Hawai'i Rainbow Warrior Football Jet Lag & Frequent Flyer Miles: Honolulu to Sydney to Detroit.

Submitted by markusr2007 on

With all of the off-season excitement and now new Michigan uniforms, I finally started to look more closely at the Michigan's first opponent, Hawai'i, who will come to play the Wolverines on Saturday, September 3 in Ann Arbor.

I'm sure over the next couple of weeks game previews will thoroughly explain why the Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors are just "gonna die" in that game given Michigan's superior team talent, strength, experience level, depth and coaching, etc. and Hawai'i's new team, sadistic new coach Nick Rolovich, etc.

I think the pathology report will read differently: death from jet lag and an overload of frequent flyer miles.

Hawai'i 2016 football schedule.

The week before on Thursday, August 25 the Hawai'i football team boards a flight of 5,000 miles to Sydney, Australia to play Cal in front of 83,500 at ANZ Stadium, one of the most beautiful sports venues in the world.  Kickoff is Friday afternoon, 26 August local time:

Then its back to Honolulu (5000 miles), and then Honolulu to Detroit (4500 miles) to play Michigan in Ann Arbor September 3.

Then back to Honolulu (4500 miles) to play Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks in their first home game.

Coach Nick Rolovich:

“I can’t wait for something bad to happen for this team,” Rolovich said in Las Vegas at the Mountain West Conference’s Media Days. “How we respond to that will tell us how much progress we’ve made in the offseason.

“Do we start complaining or do we stick together and say, hey, we’re going to get through this.”

I think they will have to be awake first.

Hats off to Hawai'i football though. They have balls. Love that state. Love their school and program. Love their retro football uniforms:

May they finish 11-1 this fall.

OMG I hated the flight from Minneapolis to Honolulu.  One of the most grueling experiences of my life.

The way back wasn't too bad though.  Connected in SF on the red eye which broke it up a little better.

Delta used to fly from ATL to Dubai (something like 16 hrs) and I've also flown ATL and DTW to Japan. Clear out all your emails, do lots of work, watch 3 movies and you still had time on your hands. Thankfully I was in business class - those poor souls in coach had it far worse. Can't imagine playing a football game after that.

I wonder if the kids get to earn/keep the FF miles? Probably an impermissible benefit per the NCAA. Maybe they have to sign them directly over the M. Emerett?

My guess is they are flying charter... And my other guess if, for some reason they are not flying a charter, they have some special arrangement discounted with the airlines, and there will be no frequent flyer miles.. So, either way.. My guess is they don't get them.

If you like their uniforms, you will love the Haka war chant.

Whenever someone complains about travel time to more remote members of the B1G, just think about your travel schedule if you are a varsity water polo player for the Rainbow Waihine.  BTW, Michigan and Hawaii probably have the two strongest women's water polo programs outside of California.  And of course, Oahu is a fabulous return destination.

My oldest son is stationed at Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii and is a huge Michigan fan (didn't have much choice growing up in this household). He is dating a native Hawaiin girl who is also in the Army. We are sending them 2 Michigan shirts to wear the day of the game, which I think she'll go along with because, as she puts it "U.H. sucks" at football.

No sympathy at all. Time to start our season with a big blowout, so we can

play some people early, and see what we have in terms of depth.
