I heard from my friend on the team this weekend.
He said: "I'm concerned about the defense. Our 2nd offense really tore them up last week."
He also said DG was running the 2nd offense& is looking really good. He doesn't think DG will red shirt& might start by the end of the year.
Glass 1/2 full: our offense is really good& deep. Glass 1/2 empty our defense could be really bad.
Sorry, I can't/won't reveal my source on the team. It's a slow day on the board. I thought some here would want this info. Go Blue!

I've heard rumors about a new product called dry water -- all you have to do is add water.
Could do wonders for us on those late August/early September games.

Yay, more shootout games!

42-38 type games can get old really fast. But if we're the team scoring 42, I'll gladly live with it.
August 29th, 2010 at 12:41 PM ^
Sounds familiar. The defense is going to need the crowd's help more than ever this year. We gotta be loud guys.
August 29th, 2010 at 1:31 PM ^
Does this mean we should stand at our seats?

Maybe our offense is just that good... 3 teams deep.
August 29th, 2010 at 12:44 PM ^
I heard from my friend on the team that Teric Jones is lighting it up at running back and might see some playing time...like everyone else at that position.
August 29th, 2010 at 3:57 PM ^
Didn't he move back to corner?
August 29th, 2010 at 4:29 PM ^
That's what made the news surprising to me.
August 29th, 2010 at 12:44 PM ^
While that is definitely concerning, at the spring game at least there seemed to be somewhat of a defensive improvement. The 2009 Cone and Kennedy led offenses shredded all they opposed in last year's spring game. There were some stops at least this year.
August 29th, 2010 at 12:46 PM ^
because DG is with the third team and it's doubtful he'll get meaningful playing time this year, never mind starting
August 29th, 2010 at 2:37 PM ^
According to FormerWolve, DG is running with the 2s.
August 29th, 2010 at 2:47 PM ^
In that thread though, someone mentioned it was probably more like a challenge/message to Forcier. I can't imagine he'll be running with the 3's this week (week before opening game. I hope DG red shirts.... I hope DG redshirts...
If he can replace Tate on the depth chart, then that will probably be a good thing (from a competition perspective). RR has said Tate's been called out for not giving it all off the field, not on the field. So, using my maize and blue jump to conclusion glasses, it appears to me that would indicate DG is the real deal.
August 29th, 2010 at 4:12 PM ^
About Gardner; Basically there were some recruits visiting the practice facility when some players (including DG) were doing drills, some of the kids had saggy pants and Gardner told them to "pull your pants up, we don't do that around here". He was instantly my hero.
August 29th, 2010 at 10:14 PM ^
...agrees with Devin.
jalenrose Sagging pants is played out...And if we can see your underwear...then that is really ridiculous. (Its 2010)
August 29th, 2010 at 12:47 PM ^
Are they sitting some starters on D, the first team defense minus Mike Martin and Floyd and Roh is probably not going to be as good.
August 29th, 2010 at 12:53 PM ^
I have a friend on the team and he said Denard is really fast. Take it for what it's worth.

Not sure how our defense does against our offense is a big worry. Most teams we face this year will not run a spread. I would be more concerned how they are doing against the UConn scout team.
August 29th, 2010 at 1:09 PM ^
August 29th, 2010 at 1:38 PM ^
...just maybe, our 2nd offense had a really good outing and is good enough to start in other programs.
August 29th, 2010 at 2:41 PM ^
Our 2nd team offense should be pretty good, but it's still not good that they're tearing up our D.
August 29th, 2010 at 2:10 PM ^
This is very telling....

...if they want to keep RichRod as their coach. If not, the D will lay down as they have the last two seasons. Yahoo sports did a lil clip on coaches on the hot seat and of course, RR was the first to be talked about. Interesting thing is that if RR is to be replaced, two names came up...Harbaugh and U Conn's coach.
August 29th, 2010 at 2:38 PM ^
Why would we take Randy Edsall as a coach if RR were to be fired?
August 29th, 2010 at 4:10 PM ^
...is because he's turned U CONN around. I am just reporting what I heard. Here's the video link so you can see for yourself.

also said the game Ohio State and Mich. will be in Ann Arbor...... Consider your source.
And get this Eddie George said RR had to win 8 games umm where did he get that number from Dave Brandon??? National Sports venues and media outlets listen to each ohter and repeat what they hear. when I heard those two things and Jimmy Hairball and Les Miles mentioned they quickly lost all credibility with me.

Glass 1/2 empty our defense could be really bad.
I think a lot of folks here have long underestimated the impact BG, DW, and SB had on the defense last year when evaluating this year's defense. Their loss is huge. And while the defense finally has a second year under the same coordinator, they still do not have a second year in the same system. Overall, while the quasi-continuity helps, I see the loss of the guys mentioned above, and the loss of Woolfolk, as a net negative for the defense this year as compared to last year's. So, yeah, like Brian says, panic.
August 29th, 2010 at 3:18 PM ^
I thought the system was the same, just terminology has changed, and the schemes should be easier to run (e.g. fewer decisions need to be made.)
August 29th, 2010 at 3:32 PM ^
Yeah, I think you are right. But then that leads me to wonder what those types of changes mean - teams run complex defensive schemes for a reason, right? I know running simple schemes well is better than running complex schemes poorly, but it is still worrying.
Perhaps Ross Ashby's Law of Requisite Variety tells us something about how defenses relate to offenses, and the problem of simplification:
The larger the variety of actions available to a control system, the larger the variety of perturbations it is able to compensate.*
In other words, the more wrinkles in offensive schemes or the more offensive improvisation our defense faces, the worse our simplified defense will do, even if they execute well.
August 29th, 2010 at 5:05 PM ^
the asterisk...uh, maybe...
August 29th, 2010 at 2:41 PM ^
I don't think it's any kind of secret that our defense may very well suck. In the end we still have a walk-on likely starting at S along with some underclassman, probably even true freshman, along with him in the secondary. I don't quite know what to think of Moundros moving so high on the LB depth chart, my suspicion is that it isn't good either. I totally think we will have one of the best offenses in the big ten this year, and that is what is going to win us games. My hope for the defense at this point is that they can be good against run teams just because our D-line will be good, and that the secondary can just hold on. In my dreams I hope that our freshman turn out to be some sort of super freaks that rule the backfield. This season will be fun to watch, that's for sure.
August 29th, 2010 at 2:42 PM ^
Just a big picture thought...
When RR and coaches are saying that the team is playing faster this year - picking up things without having to really think about them - but then says that they are making the defensive scheme "more simple" (or something like that) - it does paint a picture.
The offense has clearly started to pick things up and the schemes are becoming more complex. The defense hasn't been able to pick up the pace like the offense has - thus the dumbing down of the schemes.
If our defense is better than last year's version - great. It will have meant that Martin/Roh/RVB all performed to their level, either Ezeh or Mouton steps up considerably, and the defensive backfield wasn't as bad as we thought. But I really think we should start looking forward to 35-31 types of games.
