How has Mel Tucker been named B1G Coach of the year?

Submitted by lebriarjr on November 30th, 2021 at 1:03 PM

I don’t get this how is Mel named the B1G Coach of year over Harbaugh?

Tucker got help from the refs to beat Uof〽️ and get destroyed by Ohio State and loses to an unranked Purdue team.

Thoughts…

Not remotely surprising. Red Berenson won national championships in '95-'96 and '97-'98, and in neither case was he CCHA coach of the year. He was COY in '94 and '08, neither of which were NCAA championship seasons.

John Beilein took Michigan to the national championship game twice, but was he BIG COY either time? Nope. He was COY just once for the 2013-14 season, when Michigan got to the Elite 8.

Meanwhile, Gene Keady was BIG coach of the year SEVEN times, and never got Purdue to a single Final Four, let alone a championship game.

The COY awards make as much annual sense as the Heismans do.

COY awards actually do make sense in their own convoluted way.

1. The media decides pre-season who they think will be good and who wont

2. The coach of the team that most exceeds what the media thought would happen is almost always COY

Has nothing to do with end results - has everything to do with exceeding media's initial expectations for your team's performance.   Nothing more, nothing less.

Lol take a deep breath it’s going to be ok.

Preseason they were picked to be dead last in the east, and they finished with 10 wins in his second year. It was going to be either him or Harbaugh so.

I don't think you can argue that Tucker didn't do an amazing coaching job this season. If Harbaugh had won it, I don't think you could really argue with that either. NBD except for Jim's bonus.

Who gives a shit?

MSU's football team overachieved and exceeded expectations.

Let's not forget that Brady Hoke won the award in 2011...so it's virtually meaningless.

You see Billy, when a group of voters who love one another very much decide they want a Coach of the Year, they take all of that love...

I have no problem with Tucker winning the COTY.  His team was expected to be a smoldering dumpster fire and instead they won 10 games and finished 3rd in the B1G East.  Hats off to him.

I'd be perfectly happy settling for coach Harbaugh leading MICHIGAN to a B1G championship and a berth in the playoffs. Way more important than any award and it would be pretty sweet if he won some national COY awards instead of having to settle.

2 BIG losses vs 1 BIG loss does make it an odd choice IMO. But, can't deny he put together a pretty great season. I know the stats and the SP rankings etc. tell a different story, but this was a team no one thought would get to more than 5 wins and they blew that out of the water with essentially a team entirely filled with transfer guys. Also, it's only his second year there and the program was in absolute shambles when he got there. His future might not be as bright as his present but hard to argue too much with what he's done this year.

I think Harbaugh is very deserving, but I can't find too much fault with this choice either.

Come on. He won the biggest prize of it all. He took MSU to woodshed and became the highest paid coach in B1G. No other coach was able to beat that. They should give that award to him and his agent. /S. Also, obligatory who cares. Harbaugh was in Superbowl. He doesn't give a shit about personal accolade.

You know how!!!  It’s easy.  We’re Michigan and you know how that goes.  You think that any coach is happy for us and appreciates what we accomplished this year????  Lol, yeah right!

Tucker deserves it.  Jim deserves it too, but they usually give these to the teams that exceeded expectations the most.  O/U was 4.5 wins for MSU before the season, and they got to 10.

I had no idea it was called the Hayes–Schembechler Coach of the Year Award. That's the one the coaches vote on. The media award is called the  Dave McClain Coach of the Year, Things you learn some days. Mel won both this year

By doing a great job lifting MSU from the ashes of their couches? We'll see how he does long-term, or whether he can possibly be worth the stupid money they are throwing at him--odds would seem to be against him in a conference where Michigan is again on the rise, OSU has dominated for a decade, and Penn State will always claim its share of the attention. But he rebuilt that team quickly, and deserves congratulations, at least if we're not burying our heads in the sand completely.

Good for Mel, he did a hell of a job. The only reason to care about this is there's 50k less of Harbaugh's bonus money going towards UM employees impacted by COVID salary cuts.

I don't care about this award - I care about playing for the B1G championship next Saturday.

Better yet, maybe our coaches have learned from being outcoached by Tucker, and will do better next year (McDonald needs to spend all week and all offseason learning how to handle tempo) while still surviving that blot on an otherwise amazing season, I'll take that over the awards.

He's in year #2 and year #1 he inherited a very bare cupboard and year 1 was COVID year.

Harbaugh is in year #7 - in 2017 Dantonio went 10-3 after a 3-9 season in 2016 and he wasn't coach of the year and it was because at that point in his tenure he simply did what was expected of him.

Why would you care?  He is deserving.  He raided the portal and got lucky - yes.  But you still have to coach the kids up which he did a great job.  We are in the B10 championship.  I’m sure he would take that one instead.

Harbaugh playing for a B1G trophy this weekend.

Mel has the Paul Bunyan trophy

Harbaugh hopefully wins National coach of the year.

Mel can have B1G coach of the year.

OP, this is the Big Ten and Coach Of The Year has almost always been a consolation prize given to a coach whose team had a good, perhaps even great for them, but not necessarily division or conference winning season. That, and I think that, as far as the current management of the conference is concerned, Harbaugh may be the odd man out of many things in their estimation regardless of how well Michigan does, and I am fine with that.

How has Mel Tucker been named B1G Coach of the Year?

You go and open the ballot when it comes to you, and then you check the box next to the coach you think deserves it, and then you go down and submit it.

And that’s considered a vote.

So he got more of those than Harbaugh did

I mean, Tucker did a really good job taking MSU from crap to 10 wins.  There's absolutely no shame in that, even if I don't think it's going to be easy for him to sustain it.  But as COY he absolutely deserves recognition and other than Harbaugh there isn't a guy in the conference who really wowed me.

Do I think he's a COY who deserves 10 years and $95M?  Of course not.  But let him have his trophy.
