This is a bad take and is commonly repeated on here.

Izzo is whiny, annoying, and complains to the refs more then any other coach. Clearly it works because he regularly gets calls to go his way (kudos to Dakich for being the only commentator to call him out on his whining).

However, his players like playing for him.

You think every player that plays for him is somehow tricked into staying longer than they should? The only player I can think of that hurt his draft stock by staying another year is Miles Bridges, and yet he still went in the lottery.

I disagree - I think this is a bad rebuttle to a common take - I think its more of this:

"Stockholm syndrome is a condition which causes hostages to develop a psychological alliance with their captors as a survival strategy during captivity. These alliances result from a bond formed between captor and captives during intimate time together, but they are generally considered irrational in light of the danger or risk endured by the victims. I agree he doesn't trick guys, but it's hard to imagine that he's somehow cracked the code of recruiting highly-rated guys who inexplicably want to turn down millions of dollars for another year of college life.  He may just be that compelling, but when you've got former players like Gary Harris saying that Tom Izzo screaming and lunging at Aaron Henry isn't a problem, only society is getting soft, it does make one wonder.  Maybe it's as simple that people like playing for an asshole; loud guys who act macho and are kinda slimy have a track record of being successful if people don't dig too deep.

Interesting charts in the article. If you consider recruit ranking similar to draft ranking (caveats about team needs aside) almost everyone of Beilein's players get drafted much higher than their recruiting ranking whereas Izzo's players are either drafted at or worse than their recruiting ranking.

This isn't a surprise as Beilein's excellent player development and Izzo's, uh....not excellent player development are discussed commonly here. However, this was an interesting way of charting the difference.

Izzo is for players who want to major in rape and rape cover up and regress in development, skills, and pro opportunities. Beilein is for players who want to grow into men and be developed beyond their recruiting to be catapulted into the pros far beyond where their potential was before going through Beilein's system.

As already posted Izzo does not care at all about the well being or development of his players and uses them selfishly to better himself.  No thought ever given to his players' best interest other than covering up their rapes.

Ah - have a look around. I noticed after I joined that its common knowledge on this board that Izzo is complicit in covering up rape - look at any thread where he is discussed.  I questioned it at first but now I just go with the rest of the board. If posting that Izzo covers up rape was a bannable offense, then 1/2 this board would have been nuked.

I've always thought there was a reason why our guys weren't ranked that highly in recruiting, and when they leave super early, there's a reason they're not flourishing.

Our guys are not as naturally gifted as the guys that go to the blue bloods, which means they have to work extra hard to be as good as them. Beilein runs a system though that showcases the guys in pro systems really well, and I think that makes them go more highly than they're really worth.

I don't fault them for leaving at all, but I feel like they really could benefit from developing their skills more considering they're not as good as those blue chip guys.

That's just me though. Rip me if you want, but there are enough Beilein guys in the NBA who went highly and were/are below average NBA guys for me to start seeing some trends

Beilein is a supreme talent developer and (maybe even moreso) talent evaluator. He is excellent at finding guys with NBA potential who aren't the top recruits. But there's a reason why they're not as highly ranked as those other guys

For Izzo, a smart decision is to leave when you’re physically and mentally ready for the NBA to maximize the time you’ll spend in the league. His focus, he has said often, is for players to perform well enough during their rookie contracts to earn the much more lucrative second contract -- as opposed to washing out of the league in a few years after getting bad advice and leaving too early.

Any data on this?  I can't think of many Izzo guys during Beilein's tenure who have signed a 2nd contract or stuck around other than Draymond.

Gary Harris I think did. Other than that though, a lot of his dudes have flamed out.

And just by projecting right now, Levert will get a second contract and so will Jaren Jackson.

Too early to tell for other guys though like Moe, DJ, and Bridges

Sorry, I thought Hardaway was implied.

Michigan: Hardaway, Levert (probable)

MSU: Green, Harris, Jackson (probable)

Stauskas, GRIII, and Burke will not get (or have not received) those big second contracts, which I think is what the subject is. They're all still making enormous sums of money for the average person, but in terms of the NBA their contracts are small. Hardaway and Garry Harris got big contracts

Izzo is looking out for Izzo. Never seen so many 1st round picks and highly rated recruits either return to school for an extra year or fail to develop like at MSU.
