I’m staying positive

I hope this loss and this feeling stays with all the underclassmen (read: most of the starters). I bet it will, and the team will grow from it greatly. This is still a great program to be a fan of, and the future is bright. Neg away.

You do realize the last time we played this rival on this field, nigh but 700 days ago these players absorbed the most traumatic outcome imaginable?  You'd have thought THAT feeling would fuel their fire 10,000 times more than whatever you think they'll carry with them after this loss.

Sorry but it is the same crap every year. Over 20 years with season tickets but I am done. O-line is bad and never seems to get any better. It is always “waif until next year.” Staee went 3-9 and didn’t fire anybody and out coached Michigan’s highly paid staff. Receivers and running backs continue to underwhelm. No one seems to have any solutions. Good teams find ways to win. Michigan is simply not capable of doing this.

You are a disgrace to Michigan fans. Really 20 years, and same crap every year. I don't recall it that way - in fact in the last 20 years there was even a National Championship. Michigan got the best coach for fit for the program they could ever hope for and you are ready to throw in the towel after 1 game. Because really I don't recall your displeasure 2 weeks ago after Purdue.

We need to hire new people to recruit and coach OL and QB. They've sucked for 3 years. I see no reason to think OL won't still suck in year 4. There's always hope with QB, but it's been a letdown every year.

Three years ago, our head coach left a concussed QB in the game ... and even sent him back in.  T he team was on its way to a 5-7 season.  We hadn't been in the national championship conversation in nearly 10 years.  The team was...

SOFT.

Harbaugh came in, and he was a savior.  He took Hoke's tire fire and turned it into 10-3 and demolished an SEC division champ in a bowl game.  The improvement was DRAMATIC.  You could see how much better coached the players were.

Competence.  It was lovely.

One year after that, we were in the national championship conversation.  We only lost to OSU because of the refs.

This year, we have the least experienced team in the country, and Harbaugh is dealing with Hoke's terrible recruiting late, especially on the O-line.

it's only 1 loss, and one that weather and youthful inexperience cost us.

This team is still 4-1 despite being the least experienced team in division 1.  I'll take it.  Besides, this team will be incredible next year.

Yes, there's room for improvement, but I am thankful every day for Jim Harbaugh.  So should you.

Yes .... 4 and 5 will be the true years of JH's guys and especially "his" QBs and players across the board.  If Don stays .... it will be special in year 4 and 5 I think but this year is NOT lost .... not at all.

We will, have much the same on the OL next year. Problems start there, and ‘18 does not look great right now. Perhaps Fialiaga and Ruiz are all that, but right now, they are not in then group of our “top 5-6” linemen. Not a great sign.

I really appreciate and wholeheartedly agree with your optimism. Us michigan fans can be so pathetic and myopic at times. We're not merryweather fans deep down, but we talk like it after losses.

Everytime we lose a game like this during a season where I think we'll be pretty damn good...it like makes me question everything else I was positive about. Like am I gay? Is that possible? Michigan disappointment has hurt me so much it makes me question my sexuality. It can't be healthy.

The hand wringing is inevitable especially after a tough loss to an inferior club and maybe in some ways it could be an inflection point. Great teams can take a loss and build on it, whether they are ohio , ‘bama, etc. . Great playmakers make great plays and in this game, we came up short. We’ll have to see how this group responds and with IU and PSU coming up, they had better well define themselves.

Gotta be able to get the ball to our playmakers. Grant Perry right now is our best receiver, with Tarik out due to injury. Get him the ball 8-10 times/game. Call the right plays, at the right time, find Perry more often, run a few more screens, don’t give up on the TEs, keep pounding the ball when it’s working and let J’OK run when he needs to.

"it's year 3!" "how come we can't do this or that" "inexcusable" "unacceptable"..

This is the same fanbase that ran RR out of town on the back of the idea that his offense is a gimmick and has no place at Michigan.

You know, RR may not be the best offensive coach out there, maybe others have become better at coaching a scheme he played a major role in developing than he is, but the truth is that RR was run out of town because people had a problem with the kind of offense he ran and they had that problem before his first ever game at Michigan.

If you look around college football and try to find offenses that work frequently and regardless of talent level..they're all 'systems' you consider gimmicky. Let's face it, we - as a fanbase and program - glorify the idea of rock solid defensive football with vanilla offense. Hoke glorified that, Harbaugh glorifies it too. The nostalgia of 10-7  wins, the idea that winning with high-powered 'fancy' offense isn't for real men, that stuff is a key element of Michigan mythology. Harbaugh came in essentially with the promise of being Bo - not just of winning as much as Bo - but to basically be Bo 2.0. Everyone notes how big a role nostalgia for Bo plays in what Harbaugh says about Michigan. Look at some of the changes that were made, the return of the old block M, even the old maize. We got a real Michigan Man in Jim Harbaugh and he lives that stuff because it's a big part of his life story.

But if you want to win with tough D and a vanilla offense, you need good, well-executing players across the field but especially at QB and the O-Line. Inexperience significantly reduces the likelihood of that especially in combination with inclement weather. Our execution is awful, but mythological "Michigan football" is based around execution.

To be blunt, we're getting a high-functioning Kirk Ferentz here with better access to talent. If we have a QB and a line, we can make a run at the playoffs. If not, we're pretty meh.

We are not going to get a better coach than Harbaugh. Who do you want? Meyer, Urban?LOL. Harbaugh leaves and we get Ed Orgeron or the equivalent. It's a game played by 18-22 year old kids. The UofM experience is exceptional. The D is amazing and the O needs tons of work. If you are critical then I suggest you listen to Bo's "the team" speech. It's time to back the team.

time to to go to Dylan, let him get his reps and learn how to lead this team

the playbook looks awfully dummed down now anyway

why can't we have a stud freshman come in and lead like other programs do

The void in the OL in Hokes last 2 years. Next year OL will be better and by 2019 they should be good! I just hope Harbaugh doesn’t leave us for the NFL if he has a 4 or more loss season.

The WR class of Way, Canteen and Harris mostly flamed out, and that would be your group of Sr WRs. These guys were right on the heels of York, Dukes and Jones. That’s consecutive WR classes w/o a WR who regularly has seen the field, let alone a playmaker. Mason Cole and Pat Kugler are the only two serviceable OL out of those two classes too. We’re feeling the pain of 2013/14 recruiting now. We knew we would. Still optimistic for next year...

Perkis-Size Me

3/5 of the starting OL are guys that Harbaugh hand-picked and personally recruited. The lone bright spot on the line is Mason Cole, who was recruited by Hoke. No true freshman are starting.

What makes you so sure that next year’s OL or the one after that will be better? There are young OLs all across the country with far less pure talent that are outperforming Michigan’s OL by leaps and bounds. This is not a Brady Hoke problem. This is a coaching and development problem.

Something I unfortunately was so sure we got rid of when Hoke was fired.

But, okay, I’ll play. I think the issue is just as likely to be that the players and staff, as much or more than the fans, are well aware of the records against rivals. When I look at the last 10-15 years against OSU and MSU, I see terrible records; so do they. For comparison, I look no further than John Copper, who couldn’t beat us; despite being one of the winningest coaches in OSU football history, and having some of the best teams to play for that school. Players on his teams have said that his attitude toward Michigan WAS different; he (and his teams) lost anyway. I think the problem may be as much or more about how Harbaugh & Co. mentally prepare themselves and their teams for these rivalry games than it is about X’s and O’s. In the locker room, the mantra may be “we prepare same way every week.” I doubt that is really true. It can’t be accidental that incredibly successful coaches at the NFL and college levels are getting out-coached in these games. Many people on this board have noted the odd play calling at key moments: two consecutive fade routes in the red zone, when running plays had been effective during the drive; successful running plays that were inexplicably abandoned; and, of course, forcing a pass-heavy scheme in the middle of a monsoon. These are symptoms of a coaching staff thinking too much; and it’s affecting their preparation and execution whether they admit it or not.

We are better than MSU still. Came down to the last play.

People bring up JHs 1-4 record, but all the losses (outside of 2015 OSU), were mostly flukes or screwjobs (2016 OSU)

I'm sorry but we need to rage after a loss like that.  To expect sunshine and rainbows from this fanbase after wandering the desert for so many years is not realistic.

This. We expect more because we have a tradition of success. This product is shit. We pay high ticket prices, donate large sums of money, and invest in this university. I think we can demand that the product be better than what it is. A couple more losses like that and I don’t care what your last name is, you better get this shit fixed.

Your optimism is nice. Glad you have it. I fail to see how these softies are going to benefit from a hope of this shaking them up. That’s never been the way they’ve responded, because when they were punched in the face tonight they recoiled and wimped out. I love that the fans have more intensity than the players. I promise you, put some pads on me and I would have thrown less than three picks.
