 PM ^
Had to check. It is no improvement on wins, playing the pathetic B10W. And the west will be pathetic this year.
It is an increase from 17.7 PPG to 25. But 25 PPG, playing everyone in the West, and USU/ISU/WMU non-con is doubly sad.
Note- MB law requires TLAs today.
Note 2- I know they are actually initialisms and not acronyms.
February 7th, 2023 at 12:10 PM ^
From a gambling perspective, it certainly needs to be considered for the USU and WMU games. Ferentz obviously wants to keep his son employed and hit these objectives for him. Iowa may run it up on worse teams to help the average. Instead of a mere safety, you may actually see an impetus for a FG on the subsequent drive.
February 7th, 2023 at 7:31 PM ^
You just know this is going to be a hilarious line of interest in Vegas all year long, especially if it gets to be late-season and iffy for Brian. . .
February 6th, 2023 at 7:38 PM ^
The “average at least 25 ppg” objective doesn’t even specify they have to be scored by the offense. Brian is going to skate by because Iowa’s D/ST is going to average like 7 ppg as usual. Insane the lengths Iowa AD is going to protect the Ferentz family.
February 6th, 2023 at 7:52 PM ^
Even if the D averages 7 pts per game that means the offense is still responsible for ~3 TDs a game which honestly does not seem doable by that offense under baby Ferentz
February 6th, 2023 at 9:18 PM ^
But that assumes they miss all their PATs, and we know they're pretty good at kicking their own balls.
February 7th, 2023 at 8:20 AM ^
They will do that with Mcnamara and All IMO. The defense combined with 2 pretty damn good Michigan players at key positions = a lock. Sad because he sucks and will look better than what he is.
February 7th, 2023 at 10:15 AM ^
Ferentz has clearly entered the 'this is my program and I can do whatever I want' phase with the Iowa AD. Can't imagine how infuriating it must be for Iowa fans to have good teams ruined because Kirk wants to hand his kid a cushy job he's in no way qualified for
Like imagine if Jim made Jay the DC and we were like a 120+ defense and Jim and the AD wouldn't do anything about it. We'd be absolutely losing our minds
February 7th, 2023 at 10:30 AM ^
I was going to ask if there's fine print stipulating where those 25 points have to come from. If the defense gets 3 pick-6s and a safety, the offense only has to account for a single FG and they're golden.
February 6th, 2023 at 7:38 PM ^
25 points?
Brian Ferentz furiously doing math to calculate how many field goals that would take...
February 6th, 2023 at 8:00 PM ^
per game??
i bet he thought, 'per season' and said to himself, 'easy money!!'
February 6th, 2023 at 8:20 PM ^
Poor guy. Probably won't sleep a wink when he realizes his mistake.
February 7th, 2023 at 8:03 AM ^
He could just watch his own offense if he needs to catch some sleep.
February 6th, 2023 at 8:17 PM ^
Pfft, at 1.5 point per punt, take the over.
February 7th, 2023 at 11:09 AM ^
Iowa football needs the rouge.
February 7th, 2023 at 7:14 AM ^
Nah. Fake punts every time, all the time, no matter what the score and who the opponent.
February 6th, 2023 at 7:40 PM ^
He was obviously keeping some great offensive ideas in the can just waiting to be incentivized.
This year's master plan: Punt on third down. Get that defense back out there.
February 6th, 2023 at 7:41 PM ^
Can’t cry QB problems with Cade! Better open it up a bit!
February 6th, 2023 at 7:44 PM ^
His dad took his sucker and will give it back when he's a good boy. Cutthroat operation over there in Iowa.
February 6th, 2023 at 9:25 PM ^
Iowa has somewhat taken his contract out of his dad's hands. Their nepotism rules lead to someone in the AD handling Brian's contract. Otherwise, he'd be getting a raise.
February 6th, 2023 at 9:33 PM ^
What a "nepo baby"
February 7th, 2023 at 9:32 AM ^
I'd be pissed if I was a taxpayer in Iowa. They're paying someone $850k to suck at his job. This level of nepotism might even be illegal.
February 6th, 2023 at 11:18 PM ^
But isn't that the AD who plays hardball with everyone but softball with Kirk?
February 6th, 2023 at 7:46 PM ^
They don't even play Michigan or OSU, talk about setting the bar low.
February 6th, 2023 at 7:58 PM ^
For Ferentz's sake, I hope they didn't specify offensive points per game in there...
According to cfbstats.com Iowa scored 230 points for the 2022-2023 season.
36 of those points were scored by defensive TDs, another 4 scored via safety.
The offense averaged just over 14 points per game.
http://www.cfbstats.com/2022/team/312/scoring/index.html
and in the most "Big Ten!!" thing ever, Iowa wasn't even last in the conference in total points. Not even second to last.
Rutgers and Northwestern both scored less than Iowa (though I didn't dig in to see if they had help from their defense or not)
February 6th, 2023 at 11:29 PM ^
Total points is the wrong stat because even though Iowa's offense was a stinky turd, they made a bowl game and played 13 games. NW and Rutger are indeed lower in PPG, but it's much closer. Iowa averaged 17.7 PPG vs. Rutgers at 17.4 -- I haven't done the math, but I'm guessing Rutger had fewer D/ST points and thus did have a more potent offense.
February 6th, 2023 at 7:58 PM ^
This is going to be fun to watch. They don't play Michigan or Ohio State, so maybe they can average 25 if they score 150 versus Utah State, Western Michigan, and Rutgers. No pressure, Cade!
February 6th, 2023 at 8:04 PM ^
Now that's how you link and embed people!
February 7th, 2023 at 4:46 AM ^
"Link and embed people?"
Is it just me, or does anybody else think this sounds like a weird sex thing?
Nobody? Just me? OK, never mind.
February 6th, 2023 at 8:17 PM ^
If Iowa averages 25 ppg with that defense they'll go at least 10-2 and probably challenge for the Big 10 West title. That's how little they have to improve as a team offensively to become one of the better squads in that division.
February 6th, 2023 at 8:38 PM ^
February 6th, 2023 at 8:45 PM ^
I still think about their 46-10 loss to aOSU where their offense scored less than their own defense, OSU's offense AND defense. Like, they were so inept that game that you didn't really fault Iowa's defense for allowing 4-5 TDs after they put in yeoman's work to hold OSU to field goals after five or six Iowa turnovers on their side of the field
February 7th, 2023 at 11:16 AM ^
I understand that rivalries between offenses and defenses are normal in football, but I genuinely am surprised it hasn't turned toxic for Iowa. That's one of the most egregious examples of one unit totally screwing over another unit, every single game, that I can personally remember.
Iowa's defense paired a perfectly average P5 offense would have been an 11/12 win team the last couple years. It's absolutely criminal how they've wasted some of the best defensive play in CFB.
February 6th, 2023 at 9:14 PM ^
Imagine for a second that someone offered you $850k to be an OC and if you managed 25 points in a game on average IN THE BIG TEN WEST you would be considered proficient…..don’t you think you could do it? Yeah I think you could too. And I don’t even know you. But you know who can’t do that? Brian 14 PPG Ferentz.
February 7th, 2023 at 7:47 AM ^
I bet 14 PPG is his vanity plate.
February 7th, 2023 at 9:13 AM ^
How about....KIRKSON
February 7th, 2023 at 5:46 PM ^
Not “FGFRNTZ”?
February 21st, 2023 at 7:06 PM ^
GO BLUE!!!!
February 6th, 2023 at 9:17 PM ^
$850K / year… after his reduction? Hmmm… it’s fair to say “pay for performance”,has no meaning whatsoever…
February 6th, 2023 at 9:22 PM ^
Wow, 25 points!?! Tory Taylor’s going to have his work cut out for him!
Serious question though, is it even somewhat normal to have an annual bonus set in for a PPG mark? Isn’t the whole point of an offensive coordinator to orchestrate offensive scoring?
February 6th, 2023 at 9:22 PM ^
Recapping the tweets - (made me chuckle, just like "punting is winning")
Brian hates his father or else he would have resigned.
That point total is mean and way too high for them to reach.
That goal puts them on par with Arkansas St.
February 6th, 2023 at 10:33 PM ^
Would you resign from your job that sucked at that paid over $800k a year? What does it have to do with his father? sign me up for his gig
February 6th, 2023 at 9:34 PM ^
I trust that someday the dirt which the Ferentz family has on the AD/Administration will come out in an expose that will make sense of all this.
February 7th, 2023 at 8:21 AM ^
AD's wife must have had an Only Fans account.
February 7th, 2023 at 9:15 AM ^
In that case I am sure this guy is a fan of hers....
Didn't he also say that he will only work for AD's with hot wives?
