Hockey update

Submitted by Monk on March 8th, 2020 at 10:34 PM

Ok so the hockey games today are done, and Minnesota beat ND, but Bemidji State won, Michigan is 14th in the pwr, surrounded by:

11 Mass.-Lowell

12 Bemidji State

13 Arizona State

14 Michigan

15 Western Michigan

16 Maine

17 Quinnipiac

18 Minnesota

If Michigan wins, they should be in, if they lose, root for the teams on the bubble (outside of ASU who's idle) to lose.

I think it may come down to if 15 is good enough to get in. Hopefully we just win the big ten and be down with it. It’s been really fun watching the team surge the last 6 weeks or whatever it is.

Can barely believe we actually played ourselves into this spot. I thought we had no chance at an at-large around the turn of the new year. Getting swept by ND is hurting a lot now

14 miiiight be good enough but it sure isn't safe. AHA is definitely taking the 16 and then just two more bid stealers and you're out. Are we likely to stay at 14 even with a loss? Or could we slip to 15? I still barely understand the pairwise after all these years

That’s asking quite a bit.

Maine plays UConn (33rd)

Quinnipiac plays Yale (39th)

WMU plays St Cloud State (24th)

Mass plays Boston U (29th)

The odds of two of those upsets occurring is slim. Not to mention you’re still holding out hope nobody else outside the top 15 wins their conference.

While theoretically in play, the season is all but over if we lose.

It's kind of tough to figure out upsets in other tourneys until the quarterfinals are over, but at this point, the ECAC will probably have two semifinalists not in the top15, the winner of RPI-Harvard and Quinnapiac-Yale and same with WCHA, with Tech and BGSU already in the semis.  If upsets happen in those two conferences, then the line moves to 13.  I have a good friend who graduated from Cornell who already is already talking about the greatness of his team, and honestly from what I can tell, they really weren't tested in conference, so they should win, but anything can happen in the one game elimination.

Definitely on the bubble.  We would have been #11 if we had knocked off FYS at home back in November.

I think we need to win on Sunday or the season is over.

It would be great if we could actually watch the game, but BTN and BTN Alternate will probably have a replay of a JV volleyball match between Nebraska and Northwestern on instead.

The game against Ohio State will actually be played on Sunday at 5:30 pm, because Ohio State doesn't have a home hockey rink--they only have a basketball/wrestling arena where they sometimes allow ice to be installed.

The game will be on semi-neutral ice--Nationwide Arena, home of the Blue Jackets.  I don't think it will be on BTN, because at 7:00 Sunday they have a "Selection Sunday Special" scheduled to air.

Somehow the state wrestling championships get priority at Value City and the high school hockey championships get priority at Nationwide for the weekend. I get that they were both previously scheduled but it's still irksome. It's pretty well known that OSU is against having the B1G semis be a best of 3 series for this very reason - they can't hold the available arenas. Doing it in the NHL arena at 5:30 on a Sunday makes the semifinal of a major college hockey conference tournament seem like an afterthought which is trash. I wish the B1G would make a rule like college baseball or softball: if you can't host, your opponent gets to no matter what the seeding is.

On the other hand, Michigan's best hope for making the tournament relies on the fact that this is only one game to advance. Winning 2 vs OSU is obviously much less likely. Does anyone know if this counts as a neutral or road game for RPI/PWR? Not that it will matter much, win and we're in, lose and the season is done.

If BTN at least allows me to stream the game on the Fox sports app without putting it behind the BTN+ paywall, and has halfway decent production quality, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Admittedly, I am not a huge college hockey fan (and fairly ignorant in general), but I thought for sure the OP was joking when Bemidji State was mentioned.  But nope, it is a real college. Certainly doesn't sound like a real one, but I can confirm it has a website and everything.
