I love our receivers, but that Ninja is spectacular.  He was better than Olave and even Wilson last year imo.

Their receivers, specifically Jaxon Smith made some ridiculous catches against us just to keep the game even respectable. Could have won by 4 scores if not for some crazy 3rd and 4th down conversions

I have to wonder if these speculated values are just proof of the old saying, "Something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay."

And the booster/donors at those players' schools are always willing to pay top dollar.

In the end, it's probably a product of both: good players and rich boosters.

You're worth whatever the market says you're worth. Example of that is Kyler Murray. If the Cardinals think he is worth $230 million, then he's worth $230 million because that is what they are willing to pay to retain his services.

Completely separate question from whether or not you think someone deserves the money they're being paid, which can always be debated. But that is what they are worth because someone is willing to pay it to them. They are worth that amount to someone.

Yeah, but how much, and for how long? Six years ago Rashan Gary was the unanimous #1 recruit in the country, and the rumors are that Clemson offered him $200k-$300k. This year the Miami QB commit was rumored to sign a $9.5M deal, and the Tenn QB commit an $8M deal. Even for rich people, that's a lot of money. There aren't many that can throw that kind of money around year after year, for unproven high schoolers no less. It feels like a bubble to me.

LOL, what the hell are you driving and how big is your tank?

Gas, while still more costly than any of us like, has dropped almost a buck and a half here from a high several weeks ago of over $5.30/gal nearly everywhere all the way down to as low as $3.70 now (although most area stations are closer to $4) in my area of Michigan.  On a drive south a couple weeks ago I found it as low as $3.39 in parts of Tennessee and Georgia.

And....not every team with a high dollar payroll (NIL my ass) is going to win...not even their conference let alone a national title.

So, when one of these teams drops a game that they are 'not supposed to' or even drops 2 to a couple of good teams that leaves them out of the race what will these boosters think...'we should spend more'? Maybe...but they may be more likely to think..'we need a different coordinator or head coach?' or 'you didn't play my guy enough'. etc.

Its going to be a mess....transfer portal get ready.

I don't think most advertisers expect to make their money back on these investments. They might be okay with "losing" the money as long as their favorite team wins.

Besides all the talk that recruits have uncertainties about Jim Harbaugh staying around, I wonder if this is also a reason recruiting is in bad shape for 2023, as I don't know if Michigan NIL-ers are willing to do the same.

I think I read that NIL valuations were what players could *command* based on the current market. Essentially a value, not an actual commitment of resources to that player.

I feel like Stroud must be worth more, like maybe $2.7M? Seems to be a number he's comfortable with. Then again, I'd say that JJ is probably worth something closer to $4.2M.

Either way, he aint hangin' 100 on shit.

I’m just thinking of the tax implications of NIL.

Can the Collectives be 501 c(3) organizations?   If a Collective arranges an NIL deal - let’s say a car dealership - are the NIL fees paid to the player by the dealership considered SG&A?

If the dealership sponsors a fundraiser for a charity, is the NIL payment to the player considered a charitable (tax deductible) contribution?

I don’t think there’s any standard definition, which is part of the problem, and the state laws determining what is, and isn’t, allowed - will be extremely varied across the country.

I would imagine State Legislatures in the SEC footprint, and Ohio, would provide immense flexibility - including the taxable aspect of NIL - to field the most competitive team possible.  And, that’s going to result in a very “unlevel” playing field.

Again? Really? No, no, no, no.

a) there is no variability in the 501(c)(3) regs or rulings.

b) there is no convoluted path - regardless of how many ways you try to route the funds - to getting a *charitable tax credit* for paying a player for using his NIL.  It's a simple marketing expense, a single line on the company P&L. If you don't know the difference between a tax credit versus an expense deduction, you need to figure it out.

Stop, just stop.

Sorry I snapped at you. And. You're welcome.

I am a grumpy, old businessman who is tired of being unable to get Everyone's Attention just one time to 'splain the in and outs of Name, Image, and Likeness deals.

- end of rant.

(I owe you a beer or beverage of your choice. Again, my apologies).

Beta, no worries - and, though your offer of beer is both kind and thoughtful, perhaps we can just catch up, and meet in person, at a tailgate this fall.  We’ll be hosting at Homecoming- for sure, and are trying to figure out what other dates - with our kids.  (Our two children are students in Ann Arbor, which makes home Game weekends even more fun.)

Out of curiosity, do you have any perspectives on state / federal legislation that can try to get NIL under control?  I’d welcome hearing your perspective.

My view is - I cannot imagine legislation that would limit the amount anyone could earn.  Some tax associated legislation could be drafted / passed - but, if a business is willing to pay someone “$X” for their endorsement, that’s up to the business.

As I ponder this, the only exception MIGHT be if the NIL deal was established with a “minor”, a student athlete is 17 years of age (or younger) when the contract is signed.

Again, thanks for sharing your perspective.
