I don't think this was an MGoBlog invention. It's just one of those things that's out there.

I also believe that it has a North-South divide. SEC and ACC folk think the Rose Bowl is the most overrated thing in the history of the world.

It's not just Mgoblog and not just Herbstreit. This has been a common statement in the wake of the Rose Bowl (and has been said before). Seen it in a lot of places on CFP twitter.

Klatt said the exact same thing when he was on with Colin Cowherd on Monday.  Start the playoffs right after the regular season and end up with the championship game, New Years Day, at the Rose Bowl.

A nice way to hold onto a last bit of tradition yet evolve into the new era of football...

In addition, the transfer portal would not be open until AFTER the Rose bowl and then HS signing would be AFTER the transfer portal.  Pretty much like how the NFL does it.  Play the game... have Free Agency signing (transfer portal)...then have the draft (HS signing).  Yet the NCAA is so FUBAR they can never seem to figure that out.  Too busy investigating cheeseburgers sales to handle such simple stuff...

Disagree.  Let's not forget that these are college students.  In most places, the second semester has either already started by the time of the CFP championship or is about to (Michigan's starts two days after).  Your suggestion would make it difficult to transfer mid-calendar - maybe some schools would still let a guy in after the term start, but I doubt we would.

The portal should open as soon as the regular season ends.

Keep in mind, the Rose Bowl is Jan 1st.  I do not know too many schools that start their 2nd semester before Jan 1st.  Would it make for a hectic 1-2 weeks?  Sure but it would not conflict with a 2nd semester.

Plus I am pretty sure that most schools would allow for a little leeway as most 1st week of classes do very little.  Every school drop and add go for 1-2 weeks post start 2nd semester.  So yay there is time between post Rose Bowl for the transfer portal...

While some believe that SC or UCLA would have an advantage over teams from east of the Rockies, I don't.  Alabama has a pretty good Rose Bowl record, although they haven't won since the 1946 game. I know, I know.

This isn't that farfetched.  College baseball always plays its championship in Omaha, and softball in Oklahoma City.

It would be a slight retreat from the increasing NFLization of the college game.

There's a difference between:

  • a Rose Bowl at 2 PM local on New Year's Day, kicking off in the California sun, a few hours after the famous parade, and
  • a Rose Bowl at 5 PM local on the 3rd or 4th Monday evening of January (which is when the Championship game will be in the 12-team era), possibly depending on the calendar taking place on a workday (which means the usual LA traffic), kicking off when the sunset is already under way.

Much of the Rose Bowl's charm is centered around the NYD kick.  I get the idea of a permanent title game site from a romantic POV, but I don't think it's a good idea at all from a practical POV.

IMO, it should simply be an annual QF game, always played mid-day on the 1st (or 2nd).

Everything works around the NFL schedule, for better or worse.

The schedule in upcoming years, it's going to be interesting how it goes.  The 4 1st-round games will be on a Saturday (1 on Friday night) in mid-December.  That will work.  The 4 QF will be on NYD (1 on NYE).  That will work too.

But the 2 SF will be split between a Thursday and Friday evening.  And the Final will be on a Monday evening.  All to avoid the NFL.  Those are second-tier times, for sure.

Yeah, it's certainly iconic, but I'm also not thrilled with the concept of locking in the title game on the other side of the country. I feel like nostalgia for the tradition of the game seems to cloud to many fans the fact that it puts teams like M and PSU at a huge logistical disadvantage, all the more so if it's a year like this year (M vs UW)/the traditional Rose Bowls where the opponent gets a relative home game.

Honestly, I feel like the perfect system is what the NFL does, home sites for the higher seeds and then a championship game that rotates throughout the country (South, West AND Midwest like Detroit and Indy) so that one region isn't getting permanently hosed...

I think you make some very good points. Part of what makes the Rose Bowl great is that the game starts in the daylight so the surrounding scenery can be enjoyed on site and on TV.  So for it to be the site of the National Championship game and maintain the charm it would need to start early enough and either be on January 1st or find a way to play it on a non NFL playoff Saturday.  Not sure that is feasible.  Also, with SoFi nearby I think it would be a challenge for the Rose Bowl to compete as the Championship venue when it sadly ends up being more of corporate decision as it seems the decision makers like the new shiny venues.  Too bad as the Rose Bowl is college football.  I do think it will be an eternal playoff site but will be shocked if it becomes the Championship site even though that would be very cool if it could work out.

I'm very much in agreement with the spirit of the idea. That setting at that hour on New Year's Day is special, and it should always have a central place in the CFB post-season. I went for the first time this year and I felt that the scenery and the atmosphere inside the bowl were as beautiful and electric as I had always expected they would be from watching on TV. The comments on the round-table that this was a Michigan fan family reunion were on point. That's how I felt inside the stadium, throughout the game. I kept thinking about Keith Jackson and how he might be narrating the experience from the booth.

However, the facility itself needs some massive upgrades. I don't say that as if upgrades would be a good thing that any fan should want. The facility needs to be improved. The crowding on the concourse before the game was absurd, borderline dangerous. It took 50 minutes for my friend and I to get from the concourse outside section 15 into our seats. At least a half hour of that time was spent in a crowd jammed together as tight as can be, bottlenecked outside the tunnel. The ushers at the tunnel would stop the flow for ten minutes at a time so that the crowd would not become stuck in the tunnel. This made sense, except for that the same jam they were fearing inside the tunnel merely happened right outside of it. In theory, the line could have extended backwards further, but there was no space on the concourse for this to happen. People were just stuck. It was nightmarish.

So, this is a special, special venue with old-fashioned quirks that should absolutely be preserved (the limited piped-in music, as Brian has mentioned, was a godsend) but massive upgrades need to be made, really for the sake of safety. The tunnels and aisles and the concourse itself need to be widened, the steps need to be made less arduous, and while they're at it, they might as well expand the bathroom offerings. A+ scenery and vibes from inside the bowl; D- logistical situation.

Yeahhhh, well worth it, but it definitely could use some upgrading like Michigan Stadium in 2010.

We ended up getting to our seats just before kickoff so it wasnt horrible to get inside, but I'm amazed every time I go to a different stadium how long it takes to actually get inside compared to Michigan Stadium which is literally bigger than any other...Ford Field was horrible when I went last year. Spartan Stadium wasnt great either.

In order for this to happen the final would have to be played on New Years Day, something I'm not opposed to.  Or as close to it as possible - this century the Rose has been played on the 2nd (3x), and the 3rd & 4th (1x each).

I think part of the allure of the Rose is the entire festivities all day starting with Tournament of Roses parade.  I doubt Pasadena or the organizers would want all of that pushed to a week after Jan 1.

I wouldn't be able to see Herbstreit's Twitter anyway. For various reasons, he blocked me long ago. You would think he would have forgiven me by now, as it has been several years.

"That being said, there could certainly be some problems with a solo venue for the National Championship each year like Herbstreit is proposing.

Imagine a year when a team like UCLA or USC ends up in the National Championship against a team like Alabama or Georgia. This scenario would create a pretty drastic competitive advantage for the local California team compared to a team that would have to travel across the country for the game."

Yeah, just imagine such a year where UCLA or USC gets to play a home game at the Rose Bowl against a team which traveled 3/4 of the way across the country...after winning the most Big Ten titles in conference history.

Just imagine that "...PRETTY DRASTIC COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE..."

Inconceivable!

Herbstreets career should have ended after the Les Miles rumors he used to benefit Ohio State in the National Championship matchup.

He's not wrong about the Rose Bowl.  But the people in charge just care about TV $'s.

100% co-sign this, and I don't know that many that would disagree (other than some of the logistical issues of actually going to the game, which aren't really that bad having experienced it for myself).  Huge stadium, beautiful setting, and a true College Football Fan Mecca.  Let's do it.  I'm out on going to some random city every year, especially since they're all likely to be in the south anyway.

The guy who just got inducted in the Rose Bowl HOF and has a “Kirk Herbstreit Family” endowed luxury box in the stadium. That guy supports MGoBlog’s idea the game should be held in that stadium?

I *really* think UM can be influenced to make the Big House more like the Rose Bowl. Not completely, but more similar. Make our game experience different than the rest of college football.

Less piped in music. More school band during game. Old school

I believe in SANTA!
